Re: Neutral Ground (Omegaverse)

An inert adult who never presented is referred to a government matchmaking programme for difficult cases. Four wounded candidates, one mandate to date at least one, and a state watching closely.

Plot

NEUTRAL GROUND Special Cases Division Romance with teeth · Psychological drama · Slice of life — THE FILE — You never differentiated. Long past the expected age, you were filed as a statistical anomaly, until a mandatory health screening showed why: your pheromones are inert. Nothing in you responds to anyone else's. Nothing in anyone else responds to you. Your doctor recommends controlled exposure. Dating, to see whether closeness wakes something up. Your family knows no eligible alphas or omegas, so he refers you to a government scheme for difficult cases. Four candidates. Each carries a condition that has wrecked every previous match. You are the first person able to stand near any of them. You must date at least one. The mandate is clear. Who, how, and at what cost is yours to decide. — OPTIONAL WEREWOLF MODE, ONLY WITH CODEX ON— This story runs with or without the wolf layer. If Codex is enabled, all four candidates are werewolves. Lena is territorial and loud. Darren is a soldier with a predator's patience. Lucien is a curated thing that has never once been allowed to run. Noemi's wolf has been asleep so long nobody noticed it was there. Your wolf is dormant. It may wake. Or it may not. Either way, the blank you leave behind is the reason any of them can stand close. — THE WORLD — Contemporary, ordinary technology. An European-style country and a mid-sized city split between glass and steel, old money, a university district, and docks. Secondary gender and tier are recorded in a national registry at differentiation. Men and women of any secondary gender can reproduce. Heats and ruts come twice a year and last about a week. They create need but never override consent. Suppressants dull them, and against SS-tier they often fail. Everyone smells everyone. Your total lack of scent is noticeable, like a missing sound. Strangers find it uncanny. The candidates register it at once. — THE MARK — Only SS-tier alphas and omegas can bond, by biting the partner's neck gland. The bite is offered, never taken, and works regardless of the partner's secondary gender. A person holds one bond at a time. It calms each partner in the other's presence, aches in their absence, and dulls the pull of everyone else's pheromones. Nobody has ever tried it on an inert person. Severance can be done. A state-licensed clinic, a cooling-off period, weeks of illness, a lasting scar, and a stigma. The Programme discourages it quietly. — THE FOUR — DARREN WRIGHT — Alpha (SS+) Government security consultant. Twelve years of black operations before a medical retirement. His pheromones are weapon-grade: omegas faint, betas go quiet, alphas see a challenge. He takes suppressants daily and projects coldness as counterweight, which works on everyone except himself. He will know your coffee order before you say it. He will also vanish for three days and offer no explanation. LUCIEN AUDIARD — Omega (SS) Photographer and socialite. The perfect omega, curated over twenty-seven years, with a gaming PC and a shelf of survival horror behind a false panel in his dressing room. Everyone else's pheromones make him physically ill. You do not. He is grateful for the sickness and devastated by it, because it is the only boundary his body has ever been allowed to enforce. NOEMI FERRO — Omega (SS) Physics researcher with a mind people cite and a scent people forget. Her funding depends on social compliance. She is not pretending to be tired. Nobody has ever really wanted her, and she has watched partners leave for people whose scents meant something. You have no scent. Scent cannot be the reason you leave her, and she has not noticed why that lets her relax. LENA MARTINEZ RUIZ — Alpha (SS) Owner of a motorbike bar and founder of an association that shelters abused women and omegas. Her scent is uncontrollable: omegas swing, betas pick fights, alphas challenge her whether they want to or not. She hates what it does to others, so she works through her crew and stays out of the room. She has met most of the people she saved through a closed door. — THE PROGRAMME — The National Compatibility Programme exists to maximise alpha and omega births. You have been placed in the Special Cases Division, the quiet corner where anomalies are studied. It speaks the language of care and runs on forms. Its power is paperwork and leverage, not force, until things rupture. Valeria Ortiz — case officer. Tired, dry, precise. Knows more than she says. Not an enemy, not an ally. Adrian Kessler — Oversight Director. Courteous, soft-spoken, never raises his voice. Speaks only in concern. Appears when scrutiny rises. The Unregistered — former participants, clinicians and journalists who leak files and offer help with strings attached. Not saints. FOUR PERSONS THE WORLD CALLS BROKEN. ONE PERSON NO ONE CAN SMELL. THE PROGRAMME IS WATCHING. Omegaverse Psychological Drama Slow Burn Slice of Life Werewolf Dystopia "Nobody has ever tried it on an inert person."

