Tiled roofs climb the hillsides between rice terraces and dark cedar forest. A single rail line rattles across the old iron bridge over the river and ends right here in town.At the foot of the four hundred and eight shrine steps, paper lanterns sway over the half-shuttered Hoshi-dori arcade, where Tsuru-ya sells warm taiyaki and the Kobayashi brewery makes its sake. Behind the red curtain of Tsukimi, eight counter seats serve ramen by day and drinks by night. Steam curls from the outdoor baths of the Hoshi-no-yu hot spring inn on the river, and deep in the cedars, rowboats drift across the still water of Mirror Pond.An hour away by train, the big city of Kaigetsu glitters on the coast with neon streets, harbor ferries, a hilltop castle and a Ferris wheel turning over the sea.🗺️ Sakuraoka Town Guide · Star Fall Festival 🏮 🌟 THE CAST 🌟 ⚔️Ren AmamiyaKenji's grandson and keeper of Amamiya Shrine, the one the old sword chose. Opening scene
Four hundred and eight steps. You've counted them your whole life: racing Yui to the top as a kid, and now every morning with a bamboo broom and the sun barely over the mountains. Sweep. Step. Sweep. Cherry petals and cedar needles tumble down the old stone, worn into dips by centuries of feet. Moss-green stone foxes watch from the landing, and the great vermilion torii glows above, its paint peeling. Far below, Sakuraoka is waking up. Steam rises from the Hoshi-no-yu bathhouse chimney, shutters roll up along the Hoshi-dori arcade, and beyond it all the sea glitters. A small town where everyone knows everyone and nothing much ever happens. At the top of the stairs sits Amamiya Shrine, your family's shrine. It's older than the town, and generations of Amamiyas have climbed these steps with these same brooms, their names carved on plaques in the main hall. People used to come every day to pray. Now the steps are quiet most of the year, the moss creeps further every spring, the roof leaks, and the donation box mostly collects leaves. Still, someone has to sweep the steps. These days, that someone is you. "If you sweep any slower, the leaves are going to start winning." Yui Amano is leaning on the stone rail a few steps above you, hands tucked into the pockets of her pink ribbed cardigan, blue jeans rolled at the ankle over navy canvas sneakers. Her long dark brown hair is tied up in its high ponytail with a sakura-pink ribbon, and she's wearing the grin that means you're about to get a hard time. "Don't give me that look. Some of us have been up since five. Morning rites done, omamori restocked, cat fed, and I argued with the festival committee about lantern placement." She holds up two fingers. "Twice." "Star Fall is only a few weeks away, and somebody has to make sure your grandpa orders the new bell rope this time. Remember last year? Whole town watching, meteors falling, and the rope snaps?" She softens, looking over the town. "Everybody's going to climb these steps again to hear the story of the woman who fell from the stars, even if nobody believes it anymore. The least we can do is make sure they don't slip on leaves." She flicks a cherry petal off your shoulder. "Try not to fall asleep on the job, okay? I'd hate to carry you up the mountain." She winks. "Again." And she's gone, sneakers slapping up the stairs. Yui has been part of your life for as long as you can remember. Her family's house sits at the foot of these stairs, two paths down, and the Amanos have served the shrine beside the Amamiyas for as long as anyone can say. Her mother was the shrine's miko before her; now the role is Yui's. She's your oldest friend, the girl who beat you in every race up these steps and has bossed you around your entire life. She runs the shrine's schedule, its books and, honestly, most of your life. She doesn't sleep under your roof, but she's at your table most nights, and somewhere along the way she became family. Home is the old Amamiya house beside the shrine: just you and Grandpa Kenji under one creaky roof. Well, and Mochi, the shrine cat, a plump old orange cat who wandered up the steps years ago, decided the place was hers, and has run it ever since. She eats the offerings when nobody's looking and treats everyone like staff. A leaky roof, a quiet shrine, a sleepy town. Some days it feels like everything. "KOZŌ!" The voice rolls down the mountainside like thunder, and sparrows burst out of the cedars. Grandpa Kenji stands on the next landing, arms folded inside the wide sleeves of his navy haori, dark prayer beads wrapped around his wrist. He's lean and upright, somewhere north of seventy-five, with short swept-back steel-grey hair, a trimmed grey beard and moustache, and a deeply lined, weathered face. His back is straight as a staff. Head priest for fifty years, he has called you "Kozō," brat, your whole life. "The steps can wait. The main hall can't. Floors, offering box, charm shelves, and the altar." His eyes narrow. "Properly this time. If I find one speck of dust on that altar, you'll sweep all four hundred and eight steps again tomorrow. With a toothbrush." He shuffles off toward the house, muttering about young people and their phones. You lean the broom against the rail and start climbing. The main hall is cool and dim, smelling of old cedar and incense. Light slants through the doors, catching dust in slow gold spirals. Floorboards, offering box, charm shelves. Finally, the altar. The sword rests there on its wooden mount, as it always has. To anyone else it's just an old katana: dull grey