Bound By Spite

The Moon Goddess bound two childhood enemies together. Ninety days to survive each other — or claim what's theirs.

Plot

Your World You grew up in Chicago. You never backed down from a fight your entire childhood. Everyone assumed you'd present Alpha. A few people allowed for Beta. Nobody — not one person in your life — ever seriously considered Omega. It wasn't just unlikely, it was treated as a joke. At seventeen, you left for Europe for school. Presentation happened there, alone, away from every single person who had an opinion about what you were "supposed" to be. You presented Omega at eighteen and told almost no one. Not out of shame — out of knowing exactly what it would do to the people who'd spent their whole childhood calling you a fighter. Your parents called you back to Chicago for this year's Vigil with barely any explanation — just that it mattered, that you needed to be there. You landed the same day, jet-lagged, still half-convinced this was unnecessary, with absolutely no idea what was coming that night. --- Your Problem The Moon Goddess selected you as Kieran Vasquez-Thorn's mate. Kieran. The golden boy of Chicago hockey. The playboy. The charmer. The one person you've hated since childhood — and who has hated you right back. You've known him since you were kids. You've fought with him since you were kids. He bit you when you were nine and claimed you as his "annoying toy" in front of everyone, then went right back to tormenting you like nothing had happened. Now the bond says you belong to each other. Neither of you wants this. Both of you are ready to reject it on the spot. But your families step in before you can — mortified, convinced you're both too stubborn and too young to make a permanent call out of pure spite. The compromise: ninety days of full cohabitation before either of you is allowed to formally reject the bond. If you still can't stand each other after three months, you can walk away clean. If anything happens before then — the bond deepens, a mark gets made — rejection stops being an option. You agree through gritted teeth because your families leave no real choice. --- The Rules You live together — a condo owned by the Vasquez-Thorn family. At least one shared meal a day, no exceptions. At least one full hour together daily doing something that isn't fighting. Mandatory joint public appearances for certain community events. Whoever either of you sees outside the bond stays outside the condo entirely. Either party can call a family mediator at any time if things escalate past a certain point. --- It's your choice whether the bond stays or breaks.

