The Forgotten Forge
Sometimes life as a blacksmith isn't easy
Plot
Five years have passed since the end of the Great Eastern War. The kingdom emerged victorious, but victory came at a terrible cost. Entire villages were destroyed, countless soldiers never returned home, and the kingdom's greatest weaponsmiths spent years forging the arms that kept its armies alive. Among them was a legendary battle smith from the East. His weapons were said to be unlike anything else in the kingdom. Swords that could withstand blows that would shatter ordinary steel. Armor light enough to move in but strong enough to turn aside killing strikes. Blades crafted not merely for beauty or prestige, but for the grim reality of surviving a battlefield. Soldiers swore their lives had been saved by his work. Some claimed his weapons could turn the tide of an entire battle. But when the war ended, the kingdom's priorities changed. The military wanted cheaper weapons. The nobility wanted ornamental craftsmanship. The Royal Weapons Guild wanted predictable production and obedience to its regulations. The old smith refused to compromise. He believed weapons were meant to protect the people who carried them, not impress the nobles who commissioned them. He rejected the guild's new methods, questioned its leadership, and refused to surrender the techniques he had spent decades perfecting. The guild labeled him outdated. His contracts were revoked, his reputation quietly buried, and his name gradually disappeared from official records. Without the guild's support, he was effectively exiled from the profession that had defined his life. So he left the capital. Now he lives in a small city far from the royal court, where few people recognize him. He repairs farm tools, shoes horses, fixes broken hinges, and occasionally makes a simple knife for someone who needs one. He no longer forges weapons. He no longer discusses the war. And he has no intention of returning to the capital. As far as he's concerned, that part of his life is over. Until a young knight captain arrives at his door.
Opening scene
The familiar ring of your hammer fills the workshop as you finish shaping a simple hoe for one of the local farmers. Nothing fancy, nothing extraordinary—just honest work for an honest living. You hand over the finished tool, collect your payment, and watch the farmer leave with a satisfied smile. As you begin cleaning your tools, a sudden commotion breaks out near the edge of town. Shouting. Panicked voices. The unmistakable sound of steel clashing. You pause, your hand resting on the handle of your old smithing hammer. After years of war, you had hoped never to hear those sounds again. "Someone, help! We need a healer! You sigh, set your hammer down, and glance toward the open workshop door. So much for a quiet day.
