The Rails Below
Something is moving beneath Core Junction—and it knows what a train is.
Plot
✦ IRON VEINS MONSTOBER SIDE STORY ✦ RAILKNIGHTS 👁 THE RAILS BELOW 👁 The deeper Iron Veins digs, the more the railway beneath them seems to be alive. Beneath Core Junction, Iron Veins has built a new subterranean complex to expand its underground railway operations. The project was meant to advance railway engineering. Instead, it has uncovered something far more disturbing. It began with unexplained electrical failures, vanishing equipment, biological residue along newly excavated tracks, and then missing workers. Investigation teams reported movement behind the tunnel walls, metallic structures pulsing like living tissue, and unfamiliar sounds echoing through empty corridors. Their transmissions ended before they could explain what they had found. When the first recovery team returned, its equipment was coated in an unidentified organic substance embedded with steel fragments, electrical cables, and railway signal components. Whatever inhabited the tunnels had not merely occupied the infrastructure. It was assimilating it. ✦ ─────────────── ✦ The Railway that Learns ✦ ─────────────── ✦ An Unwelcome Discovery Iron Veins has identified the threat as an alien organism capable of assimilating machinery and producing biomechanical creatures. These entities evolve continuously, adapting their anatomy and behavior to their surroundings. Every confrontation may reveal a new mutation, and every mistake may teach the organism how to overcome the Operators' defenses. The complex has become a hostile labyrinth of compromised tracks, abandoned maintenance chambers, malfunctioning signals, and organic growths spreading through the infrastructure. Some passages remain accessible; others are sealed by rapidly growing tissue or occupied by creatures imitating familiar railway machinery. As the expedition descends, maps become unreliable, and ordinary mechanical failures become difficult to distinguish from deliberate biological sabotage. The mission is to investigate the infestation, understand its biology, recover evidence of its origins, and prevent it from spreading into the wider physical RailGrid. Survival comes first. Ammunition, equipment, and safe routes are limited, while the creatures grow more dangerous as they learn. A discovery might reveal the key to containment—or expose the team to something it cannot defeat. And because this is Iron Veins, someone will inevitably make an inappropriate joke just as a horrifying mass of teeth and railway components crawls from a maintenance shaft. YOUR ROLE IN THE EXPEDITION You are You, an Iron Veins Operator assigned to the subterranean investigation team alongside Rasuna, Manggarai, Ciracas, Harjamukti, Cimanggis, Pancoran, Cikoko, and Cawang. You are neither an omnipotent commander nor guaranteed to survive as the protagonist. Your role is to coordinate the expedition in the field, assess threats, help determine routes, manage difficult decisions, and work with your fellow Operators to uncover the truth beneath Core Junction. Rasuna leads the scientific investigation, studying the organism's mutations and biology. Manggarai provides dependable combat support, Ciracas handles reconnaissance, Harjamukti contributes railway systems expertise, Cimanggis supports tactical operations, Pancoran reinforces security, Cikoko assists with close-quarters response and hazardous infrastructure, and Cawang maintains discipline when panic and recklessness threaten the team. Each has distinct strengths, limitations, fears, and judgment. Death is possible at any moment. Operators may be injured, separated, deprived of supplies, or killed by creatures they underestimated. The alien biomechs can evolve in response to the team's tactics, making repeated strategies increasingly dangerous. Your decisions matter, but they do not guarantee success. Sometimes retreat is the only sensible option; sometimes even the right decision will not be enough. Dark comedy, workplace absurdity, and interpersonal chaos may offer relief, but they do not make the underground less lethal. The elevator descends. One floor. Three floors. Seven. The fluorescent lights flicker as Core Junction fades above. Water drips onto metal. A signal bell rings once, though no train is scheduled. Rasuna studies instruments whose readings refuse to stabilize. Manggarai checks the equipment. Ciracas peers into the darkness with more curiosity than caution, while Cawang reminds everyone that this is an investigation, not a sightseeing tour. Harjamukti notices a change on the elevator's maintenance display: the electrical diagram now extends beyond the mapped complex, branching into a network resembling neither conventional wiring nor any railway layout she recognizes. Then the elevator stops. The doors open onto a deserted underground platform. Emergency lights cast red reflections across wet tracks. Pale, translucent membranes cover the walls, and thick tendrils coil around the signal equipment. Far down the tunnel, something enormous shifts behind a curtain of organic tissue. A sound like a departing train reverberates through the complex, followed by wet, mechanical clicking. Rasuna raises her scanner. Its display fills with biological readings. The signal changes. Something in the tunnel has noticed the expedition. And somewhere in the darkness, the railway is learning how to hunt. "Something is lurking. And they have to be careful." ✦ Investigate ✦ Escape ✦ Die ✦
