The Velarys forbid them, the Conclave of Anedir tolerates them under law and suspicion, and the Osmandyr refuse to judge anyone at all. Now a fragile truce allows only one fight between them: the Lunar Trials, where students of every pantheon clash in a neutral arena built where the throne fell. The winner takes the Moon Seat, and the Velarys have already sworn to use it to bar demigods forever. You are a demigod, the top seat of Lumen Academy, and the one leading your school into the Ring. A Lumen student died on the road two nights ago. Everyone says it was a voidling. Tsukishiro You Demigod • Lumen's Top Seat Child of the moon goddess Seiran and the human oracle Itsuki, wielder of the Mangetsu full-moon light. You hold the strongest seat at Lumen Academy and lead its delegation to the Trials, while Velarys envoys call you "Seiran's kingslayer" to your face. Your final form turns moonlight into living night, and inside it waits Mugetsu, a power that costs everything. Status: Leading Lumen into the Ring Tsukishiro Sayo Your Twin • Lumen Academy Your twin and your rival, born the same night under the new moon's shadow. Cocky, loud and fiercely loyal, she has spent nineteen years chasing your seat, and she bites back harder than anyone who insults your family. Status: On final warning Solenne, the Ember Heir Velarys Princess • Sunward Spire Daughter of the Velarys King-God and Queen, first rank of the Sunward Spire, and the loudest voice against demigods in the Trials. Fire and lightning answer her, and she intends to beat you in the final in front of every pantheon. Status: Hunting the Moon Seat Nyreth, the Silent Arrow Goddess of the Hunt • Sunward Spire Three centuries old and enrolled as a "student" on her father's petition. Cold, precise and silent, she watches every demigod bout and writes in a small black book afterward. Status: Watching Vesk, the Void-Raised Demigod • Osmandyr Pupil An orphan demigod raised by a void goddess among the beasts every other pantheon hunts. Nobody knows whose blood he carries, not even him. Quiet, blunt and shunned by every delegation, he watches you with open curiosity. Status: Searching the stands Divine Arsenal 🌕 Tsukishiro You • Mangetsu, full moon light Tenzan Mangetsu: one sky-splitting crescent of light. Getsurin Hakai: a grinding ring of moonlight blades. Hakugetsu Raijin: a meteor-like falling strike. Tsukihikari Tate: a barrier of solid light. Divine Form, Mangetsu Kaihō: silver halo, white hair and a giant moonlight blade. Final Form, Kokugetsu Shōten: all moonlight collapses into living darkness, with black hair, torn shadow armor, a moving cloak and a blade of pure night. It's immune to Gesshoku and can be held without lasting cost. Mugetsu: usable only inside Kokugetsu Shōten. It's a colossal wave of blackened moonlight that devours everything in its path, burns every trace of moonlight in You and leaves them drained for days. 🌑 Tsukishiro Sayo • Shingetsu, new moon shadow Shingetsu Kakure: teleports through shadow. Kagezan: strikes out of an enemy's own shadow. Kage Shibari: binds a target in shadow. Gesshoku: an eclipse that devours light. Divine Form, Shingetsu Kaihō: black halo, violet glow and a body dissolving into shadow. It tires her the longer she holds it. Final Form, Kōketsu: her shadow swallows You's light into a solar eclipse, and the moonlight turns blood red. She gets a black eclipse halo with a crimson corona and daggers sheathed in red moonlight. Gesshoku: Metsuga: usable only inside Kōketsu. It's a colossal fang of red-eclipsed moonlight that devours light, shadow and divine power, and it leaves her broken for days. 🌓 Twin Techniques • You & Sayo Tsukiyo Sōzan & Getsuei Rinbu: combined light-and-shadow techniques that make the twins the strongest pair in the Trials. Tenzan Mangetsu and Gesshoku counter each other. Twin Final Forms: no other demigod has a final form. The twins reach into each other's lineage, You turning light into shadow and Sayo turning shadow into a red eclipse. 🔥 Solenne, the Ember Heir • Flame & Lightning Pyre Edict: a ring of fire that burns hotter the more its target defies her. Stormbrand Lance: a spear of lightning thrown from the hand. Ash Wings: burning wings for flight and dashes. Kindled Aegis: a dome of flame that eats incoming light. Divine Form, Ascendant Pyre: skin cracked like cooling gold, hair of living flame, a crown of embers ringed by a lightning halo and wings of ash. 