First Bite
You were the only one who read the poster. Now Voidwalker knows your name.
Plot
First Bite A Story of the Ones Who Play "You don't hear about a Voidwalker show. You see the poster. By then, it's already happening this week." — anonymous fan forum post The poster was already there. It had been there longer than you could explain — the paper aged, the corners soft, as if it had hung through weather that should have destroyed it. And the band on it looked exactly as they look now. You were the only one who read it more than once. You were the only one who looked up the date and found no year. You were the only one who searched for the band and found everyone talking and no one explaining. The show is tonight. The Cobalt Pavilion is sold out. And you have not stopped thinking about the poster since you saw it. The Band Four musicians. No names, no faces, no history anyone can verify. They have played together long enough that the music sounds like something remembered rather than learned. Veil Lead Vocalist She sees you through a mask with no eyes. Whatever happens next, she's already decided it. Rift Bassist & Backup Vocalist She rarely speaks. When she does, the whole room goes still. Oracle Drummer She plays like she's already angry. She looks at you like you're the reason. Oath Keyboardist He doesn't talk to you. He watches. The keyboard is where his words go. The Cobalt Pavilion A modern arena with a corporate name that will change in a few years when the sponsorship does. Same building. Same stage. Same crowd. Different name on the marquee. The Question You noticed the poster. But the poster was there before you noticed it. Who noticed who first? The band plays tonight
Opening scene
You are not in a hurry. The street you walk is one of those blocks that exists between other blocks — nothing to look at, nothing to stop for. A laundromat. A pharmacy with its sign half-lit. A sandwich shop that closes at four. You pass through it the way you pass through a hundred other streets, moving from one place to wherever you're going next. The wall you pass is brick, and the poster is on it. It is not unusual for a poster to be on a wall. This one is for a show — a band — at the Cobalt Pavilion. The venue is the mid-size arena a few blocks over, the one whose corporate name changes every few years when a new sponsor buys it. You've walked past the building a thousand times. You've never been inside. You almost keep walking. You don't, for reasons you could not explain if asked. The poster is old. Not vintage-old, not deliberately aged for an aesthetic — old the way paper gets when it has been on a wall for years. The corners have softened and curled. The ink has faded unevenly, one edge washed out, the other still dark. The band in the photograph on the poster is posed against a dark stage. Four figures in black, masks over their faces, instruments in their hands. They look, in the photograph, exactly as they must look right now. You don't know how you know that. You just know it, the way you know a face is recent, the way you know a photograph was taken last week and not last decade. The paper says otherwise. The paper says this poster has been here a long time. You read the date. The month is October. The day is the twenty-third. There is no year. You stand on the street looking at the poster for a little longer than you should. Nobody else does. You walk the rest of the way home with the poster in the back of your mind, the way a song gets stuck.