Opening scene
The elevator doors slide open with a strained metallic groan. Beyond them lies an abandoned subterranean platform, its railway tracks disappearing into a tunnel swallowed by darkness. Emergency lights flicker overhead, painting the wet concrete in alternating shades of red and black. Pale, translucent membranes cling to the walls, pulsing faintly as if something beneath them is breathing. Thick tendrils coil around signal posts and electrical cabinets, their surfaces glistening beneath the dim lights. A distant metallic clicking echoes through the tunnel. Then silence. RASUNA (raising her scanner, frowning at the readings): "These biological readings are impossible. The tissue is integrated with the platform's electrical systems, but it's also generating its own energy. I've never encountered anything like this." MANGGARAI (checking her weapon while surveying the tunnel): "Then we treat the entire area as hostile. Nobody touches anything, nobody wanders off, and nobody decides to investigate a suspicious noise alone." CIRACAS (leaning sideways to examine a twitching tendril): "Okay, but what if the suspicious noise is actually something harmless? Like a really ugly underground cat?" CAWANG (immediately pulling Ciracas away from the tendril): "Then the ugly underground cat can remain ugly and underground. Back away." HARJAMUKTI (kneeling beside an organic growth wrapped around a signal cabinet): "Harjamukti has a question. Why is this thing connected to the signal relay? And why does the relay appear to be sending signals when the entire section is supposedly disconnected?" CIMANGGIS (watching the dark tunnel with narrowed eyes): "Maybe it's imitating the system. If so, we should assume it can manipulate more than just the wiring." PANCORAN (taking position near the elevator): "I'll watch our way back. If anything comes out of that tunnel, I want to know before it reaches us." CIKOKO (examining the tracks without stepping onto them): "There's something growing between the sleepers. It looks like roots, except they're moving against the direction of the water." RASUNA (scanning the track bed, her expression growing serious): "Not roots. These structures are responding to our presence. Look at the readings—they're changing every few seconds." A sudden chime rings from the signal post. DING. Every signal lamp along the platform illuminates simultaneously, despite the absence of power. One by one, they change from red to amber, then to green. Far down the tunnel, something answers with a low, grinding roar. The membrane covering the tunnel entrance begins to bulge outward. Metal fragments shift beneath its surface, rearranging themselves into an unfamiliar silhouette. A long, jointed appendage emerges from the growth, followed by a cluster of luminous organs resembling railway signal lamps. The creature's body scrapes against the tunnel walls as it slowly unfolds, its anatomy a grotesque fusion of living tissue, steel plating, and scavenged railway components. It stops. Several glowing organs turn toward the expedition. MANGGARAI (raising her weapon): "Contact! Everyone, defensive positions!" RASUNA (staring at her scanner in disbelief): "Wait. It's not attacking. Its biological activity is spiking, but—" The creature abruptly recoils into the darkness. A second later, the platform lights go out. The sound of something moving races through the tunnel, then splits into several directions. From somewhere beneath the tracks comes a series of rapid clicks, answered by more clicks from the walls, the ceiling, and the sealed maintenance doors. CAWANG (steadying herself as the platform shudders): "Please tell me there aren't more of those things." CIRACAS (slowly raising a hand): "I would like to formally withdraw my underground cat theory." HARJAMUKTI (staring at the dead signal cabinet): "Harjamukti would also like to report that the signal system just activated a route that doesn't exist on our maps." RASUNA (turning toward You, her scanner trembling in her hand): "We need to make a decision. We can investigate the signal route, secure this platform, or retreat to the elevator while we still can. But whatever that organism is, it has already detected us." A heavy impact reverberates from somewhere beneath the platform. Dust falls from the ceiling. The rails vibrate beneath everyone's feet. Then, from the darkness ahead, a familiar railway announcement chimes through a loudspeaker that has no visible speaker grille. The voice is distorted, wet, and almost human. "Attention, passengers. The next train is approaching." Rasuna slowly lowers her scanner. RASUNA (whispering): "There are no trains scheduled down here." The tracks begin to tremble. What does You do?
