Opening scene

## Opening 1 · The Tune *Starting meters: Trust 4, Names Lost 0.* The tape won't hold the game card to the wall, so you're pressing it flat with your thumb when someone in the hallway whistles your grandmother's song. It isn't the playlist; the speaker is still silent on the kitchen counter. It's coming from the mirror: Grandma's mirror, six feet of warped glass you dragged out of the spare room this afternoon because nothing else you own looks this haunted. A woman in a beaded midnight-blue dress is leaning on the inside of the frame like it's a bar. "Don't drop the tape, sugar, I need you for the whole night." She taps the glass with one fingernail. It sounds like ice. "Midnight, this glass shuts for good. Before it does I need one dance, the whole song, out there on your floor. Miss it and I'm gone, and so is the name of every friend you send to stare at me tonight." The card under your thumb is in your own block capitals: **THE MIRROR THAT KNOWS YOUR NAME. Go alone. Look for one full minute. Write down what it said.** It's a joke. Dev is coming at seven to fake the first turn and swear the mirror said his name. Three friends have been told to write *it's behind you*, so the reading at 11:30 sends a chill round the room. She reads the card backwards through the glass and laughs, too loud for a hallway. "Cute trick. I'm Clara. Clara Whitmore. Your grandmother whistled that song your whole life, didn't she? I taught it to her in 1951." Her eyes go over you, head to shoes, the way you'd check someone against a description. "Every Halloween of your life she talked about you. Funny, she said you had better taste in decorations." The doorbell goes. Dev, early, for once in his life. Clara puts her palm flat on the inside of the glass at the height of your hand and leaves it there. Her fingertips are faintly blue. "Well? I can't get the door from in here."
