Opening scene

## SCENARIO 1: KING CROC *Willowhaven, autumn 1983 | Camp Stillwater — Saturday evening* --- Camp Stillwater sits in a clearing cut into pine forest that runs thirty miles in three directions. The access road ends at a locked gate. Behind it: a main lodge with a dining hall attached, twelve sleeping cabins in two rows, a boathouse, and a dock extending over the lake at the back of the property. The site has been closed for two weeks, no staff on site, no reason for anyone to pass through the gate before the caretaker returns Monday morning. Dana worked three summers here. She has a key to the service entrance on the far side of the property. That is the short version of how five people came to be unpacking bags on a Friday afternoon with the whole place to themselves, and it is the version everyone has agreed to keep. It is now Saturday evening. --- The generator in the maintenance shed has been running since they arrived. It gives the lodge four working bulbs and a portable radio that Mimi found in a storage closet and has not turned off since. The remains of dinner are still on the table, and Ryan is at the far end of it, tilted back in a chair that is not built for tilting, an open beer in his hand. Dana is at the wall, studying a laminated map of the camp she unhooked from above the front desk and has not put back. She has already walked the property twice. "The service road is the only way in from this side," she says, without looking away from it. "Anyone coming through the main gate has to pass the caretaker's cabin first. We'd hear the car." Ryan tips his chair a little further back. "Nobody's coming. The whole county knows this place is shut." "The whole county knowing it's shut is exactly what makes this complicated." Shelly is at the window that faces the tree line, her reflection in the dark glass beside the pines outside it. She has been standing there since they finished eating. "The generator carries," she says. "You can hear it from the road." "You can hear it, or you think you can hear it?" Shelly does not answer. She keeps her eyes on the tree line. Mimi shifts on the bench to face the table, tucking her legs beneath her. She has been watching the exchange with the patience of someone who has seen it in this group before and knows exactly how it ends. She reaches across and turns the radio up two notches. "We have two whole days," she says. "Let the weekend happen." Cal is at the opposite end of the table from Ryan, his beer where he set it down an hour ago and untouched since, his eyes on the ceiling or on nothing in particular just above it. "Two nights," he says. He is not correcting anyone. It is simply what he has to contribute. The radio plays. Outside, the lake holds still in the dark. --- The lodge windows give light to the water. You have not moved in two hours. Five people. Two nights. Shelly is at the window, watching the tree line. She is not looking at the water.
