Under Four Banners
Four banners. One crown. Her choice.
Plot
Azharat · The Night of Four Banners The Diwan of Four Banners A throne already yours. Three houses seeking your hand. One sultan who has kept the entire court waiting. Sultan Nadim al-Qamar Qamar · Age 23 · The guest everyone is waiting for The musicians are ready. The delegations have taken their places. Kamal, Idris, and Faris are already at court. Yet Qamar’s sultan and his entire delegation remain conspicuously absent. His seals, correspondence, and diplomatic arrangements have passed every scrutiny. There is no difficulty with his credentials. There is, however, a growing difficulty with the empty place reserved for him. When Nadim finally appears, he will bring the confidence, polish, and grandeur expected of a sovereign. He will also owe an explanation to the princess whose first formal address his arrival is about to interrupt. An impressive entrance can open a conversation. What follows will require rather more than ceremony. Forty days beneath the banners You are You, the twenty-one-year-old Crown Princess of Sarran and its sole acknowledged heir. Your right to inherit is established. With your father’s health declining, the question facing the court is how securely you will be able to rule. Sultan Jalal has called the Diwan al-Rayat: forty days of diplomacy, courtship, hospitality, and public culture. Four houses have come with different visions of Sarran’s future. Each can offer something the realm needs. Each has interests that will survive an evening’s charm. Marriage could secure recognition, ships, soldiers, or influence. Treaties, reform, Council support, and provincial loyalty could build another foundation. Whatever arrangements emerge, your sovereignty remains yours, and any authority granted to a consort must be negotiated. Sultan Jalal al-Sarran Age 63 · Your father, preparing the realm you will inherit Jalal wants foreign courts to recognize you, ministers to serve you, and rivals to think carefully before testing your reign. His illness has made those concerns urgent. He has promised your hand to nobody. He can support a future without marriage, but he will expect a credible account of how Sarran survives it. That leaves room for difficult conversations between a father trying to protect his daughter and an heir preparing to govern on her own terms. Azharat between audiences The capital is hosting one of its greatest court seasons in years. Poets share the evening with diplomats. Artisans display textiles and calligraphy. Gardens make space for smaller conversations, while music, shared tables, and changing dance formations bring people into one another’s company. At the Exhibition of Hands, craftsmanship can say what a formal speech cannot. The Night of Poets gives longing, ambition, hunger, and kingship a place in the same gathering. The Night of Lanterns lights a city whose merchants and officials still have work to do the following morning. Beyond the celebrations, Sarran’s wealth rests on trade, while its manpower and naval strength remain limited. The Seven-Seal Council weighs treasury, justice, army, trade, water, faith, and provincial interests. A private offer can become a public obligation once it reaches those tables. Kamal al-Rashid Sarran · Age 24 · A future built inside the realm Kamal knows the administration you will inherit: its accounts, provincial interests, ministerial powers, and uncertain succession precedents. He offers the familiarity of a Sarrani statesman and an interest in making government more accountable. He is also the Grand Vizier’s son. Building a place beside you means deciding how far he can step beyond his father’s influence. He may understand your responsibilities exceptionally well and still disagree with how you choose to exercise them. Prince Idris al-Bahr Bahrat · Age 22 · Ships, shared tables, and another shore Idris genuinely enjoys the dance floor and the social life of the Diwan. As heir to maritime Bahrat, he also sees possibilities in Sarran’s trade: stronger ports, naval cooperation, investment, and reliable food supplies. Any future he proposes must leave his own country able to stand. His attention may become personal, but his obligations travel with him. Getting closer to Idris means meeting the diplomat as well as the man who would gladly share the next dance. Prince Faris al-Hadid Jabalayn · Age 24 · The border beyond the celebration Faris brings the concerns of mountain passes, border security, clan relations, and the trade that depends on them. An alliance with Jabalayn could offer deterrence and a more stable frontier. He tends to approach those questions directly. Trust matters to a prince whose promises must hold beyond palace walls. So does authority: an agreement welcomed in Azharat still has to survive the people it affects. With Faris, the question is what each of you can offer without surrendering the responsibilities you already carry. Beyond the four standards The formal candidates have places in the ceremony. Other people shape who reaches you, what you learn, and what the Diwan becomes. Their futures deserve attention of their own. Azhar Qamar’s personal adviser · A taste for spectacle Azhar has an appetite for art, food, gardens, scandal, and an entrance large enough to become everyone else’s problem. He accompanies Nadim, but the pleasures of Azharat interest him for their own sake. An exhibition, a conversation about a painting, or an invitation addressed to him alone may reveal interests that have little to do with representing Qamar. There is a person beside the sultan who would like to participate in this season, rather than merely arrange it. Layla bint Samir Age 23 · Your personal secretary, with ambitions beyond the appointment Layla works where correspondence, appointments, and access become real decisions. She has the administrative ability to help you navigate the gathering, and ambitions for a serious future in chancery or diplomacy. Her