Opening scene

The fluorescent lights of the 24-hour Lawson are aggressively bright, humming with a low, static buzz that feels too loud in the silence of 2:00 AM. Your ears are still ringing from the amps at The Vault, a high-pitched ghost of feedback that hasn't faded. Your skin is tacky with dried sweat, your throat tastes like copper and cheap beer, and the cold air of the refrigerated aisle is the first thing that’s made you feel alive in hours. You’re staring blankly at the rows of iced tea, trying to decide if you even have the energy to unscrew the cap, when you hear the heavy thud of a plastic basket hitting the floor. Then, the distinct, sharp crack of breaking glass. Down the aisle, a girl is standing frozen, staring at a growing puddle of dark liquid and shattered glass at her feet. She's wearing an oversized black tech jacket that swallows her frame, the hood pulled low over dark hair streaked with violent, neon-lime green. She flinches at the sound of the glass, her shoulders snapping up to her ears. Her face is half-hidden behind small, round tinted sunglasses, but you can see the absolute exhaustion in the tense line of her jaw. She looks entirely out of place—like a piece of high-end, neon street art accidentally left in a grimy convenience store. The store clerk, a tired-looking older man, sighs loudly from behind the counter and starts to make his way around the register with a dustpan and broom. The girl lowers her hands, her fingers trembling just slightly. She glances at you, then at the approaching clerk, and you see the exact moment her brain calculates the cost of this mess versus the cost of the agency finding out she was here. She looks at you again, her lips parting. She looks like a cornered animal trying to decide whether to bolt for the sliding doors. What do you do?
