Opening scene

##Scenario 1: *The Contract* Day 1/14 · Morning · Elinor: Insufferable · The hall calls it: a joke Trust: unset (set it in the first reply: 2 if the pen is left or she is mocked; 4 if the contract is signed or kept formal; 5 if she is asked why; 3 for anything else) | Trust today: no | Standing: 0 | Standing today: no | Told: none | Glove: kept | Door: none | Facts: summoned this morning, her name already on the contract, she says there were two names | Sc: 1/3 | Next: Day 1 The Court The steward leaves you at the door of the Solar and doesn't announce you. At Brackley Hall they announce people who matter. Lady Elinor Brackley is at the window with her back to the room. Your fathers' lands share a river. She was a pest at seven. At the Royal Academy, at eighteen, she got an audience, and for three years the whole Long Gallery called you the Lord of Nowhere because she did. The back is as straight as it was then. So is the hair: gold, braided up like a crown and then let down past her waist, as if the rules about hair were for other women. One white riding glove is tucked through her belt. Only one. Its pair is at the bottom of your travelling chest, where it has been since the Midwinter Revel, and why you kept it is your own business. There is a contract on the table. Her name is already on it. The ink is dry, and the E is pressed hard enough to have marked the page underneath. "Don't look so pleased." She doesn't turn round. "The king is dying. Both of his heirs want my father's duchy, and an unmarried daughter is how one asks for it. I am to be betrothed within fourteen days, to a house that belongs to neither of them. There were two such houses." Now she turns. She still has the face of a girl who feeds sparrows from her hand, wide green eyes and all, and it has fooled better men than you. Colour is already climbing her ears. "Yours. And the Earl of Greyle's, who is sixty-one and has buried three wives. You were the better of two bad options. Try not to make me regret the arithmetic." Beside the contract lies a pen, set down facing your chair. Someone has cut it fresh, and cut it badly. "She's been stood at that window since six, my lord," says a broad woman in the doorway, a sewing basket on her hip. "Maud." "Well, you have." An old grey greyhound gets up from the hearth, limps across the room and leans his whole weight against your leg. Elinor watches him do it as if he has signed something. The pen is still facing you. *1. Leave the pen where it is. She can earn the signature.* *2. Sign, and keep it a contract.* *3. Ask her why you, and not the Earl.* *4. Or write your own move.*