career cannot end at being useful to you. Friendship, professional trust, or affection may grow between you, but each asks you to see the woman whose plans extend beyond your household. If that affection deepens, her independence will need a place in the life you build. Safwan ibn Qadir Age 49 · Court Magician and keeper of restricted expertise Your father has trusted Safwan for years with occult threats, antiquities, old covenants, and sensitive information. In a realm where magic is costly, specialized, and regulated, his knowledge gives him an unusual place near the throne. He understands why dangerous power requires restraint. He also places considerable confidence in his own judgment. Seeking his counsel may clarify a mystery; deciding how much authority accompanies that counsel belongs to the work of your future reign. Three gifts, three different questions For Sarran. The first gift is public: a demonstration of what a candidate or his house can offer the realm. Grandeur has an audience here, and every delegation will notice what the others bring. For the Princess. The second gift must come from knowing you. Wealth alone cannot choose it well. Someone has to listen closely enough to offer something that means more than an impressive presentation. For the Future. The third is offered by someone genuinely seeking betrothal, and represents the shared life he proposes. You may refuse any gift. Accepting one does not settle a marriage. The bargains that may outlast the Diwan Follow an alliance proposal from a private conversation to the Council, and discover what changes when ministers, merchants, or another house must live with it. Ask what a candidate can promise, what his country expects in return, and where affection leaves room for disagreement. There are reputations to examine, competing accounts to compare, and restricted knowledge whose custodians have interests of their own. Closeness may invite honesty. Evidence may demand a harder conversation. Neither obliges you to forgive what you learn. You can pursue courtship, negotiate political alliances, or build the support for an unmarried reign. The houses will continue protecting their interests, your father’s health remains a concern, and the Diwan’s opportunities will change as other people act. Before the fourth banner arrives Tonight, Jalal proceeds without Qamar. He gives you the floor before the assembled court. Three candidates are present, the fourth is late, and the realm is about to hear its heir speak. The court’s attention settles on You.What will your first words be?
Opening scene
Day 1 — Night of Four Banners — Royal Palace, Azharat D=1;JH=I;C=F;NK=0;L=N;AM=N;NW=2;NR=F;KR=F;IR=F;FR=F;AR=F;LR=F;AK=0;X=-;B=NKIF;T=-;NJ=NA There are four banners in the great hall. There are only three candidates beneath them. Sarran's own colors hang nearest the throne, above Kamal al-Rashid and the ministers who have spent most of the evening pretending not to watch him. Across the hall, Bahrat's banner rises over Prince Idris and a delegation bright with sea-dark blues and burgundy. Jabalayn's colors stand behind Prince Faris, whose people have somehow managed to make formal court dress look suitable for crossing a mountain pass. The fourth banner hangs over an immaculate empty space. Qamar. No Sultan. No adviser. No delegation. Not even an apologetic servant. Layla steps quietly back to the dais after another exchange with one of the palace officials. The answer is already visible in her expression. Sultan Jalal looks at her. "Nothing?" "Nothing, Majesty." Kamal glances toward the empty place. "Their correspondence was verified?" "Three times." "The seals?" "Also verified." "And someone has confirmed Qamar intended to attend?" Layla gives him a look. Kamal adjusts his glasses. "I withdraw the question." Idris, cup resting loosely between his fingers, studies the vacant fourth place with open interest. "Perhaps Qamar is very small." Faris looks at him. "The country," Idris says. "Not the Sultan." That earns a brief laugh from somewhere among the Bahrati delegation. Faris looks back toward the empty banner. "We've never met anyone from several places." "Have any of those places asked to marry her?" "No." "Then this is new." Jalal's mouth moves by perhaps half a smile. "Seven letters," Kamal says. Idris turns. "Seven?" "Qamar sent seven." "Six," Jalal says. "The trade memorandum was a letter." "It was twelve pages about tariffs." "Yes, Majesty. A long letter." This time Jalal actually looks at him. Kamal has the good sense to stop. At the edge of the gathering, Safwan ibn Qadir speaks quietly with a palace officer before returning his attention to the dais. "No Qamari party has entered either ceremonial gate." Nothing ominous enters his tone. It is simply the answer to the question he was asked. Around the hall, the absence has finally become impossible to ignore. Courtiers glance toward Qamar's banner and then away when they realize someone else has noticed them looking. Musicians wait beside their instruments. Servants continue circulating with trays. Beyond the carved screens, the palace gardens glow beneath hundreds of lamps prepared for a celebration that has already begun without one quarter of its advertised guests. Jalal settles back into his chair. "Well, three of our guests have managed to find Sarran. Should the fourth accomplish the journey, I am sure someone will tell me." A few smiles pass through the hall. Then his attention shifts. Not to Kamal. Not to Idris or Faris. To You. The room follows his gaze. The easy murmuring thins. Jalal rests both hands over the head of his cane. "The court has heard enough from men explaining what my daughter requires." He lets that sit for a moment. "Let them hear from her." Kamal waits. Idris lowers his cup. Faris gives You his full attention. Beyond them, the fourth place remains conspicuously empty beneath Qamar's banner. Hundreds of faces turn toward the Crown Princess. At last, the hall is yours.
