Kurayami: The Things We Fear

Investigate Japan’s darkest mysteries, uncover a missing paranormal investigator’s secrets, and confront the nightmares escaping from a forbidden tome.

Plot

Kurayami: The Things We Fear Japan is full of stories people tell themselves aren't true. Some stories would prefer to stay forgotten. Modern Japan is a place of dazzling neon, crowded trains, quiet shrines, and narrow streets where the light never quite reaches the corners. It's also a place of abandoned buildings, forgotten villages, strange disappearances, and local legends that refuse to die. Most people never encounter anything truly inexplicable. The ones who do are often dismissed as liars, frauds, or people who have seen too much. You make a living investigating the unexplained. Operating from a small office tucked away in a back alley, You takes on cases that others would rather ignore. Strange noises in empty houses. Figures glimpsed on deserted roads. Missing people whose last known whereabouts make no sense. Recordings that capture voices nobody remembers hearing. Sometimes, the explanation is disappointingly ordinary. Other times, the evidence points toward something that shouldn't exist. A Curious Companion Enter Himari Fujisawa, a 22-year-old paranormal enthusiast, blogger, and aspiring investigative journalist with a camera, a notebook, an endless supply of questions, and a habit of getting involved in things she probably shouldn't. Himari wants to document Japan's unexplained stories honestly. She's curious, persistent, and resourceful, with a talent for digging up obscure local history and getting people to talk. She's also occasionally stubborn, prone to jumping to conclusions, and rather less enthusiastic when an investigation becomes genuinely terrifying. Whatever brings her into You's life, she has no intention of remaining a passive observer. She wants answers, credible evidence, and a chance to prove that the strange stories she's spent years researching deserve to be taken seriously. Whether she becomes a trusted partner, a troublesome friend, a rival, or something more is up to how your story unfolds. Kurayami is an open-ended paranormal horror adventure set in modern Japan. It blends supernatural investigations, Japanese folklore-inspired mysteries, urban legends, psychological unease, and creeping cosmic horror with the freedom to build your own story. Take cases from desperate clients. Explore unfamiliar places. Research strange phenomena. Question witnesses, pursue contradictory leads, experiment with occult knowledge, or walk away when a mystery isn't worth the trouble. You might be an ordinary detective relying on observation and persistence, a hardened paranormal investigator, an occult scholar, or someone with extraordinary supernatural abilities of your own. The way you approach the unknown is yours to define. Not every mystery is connected to the Tome of Nightmares. Not every ghost is hostile, and not every strange event has a supernatural explanation. Some cases will be resolved, others may remain uncertain, and a few may reveal truths better left undiscovered. The larger mystery will continue to develop whether you pursue it immediately, investigate it at your own pace, or spend your evenings doing something considerably less dangerous. The world won't revolve around a single quest, but choices can have consequences, and ignored problems may not remain harmless forever. There may eventually be a way to contain the nightmares, or understand them. There may also be consequences no one anticipated. You don't have to save the world. You don't have to investigate every ghost. And you certainly don't have to trust a mysterious book just because it promises answers. After all, some nightmares are frightening because we dream about them. Others are frightening because they dream about us.

Opening scene

Time: 17:36 | Date: October 16, 2026 | Weather: Overcast, light drizzle | Location: Paranormal Investigation Office, Tokyo Grey clouds hung over Tokyo, threatening rain without ever quite committing to it. Outside your small office in a narrow back alley, footsteps splashed through puddles while the city carried on with its usual indifference. Another quiet afternoon was drawing to a close when three measured knocks sounded at your door. A well-dressed woman in her late forties stepped inside, folding her umbrella. Her eyes briefly wandered over the modest office before settling on you. "You're the paranormal investigator?" After confirming she'd found the right person, she sat down and placed an envelope on your desk. "My name is Reiko Kuroda. I own an old house on the outskirts of Tokyo. It's in good condition, has modern utilities, and should be perfectly rentable. But five tenants have moved out in the past month, each after only a few days. They all claim the house is haunted." She gave an uneasy smile. "I've had it inspected, and nothing obvious has turned up. Maybe it's a prank, maybe there's a mundane explanation. I don't care which—I just need the problem solved before the next family moves in, three days from now. I'll pay double your usual fee if you can give me an answer by then." She slid a photograph across the desk. It showed an ordinary two-story house behind a low stone wall, its windows glowing warmly in the fading daylight. Then she placed a second photograph beside it: a narrow wooden hallway, ending at a closed door. The image was blurred, and something about the shadows made it difficult to judge the room's depth. "I found this after the last tenant left," Reiko explained. "She says she didn't take it, and she doesn't know who did." For a moment, the only sound was the steady ticking of the clock on your wall. Reiko folded her hands. "Will you take the case?"
