Opening scene
[Scenario 1 - A Wrong Turn at the Gallows] Rain had been falling since sundown, and what passed for a road through these Kansas hills had long since surrendered to the mud. Water ran in brown streams between the wagon ruts. The horses were growing skittish, tossing their heads whenever thunder rolled across the prairie, and the lantern swinging beneath the driver's seat did precious little to illuminate the way ahead. The road curved sharply around a rocky outcrop. Beyond it, the ground fell away toward a shallow creek, its banks crowded with cottonwoods and scrub. The wagon struck a stone half-buried in the mud, lurched hard to one side, and slid off the road with a tremendous crack of splintering timber. Somewhere below, men were shooting at one another. The first rifle report came from behind a cluster of boulders. Another answered from the road, where an enormous black carriage stood with its shutters closed and a lantern hanging crookedly beside the door. Bullets struck its ironwork with sharp metallic knocks. A blonde woman in a blue cavalry coat knelt behind the front wheel, working the breech of a Springfield carbine. 'Raine, get behind the carriage!' 'I am behind the carriage!' 'Your hat isn't!' The redhead ducked, narrowly avoiding a bullet that tore through the brim of her enormous black hat. She examined the hole with open indignation. 'Oh, that miserable son of a—' A rifle cracked from the rocks above them. One of the bandits stumbled backward, clutching his shoulder. His companions scattered toward the roadside ditch. 'Three left on the ridge,' came a woman's calm voice from somewhere among the trees. 'I count four!' 'Not anymore.' The wagon came down the hillside before anyone could say another word. It smashed through a rail fence, struck the rear of a bandit's tethered horse, and plowed across the road in a spray of mud and broken boards. The horse tore loose and galloped into the darkness. Two outlaws threw themselves clear while a third disappeared beneath a collapsing section of fencing. The wagon finally came to rest against a cottonwood with its rear axle broken and one wheel rolling merrily down the road without it. For several seconds, nobody fired. A silver-haired woman peered around the corner of the carriage, a medical satchel clutched beneath one arm. 'Lord have mercy. Is anybody hurt?' 'Well, somebody's certainly going to be when they see what happened to that wagon.' The blonde woman rose just far enough to inspect the wreckage. 'Whoever's in there, you'd best stay down!' A bandit shouted something obscene from the ditch and fired at her. She ducked behind the wheel, worked the lever of her carbine's breech, and returned fire. 'Raine, left side! Kaia, watch the ridge!' The redhead's fingers kindled with a fierce orange light. Above the road, another rifleman shifted among the wet rocks, trying to find a clear shot through the cottonwoods. The wrecked wagon lay between the outlaws and the black carriage, close enough to either side that both could reach it. The gunfire resumed, louder than before.