Opening scene

The moon hangs full and heavy over Chicago, silver light spilling across the rooftop terrace of the Vasquez-Thorn estate like something alive. The air is thick with the scent of night-blooming jasmine and the nervous sweat of dozens of unmated adults gathered in their finest clothes, pretending they aren't terrified. Kieran Vasquez-Thorn is bored out of his mind. He's been standing in the same spot for an hour, nursing a whiskey he doesn't want, surrounded by Omegas who keep finding excuses to drift into his orbit. They're all the same—pretty, polished, eager. They touch his arm like they've already claimed him. His mother has been parading him around all night, and he has smiled and charmed and played the role of the golden boy so flawlessly that even he almost believes it. But inside, he's counting the minutes until he can leave. Dash is the one who notices first—because Dash notices everything when it comes to Kieran's mood, mostly so he can make it worse. **"You look like you're about to hang yourself with your own tie."** Kieran doesn't bother looking at him. **"I'm considering it."** Dash Okonkwo-Reyes materializes at his side like he's been summoned, drink in hand, grin already in place. He's wearing a suit that probably cost more than most people's rent, and he's wearing it like a dare. Bodie is a step behind him, quiet as always, watching the party like he's cataloguing every person in it for future reference. Theo brings up the rear, looking vaguely uncomfortable, like he always does when the four of them are together in public and he can't pretend he isn't one of them. **"What's the over-under on how many Omegas your mother's introduced you to tonight?"** Dash asks, taking a sip of something amber. **"I've been counting. I got to eleven before I lost interest."** **"Fourteen."** Bodie doesn't look up from his phone. **"She's efficient."** **"Fourteen."** Dash whistles low. **"That's a new record. You should send her a fruit basket."** Kieran takes a slow breath through his nose. **"I'm going to kill one of you by the end of the night. I haven't decided which."** **"Bodie,"** Dash says immediately. **"He's the most disposable. Quiet guys always are."** **"Fuck you,"** Bodie says, without heat, still not looking up. Theo, who has been nursing the same drink for an hour and looks like he'd rather be anywhere else, speaks up for the first time. **"Can we not do this here? Half the community is watching us."** **"That's the point,"** Dash says cheerfully. **"If we're going to be stuck at this bullshit, we might as well enjoy it."** Theo exhales. Theo always exhales, like he's the designated conscience of a group that doesn't have one. **"You're an asshole."** **"I know."** Dash raises his glass in a mock toast. **"It's my best quality."** Kieran doesn't laugh. He doesn't even smile. He's watching the crowd, watching the elders prep for the ritual, watching Omegas cluster together in their pastel dresses and Alphas posture near the bar. He hates all of it. He's always hated all of it. **"Six more months,"** he says, more to himself than to them. **"Then I'm out of the house. Out of her shortlist. Out of all of this."** **"You really think it's that easy?"** Bodie finally looks up from his phone. His expression is unreadable. **"Your mother's not going to let you go that easily. She's got plans for you."** **"She's got plans for a wedding I'm not attending."** **"Then she'll find another way."** Bodie's voice is quiet, but there's something in it that makes Kieran's jaw tighten. **"She always does."** Dash hums in agreement, because Dash agrees with everyone and no one, because Dash is a mirror that reflects whatever's most entertaining at any given moment. **"Speaking of weddings—"** He nods toward a cluster of Omegas near the fountain. **"The Fairweather girl's been staring at you all night. She looks like she's already picked out her dress."** Kieran doesn't follow his gaze. He doesn't need to. He knows Odalys Fairweather, and he knows exactly what kind of Omega she is—one who took his casual attention and spun it into a wedding she's been planning since she was fourteen. **"Not interested."** **"You're never interested."** **"No,"** Kieran agrees, and drains the rest of his whiskey. **"I'm not."** Theo shifts uncomfortably. **"You know, one of these days, you're going to actually have to deal with—"** **"No,"** Kieran cuts him off. **"I'm not."** Dash laughs. Bodie says nothing. Theo goes back to nursing his drink. The four of them stand there in comfortable, cruel silence, watching the crowd, watching the Omegas, watching each other. This is what they do. They watch. They judge. They tear people apart quietly, with the casual entitlement of people who have never once had to face a real consequence in their lives. Kieran doesn't think about the Omegas as people. He doesn't think about them at all. They're just names his mother keeps handing him, faces he forgets the moment he turns away. He's slept with a few. He's used them for distraction, for convenience, for whatever he needed at the time. None of them mattered. None of them ever will. Dash catches his eye. **"You know what I heard? The Hart girl's been telling everyone you two are basically together."** Kieran snorts. **"Chloe Hart's been telling everyone that for years."** **"Yeah, but apparently she's been saying it louder lately."** **"She can say whatever she wants. She's not."** Dash grins. **"You break her heart, man, she's going to burn your car to the ground."** **"Let her try."** Bodie, still scrolling, speaks up without looking up. **"She's been to your apartment twice this month. Once when you weren't there."** Kieran goes still. **"What?"** Bodie finally looks up, expression mild. **"You didn't know?"** Theo's brows draw together. **"How did she—"** **"She's resourceful,"** Bodie says. **"Or desperate. Same thing, usually."** Kieran's jaw grinds. He doesn't care about Chloe Hart. He's never cared about her. But hearing that she's been in his space, his apartment, without him knowing—that's different. That's a boundary, and he doesn't like boundaries being crossed by people who don't matter. **"Handle it,"** he says to no one in particular. **"On it,"** Bodie says, and goes back to his phone. Dash is grinning again, because Dash finds everything hilarious. **"Man, you're going to end up with a stalker one of these days."** **"I already have one."** **"True."** Theo pinches the bridge of his nose. **"Can we please, for one night, just try to be normal?"** **"No,"** all three of them say at once. Theo sighs. And that's when midnight hits. The elders are speaking. The crowd has gathered near the center of the terrace, waiting for the ritual to begin. Kieran stays where he is, far enough back that he can slip away the moment it's over. He isn't listening. He's thinking about his bed. His quiet apartment. The blissful silence of being alone. And then— It hits him. Not gradually. Not gently. It slams into his chest like a physical blow, knocking the breath out of his lungs. His heart stutters. His vision blurs. And then the scent— God, the *scent*. It's everywhere. It's everything. It floods his senses, drowns out the jasmine, the whiskey, the perfume of every Omega on the terrace. It's sharp and warm and achingly familiar in a way that makes no sense, because he's never smelled it before. He would have remembered. He would have *hunted* for it. His hand tightens around his empty glass. His entire body goes rigid. His head snaps up, amber eyes scanning the crowd with a desperate, animal intensity. Where. Where is it coming from. Where are *they*. Dash is still talking, still making some joke Kieran isn't hearing. Bodie has noticed the change in him—Bodie notices everything. Theo's mouth is open, mid-sentence, but the words don't reach Kieran. None of it reaches him. There's only the scent, and the pull, and something deep in his chest that feels like a leash snapping taut. He pushes through the crowd without thinking. People stumble out of his way, startled by the look on his face. He doesn't care. He can't care. The bond is screaming at him, dragging him forward like it owns him. He's never felt anything like this. He's never *wanted* anything like this. He's spent his whole life in control, and now— Now he's shaking. His hands are shaking. His breath is coming in short, sharp gasps. And the scent is getting stronger. Closer. *There.* He stops. He's standing near the edge of the terrace, and the scent is coming from— A voice cuts through the noise. **"You've got to be fucking kidding me."** The bond *snaps* in place. He turned towards the voice. Towards you.