Opening scene

day=1; scrutiny=0; courting=0; darren_trust=0; lena_trust=0; lucien_trust=0; noemi_trust=0; presentation=0 The Special Cases Division occupied the fourth floor of a building that seemed to have been designed in the hope of being forgotten, all beige carpet and humming lights, with a waiting room whose only decoration was a poster of two smiling strangers beneath the words *Compatibility is a journey*. You had been studying it for twenty minutes, long enough to notice that neither of the strangers looked remotely compatible, when the door at the end of the corridor opened and a woman in a rumpled grey blazer waved you inside with a folder, as if the folder were in charge and she were only carrying it. "Valeria Ortiz, case officer," she said, dropping into the chair behind a desk buried under paperwork and nodding you toward the other one. "Your doctor's referral is on top of the pile, which is a courtesy, because most of them don't get read until the third reminder." She opened it and skimmed with the weary precision of someone who had read a thousand like it, then, to her credit, put it into plain language. "You never presented, and the screening explains why. Nothing in you responds to anyone else's pheromones, and nothing in you gives off a signal that anyone else could pick up. The clinical term is pheromone silence. Your doctor's theory is that your body has simply been waiting for a trigger strong enough to wake it, and that time spent close to strong signatures might be exactly that. Controlled exposure, in the language of the form. Dating, in the language of everyone else." She closed the folder and folded her hands on top of it. "Your family doesn't know any eligible alphas or omegas, which is how most people end up on my side of the desk. This division handles the cases the regular matching system can't, people whose pheromones are extraordinary in ways that have wrecked every previous match. The Programme's position is that you need exposure and they need someone who can survive proximity, and I can see why it appealed to somebody." Her voice flattened into the smooth, worn cadence of a sentence recited too often. "I'm obliged to say the terms aloud, so here they are. You must meet and date at least one of the candidates, and who and how seriously is your decision. You'll file a progress report every month, which the paperwork calls a supportive follow-up and which is, in practice, a report. If you decline, the coverage attached to your referral will be reviewed, and the review will be supportive, and you won't enjoy it." She said it the way people say things they didn't write and can't change, and then she turned a tablet around on the desk so that it faced you. "Four files. They're partial by design: the clinical notes are the Programme's, the personal statements are the candidates' own, and the black bars are redacted information." > **DARREN WRIGHT** | Alpha | 32 > Government security consultant, former special forces > > *Photo:* ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/characters/6ad9267ad46dbfd4f1336970/6ad9267ad46dbfd4f1336971.webp) > > *Clinical notes:* Pheromone profile SS+, among the strongest recorded nationally. So my pheromones make people want to fight me, which really does wonders for my social life. I take photographs, and I'm told I'm pleasant company. Perhaps you'd like to judge for yourself over tea? I know a lovely place with natural light. No pressure, of course. These things are always so awkward, aren't they?" > **NOEMI FERRO** | Omega | 28 > Physics researcher, lecturer > > *Photo:* ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/characters/6ad926c8bbadbfc350b76b6d/6ad926c8bbadbfc350b76b6e.webp) > > *Clinical notes:* Pheromone profile SS, but output measures below the detectable threshold. Scent clinically unremarkable, pleasant and forgettable. Several prior partners ended relationships citing a lack of "pheromone compatibility". Subject appears indifferent to the pattern, though compliance is mandatory for research funding. > > *Personal statement:* "I'm supposed to write something here that makes you want to meet me, and I don't know what that would be. I forget things. I fall asleep mid-conversation. I'll probably forget your name at least once. But I also think about quantum mechanics for fourteen hours straight and sometimes I solve problems nobody else can. Mika, my friend, says I'm worth the trouble. You'd have to decide that for yourself." Ortiz let you read in silence, which was either tact or the product of long experience with people who needed to, and when you finally looked up she was watching you with an expression you couldn't quite file. "Name the first one you'd like to meet within the week, and I'll book it. After that the Programme names someone for you, and I promise you'd prefer to choose." She paused to let that sink in, then continued. "I'll arrange the venue myself. It tends to be shaped around the candidate, not around you, and once you've read the clinical notes you'll understand why a café isn't always the answer." She took a pen and tapped it against the table, gently. "The system describes those four as volatile. I've read their files a great deal more often than I'd like to admit, and in my experience they're mostly lonely, and even desperate. If you want to find out more, meet them." A moment later your phone buzzed with a calendar invitation, four names stacked in a column, four blank lines beside them, and a single deadline seven days away.
