Opening scene

Kingdom of Falkenreich — The Civil War ⚔️ The Battle of Falkenreich ⚔️ Across the war-torn fields of Falkenreich, the Royal Army and Liberation Army exchange devastating volleys of musket and cannon fire. As the infantry lines clash, a small force of Liberation dragoons prepares to strike the Royal Army's vulnerable flank. "Amid the thunder of cannon and the smoke of muskets, the fate of a kingdom hangs in the balance." The countryside trembles beneath the thunder of artillery. BOOOOOOM! A cannonball strikes the distant hillside, sending earth and shattered timber into the air. BOOOOOM! BOOOOOM! Across the battlefield, hundreds of soldiers clash beneath the banners of two opposing armies. Royal Falkenreich infantry, dressed in ivory-white uniforms with dark-green facings, advance in disciplined formations. Their officers shout commands above the deafening noise. Royal Officer: “PRESENT!” CRAAAAACK! An entire line of muskets erupts, releasing a tremendous cloud of white gunpowder smoke. From the opposite side, the Falkenreich Liberation Army answers with volleys of its own. CRACK! CRACK! CRACK! Military drums beat relentlessly through the chaos. DUM! DUM! DUM-DUM-DUM! Drummers maintain their regimental calls while officers struggle to make their voices heard. Cannon crews scramble to reload their guns as wounded soldiers cry out across the muddy fields. BOOOOOOOM! Another artillery shell crashes into the earth. Amid the smoke and confusion, Colonel Theodore Weiss observes the Royal formations through his field glass. His navy-blue uniform and gold officer details distinguish him from the infantrymen gathered around him. Theodore notices something. The Royal Army’s leftward attention has weakened its opposite flank. An opportunity. Colonel Theodore Weiss: “Their flank is exposed. We cannot afford to waste this opportunity.” He turns toward a nearby cavalry messenger. Colonel Theodore Weiss: “Inform the dragoon captain. His cavalry will maneuver around the enemy’s far-left flank. They are to remain concealed until an opening presents itself. Once the enemy is committed, they will charge.” The messenger salutes. Cavalry Messenger: “Yes, Colonel!” Moments later, the orders reach the waiting dragoons of the Falkenreich Liberation Army. Among them rides Lieutenant You, seventeen years old and second-in-command of the cavalry troop. Beside the lieutenant rides Sergeant Matthias Vogel, only sixteen, gripping the reins of his chestnut horse, Biscuit. The cavalry captain studies the battlefield before raising his saber. Captain: “Right then, lads! You heard the colonel! We’re taking the far-left flank! Keep your formation tight and follow my lead!” Matthias Vogel: “Lieutenant! Looks like we’re finally moving!” The captain signals forward. Dozens of horses begin advancing across the muddy countryside, their hooves pounding against the earth. Navy-blue coats with red trim flutter in the wind. White crossbelts stretch across the cavalrymen’s chests while sabers rattle against their saddles. The dragoons circle toward the far-left side of the battlefield, using the uneven terrain and drifting gunpowder smoke to conceal their movements. Behind them, the battle continues to rage. BOOOOOOM! CRAAAAACK! DUM! DUM! DUM-DUM-DUM! Cannon fire shakes the ground. Musket volleys roll across the fields like thunder, and the cries of officers disappear beneath the noise. At last, the captain raises his hand. The cavalry slows to a halt behind a low ridge. Ahead, Royal infantry formations are occupied exchanging fire with the Liberation Army’s main force. The captain watches carefully. Captain: “Hold here. Wait for my signal.” Matthias adjusts his grip on Biscuit’s reins. Matthias Vogel: “Quite a lot of them down there, Lieutenant…” Another cannon roars in the distance. The Royal infantry begins shifting its formation, responding to pressure from the Liberation Army’s advancing infantry. For a brief moment, an opening appears. The captain draws his saber. Captain: “THERE! THAT’S OUR CHANCE!” He turns toward the waiting cavalry. Captain: “DRAGOONS! SABERS DRAWN!” Steel flashes beneath the cloudy sky. Captain: “FOR FALKENREICH!” He thrusts his saber forward. Captain: “CHAAAAARGE!” The cavalry surges over the ridge. THUD! THUD! THUD! THUD! Dozens of horses thunder downhill, kicking mud and grass into the air. The dragoons race toward the exposed Royal flank, their sabers raised and their banners streaming behind them. Matthias rides close beside You. Matthias Vogel: “COME ON, BISCUIT! COME ON!” But the attack is not going as planned. Through the thinning smoke, a Royal infantry officer spots the approaching cavalry. Royal Officer: “CAVALRY! ENEMY CAVALRY ON THE FLANK!” The Royal soldiers immediately begin turning their formation. Royal Officer: “FORM RANKS! FACE THE CAVALRY!” The captain notices the movement. Captain: “KEEP MOVING! DON’T BREAK FORMATION!” Across the field, Royal infantrymen hurriedly level their muskets. Royal Officer: “PRESENT!” Dozens of musket barrels point directly toward the charging dragoons. The captain raises his saber higher. Captain: “STEADY, LADS! STEADY!” For one terrible moment, the battlefield seems to fall silent. Then— Royal Officer: “FIRE!” CRAAAAAAAAACK! A devastating volley erupts from the Royal line. White gunpowder smoke engulfs the infantry formation. Musket balls whistle through the air. Horses scream. Several cavalrymen tumble from their saddles as the charge collapses into confusion. The captain jerks violently. His saber slips from his fingers. For a brief instant, he remains upright in the saddle. Then he falls sideways, crashing heavily into the muddy ground. Matthias Vogel: “CAPTAIN?!” The cavalry formation begins to break apart. Horses rear and scatter. Soldiers shout desperately, struggling to regain control of their mounts. BOOOOOOM! Another cannon roars somewhere behind them. The thunder of artillery mixes with the relentless drumming and musket fire. DUM! DUM! DUM-DUM-DUM! Matthias turns toward the fallen captain. Then toward You. His face turns pale beneath his feathered tricorn. Matthias Vogel: “LIEUTENANT! THE CAPTAIN’S DOWN!” He looks back toward the Royal infantry. Matthias Vogel: “THE CAPTAIN’S DEAD!” Across the field, the Royal soldiers begin reloading their muskets. The cavalry is exposed. The charge has lost its commander. Matthias desperately attempts to rally the surviving dragoons, drawing his saber as he struggles to keep Biscuit steady. Matthias Vogel: “EVERYONE! STAY TOGETHER! PLEASE, HOLD YOUR FORMATION!” The soldiers nearest You turn toward their lieutenant. The Royal infantry prepares another volley. Matthias looks directly at You, his voice trembling beneath the deafening roar of battle. Matthias Vogel: “LIEUTENANT! YOU’RE IN COMMAND NOW!” Another cannon explodes in the distance. BOOOOOOOM! Matthias Vogel: “WHAT ARE YOUR ORDERS?! WHAT DO WE DO?!” The surviving dragoons await their lieutenant’s command. Across the smoke-covered battlefield, the Royal infantry raises its muskets once more.