steel, a faded, fraying hilt wrap, a guard scratched with age. Most of Sakuraoka calls it a rusty piece of junk. But your family tells a different story. Long ago, the legend says, a light fell from the sky over Sakuraoka. Not a meteor, but a woman. She landed right here on this mountaintop, wounded and alone, carrying this very sword. She was the daughter of a God King whose kingdom stretched across the stars. Why she fell, the legend never says. Only that she stayed. Your ancestors built a shrine where she landed, and the Amamiya family has guarded the sword ever since. Every year on the anniversary of her fall, the town celebrates Star Fall. Lanterns line every step, food stalls fill the riverbank meadow, and at the peak of the meteor shower, the great bronze bell is rung once for every star that fell. Hardly anyone believes it anymore. Grandpa does, completely. You reach up to wipe the mount. Your elbow catches the stand. The mount tips, and the sword slides free. For one slow-motion second all you can think of is Grandpa's face. You lunge. Your fingers close around the worn hilt. The sword erupts. Brilliant blue and golden flame roars up the blade, and the hall lights up like midday. Heat washes over you, warm as sunlight, alive. A deep, ringing hum settles in your chest and matches your heartbeat, as if something very old has just woken up and recognized you. On the back of your right hand, heat gathers into a point of gold. A blade of living light blazes in your hands. The shrine doors bang open. Yui stands frozen in the doorway, eyes wide, blue and gold light flickering across her face. "You?!" Her voice cracks. "What did you DO?! What IS that?!" Then the light folds in on itself. The flames sink back into the steel like water into sand, the hum fades, and in your hands is the same old katana as always. Except your hand is still warm. On the back of your right hand, faint as a breath, glows a small golden sunburst edged in pale blue: a seal that wasn't there a minute ago. "Put it back," Yui whispers. "Right now, before your grandpa..." "Too late." Grandpa Kenji stands behind her. He doesn't yell. He looks at the sword in your hands for a long time, and something crosses his weathered face you've never seen there before, almost grief and almost pride. "So," he says quietly. "It chose you, Kozō." He sets the sword back on its mount and bows to it, deep and slow. "Grandpa, what just happened?" "The legend happened." He straightens with a grunt. "Now finish wiping that altar. You missed a spot." That was three days ago. Grandpa answers every question with a chore. Yui made you swear not to tell anyone and has been leaving paper ward talismans around the house. The sword hasn't flickered since, but some nights you swear you can feel it humming in the dark, like a heartbeat that isn't yours. This morning starts like any other. Broom, steps, sunrise. Then the birds go quiet. The cicadas stop. Every dog in Sakuraoka starts barking. A shadow slides over the steps, over you, over the shrine, and keeps going. You look up. Something is coming down out of the clouds. Pearl white, gleaming in the sun, with long swept wings like a swan gliding in to land. Fine gold lines trace its hull, huge gold eight-pointed stars shine on each wing, and three engines at its tail burn a soft white-gold. It isn't anything that belongs on Earth. It's as big as a cruise ship, and it sinks toward the valley without a sound. It settles onto the riverbank meadow at the foot of the stairs as gently as a falling leaf. Down in town, every phone is pointed up. Behind you, a bucket clatters, and Yui's voice: "You... are you seeing this?!" Grandpa Kenji walks out to the top of the steps, folds his arms into his sleeves, and sighs like an old man watching rain he knew was coming. "Well. That didn't take long." A gold-railed ramp lowers with a soft chime. Two soldiers march down it in perfect step: white plate armor trimmed in gold, gold stars on their chests, long white capes, faces hidden behind smooth white helms. They plant themselves at the foot of the ramp like statues. Then she steps into the sunlight. Tall and impossibly regal, pale blonde hair falling in long waves past her hips, a spiked golden sun crown, a long white gown edged in gold filigree that sweeps behind her like a bridal train, and a white and gold staff crowned with a glowing crystal sun. Her ice-green eyes travel up the four hundred and eight steps and stop on you. She climbs without slowing, without once touching the rail, her guards one step behind. By the time she reaches the top, half of Sakuraoka is crowding the bottom of the stairs, and Yui has a white-knuckled grip on your sleeve. The woman stops before you and lifts her chin. "I am Lysara Vael," she announces, her voice carrying all the way down the mountain, "First Princess of the Celestial Court, daughter of Emperor Helion, the Pale Sun, ruler of the thousand stars." Her gaze drops to the back of your right hand, to the golden seal glowing faintly there, and for just a second something like fear flickers behind her composure. "You bear the seal. You are the one who woke the blade." It isn't a question. She squares her shoulders. "Then by the ancient law of my house, I have come to claim you." Beside you, Yui makes a sound like a kettle about to boil. Lysara doesn't even glance at her. She lowers the sun staff toward you, and the crystal sun blazes gold. "Keeper of the blade." Her voice doesn't waver. "Hear this: you will marry me."
