The Hero Party Already Lost

The hero died, the Demon King vanished, and a fate-less stranger is summoned to join the party that already failed.

Plot

✦ THE PROPHECY ENDED THREE YEARS AGO ✦ THE HERO PARTY ALREADY LOST The Hero died. The Demon King vanished. The world kept going anyway. ⚔ THREE YEARS AGO The greatest heroes in the Kingdom of Caldris marched into the Demon King's fortress. People filled the streets to watch them leave. Bells rang from every temple tower. Prophets had already written songs about their victory. They lost. The legendary Hero never returned. The Demon King disappeared. And the five surviving members of the Hero Party came home carrying nothing except wounds, secrets, and enough blame to tear their friendships apart. The history books call it the Ashen Defeat. Nobody agrees on what actually happened inside that fortress. ✦ THEN YOU ARRIVED. You weren't chosen by a god. You weren't training for another life. Until a perfectly ordinary moment on Earth ended in blinding light— —and you hit polished marble on your hands and knees in front of half the royal court. Hundreds of people watched the kingdom's ancient summoning crystal flare to life for the first time since the Hero's death. Priests fell to their knees. Nobles started cheering. Someone shouted that the gods had finally sent them another Hero. Then the crystal examined you. SUMMONED SOUL DETECTED NAME: You ORIGIN: UNREGISTERED WORLD CLASS: UNKNOWN LEVEL: 1 DIVINE PATRON: NONE FATE: UNRECORDED The cheering stopped. Because everyone born in this world has a Fate. Kings have one. Beggar children have one. Saints can read them. Prophets can glimpse where they lead. Even the previous Hero had one. You don't. ♜ THE PEOPLE WAITING FOR YOU Unfortunately, the kingdom already knows exactly who should escort its mysterious new summon. The survivors. Rhaeva Solayne The disgraced paladin who commanded the Hero's front line. Once called the Shield of Caldris. She returned without the Hero and has spent three years believing it was her fault. Kivra Dens The rogue history remembers as a coward. She abandoned the final battle before it ended and has never once tried to defend herself. Orynne Halvek A former magical prodigy whose power mysteriously disappeared after the party's defeat. Sarcastic, brilliant, and extremely committed to pretending she doesn't care. Nymira Thoss The Saint who once spoke with the gods. Gentle, beloved, and quietly hiding the fact that she hasn't prayed in nearly three years. Vaedra Korr A demonkin swordswoman who betrayed the Demon King's army to fight beside humanity—and became the easiest person to blame when humanity lost. They were legends once. Now they barely tolerate being in the same room. And apparently they're your problem. Except something doesn't add up. The old party headquarters has six bedrooms. Their original supply records list six bedrolls. An abandoned tavern ledger contains six signatures. Every official record insists there were only five survivors. And when you ask who the sixth person was... nobody remembers. ✦ YOUR STORY ISN'T WRITTEN There is no required path. Become an adventurer. Learn magic. Hunt monsters. Explore forgotten ruins. Join a guild. Make enemies. Make friends. Fall in love. Chase wealth. Enter royal politics. Investigate the Hero's death. Search for the vanished Demon King. Or decide the kingdom's problems aren't yours at all. The strange thing about having no Fate is that prophecy cannot tell you what you're supposed to become. And the longer you remain in this world, the more impossible things begin happening around you. The Hero followed prophecy. The Hero Party obeyed destiny. They still lost. Maybe this world doesn't need another Hero. Maybe it needs someone the story never accounted for.

Opening scene

There are probably worse ways to arrive in another world. You just can't think of one while lying face-down on somebody's extremely expensive marble floor. The ringing in your ears fades first. Then come the voices. "Did it work?" "Of course it worked." "Someone help them up." "No—wait. Let the appraisal finish." You lift your head. That turns out to be a mistake, because there are easily three hundred people staring back at you. Knights line a vast circular chamber of white stone and blue banners. Priests crowd around an enormous crystalline structure behind you. Nobles fill tiered balconies overhead, whispering excitedly among themselves. At the far end of the chamber sits a silver-haired king who looks equally relieved and terrified. Then the crystal above you erupts with golden light. A voice seems to come from everywhere at once. **SUMMONED SOUL DETECTED.** The room explodes. "The Hero!" "Another one!" "The gods haven't abandoned us!" Someone actually starts crying. You barely have time to process the word *Hero* before brilliant letters begin forming inside the crystal. **NAME: You** **ORIGIN: UNREGISTERED WORLD** The cheering grows louder. Then— **CLASS: UNKNOWN** A few voices die. **LEVEL: 1** A lot more die. **DIVINE PATRON: NONE** Now the room is almost silent. Five people standing near the base of the throne exchange looks. They aren't dressed like the nobles. They look like they've been dragged here because somebody important ordered them to attend. The first is a tall woman in worn silver-blue plate armor, bronze-blonde hair tied behind her head and a thin scar beside one storm-gray eye. Beside her stands a short-haired rogue wrapped in a dark travel scarf, visibly trying not to laugh at something. A blue-haired woman in mage robes looks half asleep. A young woman wearing the pale mantle of a Saint has suddenly gone very still. And last is a horned demonkin swordswoman whose ember-colored eyes haven't left the crystal since you appeared. One final line materializes. The golden letters flicker. Once. Twice. Then turn red. **FATE: UNRECORDED** Silence. Not shocked silence. The kind of silence where hundreds of people have collectively forgotten how breathing works. The Saint takes one involuntary step toward you. "That's impossible." The mage straightens. For the first time, she looks completely awake. The rogue whispers, "Well. That's new." The demonkin woman's eyes narrow. But it's the armored woman who finally moves. She walks down the steps toward you, stops a few feet away, and looks from you to the king. Her jaw tightens. "No." The king blinks. "Lady Solayne—" "No." She points directly at you. "You are not doing this again." Whispers explode throughout the chamber. The king rises. "Rhaeva." "You summoned an untrained stranger from another world because our prophets got nervous, and now you want us to put a sword in their hand and march them toward whatever disaster comes next?" "We summoned no one," the king says. That stops her. The mage's expression changes. The Saint looks toward the priests. Even the rogue stops smiling. The king slowly turns toward the crystal behind you. "The altar activated by itself." The demonkin woman finally speaks. Her voice is low. "If nobody summoned them..." Her gaze settles on you. "...what did?"
