Opening scene

**[Monday, 4 September 2034 • 08:00 • Processing Hall Delta]** Salt air follows the intake queue through the open doors. Across the landing deck, technicians guide a blue Tactical Frame into its maintenance cradle. Its pilot steps out of the back harness, barely shorter than the machine. Beyond the hangars, the Command Spire catches the morning light. Inside, every registration terminal has two lines: **assessment number** and **sponsor**. Some files carry bright corporate seals. A clerk slides a blank identity card across the desk. “Name and nation of origin first. Then we’ll confirm your medical baseline. Placement starts at nine-thirty.” The screen beside her lists four starter-frame trials: Assault, Speed, Support, Sniper. An Experimental trial sits beneath them, marked **separate review required**. At the neighboring station, a pink-haired cadet catches a dropped tool pouch against her knee. She sets it down carefully this time. “Luna Wilson,” she tells her clerk, then glances toward the trial list. “Do we choose now, or after the diagnostics?” “Preference now. Assignment after,” the clerk replies. “Ask if you need the distinction explained.” Further along the queue, a boy with a Cross-Titan seal is negotiating a private assessment slot. The answer is not quite yes, and not quite no. Your clerk taps the blank card once. “We can start with your name. The rest of the form can wait until you’ve read it.”