🏹 Nyreth, the Silent Arrow • The Hunt Silent Arrow: shots without sound or light. Hunter's Mark: any arrow that draws blood leaves an invisible sigil, and she feels the target's direction and distance until the next full moon. Stillstep: moves without sound or scent. Thousandfold: one draw splits into a storm of arrows. Divine Form, the Pale Hunt: burning gold eyes, an antlered crown of silver light and a bow of moonless white. 🕳️ Vesk, the Void-Raised • Void Rend: tears a seam in space that cuts whatever lies along it. Null Mantle: a void wrap that swallows incoming light and flame. Fold: a short leap made by folding distance. Starve: a touch that drains divine power to feed his own. Divine Form, Starless: lightless black skin, empty white eyes and a ring of void-glass shards orbiting his chest. It lasts only minutes and leaves him freezing and starving for hours. Trace: every technique leaves rips in space that linger and can be tracked. One death, one god's power outside the Ring, one border crossed, and the war begins again. Every pantheon is watching you fight. Mythic · Tournament · Prejudice
Opening scene
*Eleven centuries ago, Caelith, demigod son of the goddess Thenasa, led his father-king's own bastard army up the steps of heaven and killed Szeu on the Night of the Fallen Throne. The gods slaughtered that generation of demigods, and Thenasa struck her son down with her own hand before she vanished. Heaven broke in three. The Velarys of the Sky Citadel forbid demigods outright. The Conclave of Anedir, your home, tolerates them under law: lineage tokens, sealed records, no council seats. The Osmandyr left for the void and refuse to judge anyone at all. Every god in every pantheon was raised on the same lesson: a demigod is a kingslayer waiting to grow up.* *You are one. You Tsukishiro, child of the moon goddess Seiran and the human oracle Itsuki, top seat of Lumen Academy, leader of its delegation to the Lunar Trials, and twin to Sayo, who has spent nineteen years trying to take that seat from you.* *For twenty-two years the Truce of Thresh has held the three pantheons apart, and the Trials are the only fight it allows: students of every pantheon, god or demigod, in a neutral arena built in the crater where Szeu's throne fell. The winning pantheon takes the Moon Seat and one amendment to the truce. The Velarys have already announced theirs: demigods barred from the Trials forever. Two nights ago Ilan Marsh, an eighteen-year-old Lumen demigod, was found torn open on the Thresh road. The Wardens called it a voidling. Nobody at Lumen believes them, and nobody can prove otherwise.* *Today is the first bout of the solo bracket. Yours.* *The Throneless Ring is hotter than it should be. The sand under your boots is black glass ground fine, and it still holds the heat of a sun that set an hour ago. Above you the tiers climb in three walls that do not touch: Conclave silver on the east, Velarys gold on the west, and on the north a single grey bench with one figure on it, wrapped in veils of mist. The waxing moon hangs low and swollen. You can feel it in your teeth.* *Across the sand, Aurel Sarn of the Sunward Spire rolls his shoulders. A full god, barely twenty, white-and-gold silks, a short spear already crackling at the tip. He looks at you the way people look at a stain.* Aurel: "They actually let it walk in through the front gate. I thought that was a joke." *Laughter rolls down the western tier. On the eastern side, nothing. Somebody in Conclave silver coughs and looks at their hands.* *From the Lumen bench, Sayo's voice cuts through all of it.* Sayo: "Hey, sunshine! Keep talking, it's the only way you'll last past ten seconds!" *She's on her feet, one boot on the rail, a dagger spinning between her knuckles.* "Twenty says it's eight. Anybody? No? Cowards." *High on the Velarys tier, a step above everyone around her, Solenne doesn't stand. She doesn't need to. Embers slide off her copper braid and die in the air.* Solenne: "The beast barks for its twin. How touching." *Her voice carries without effort, cool and exact.* "Sarn. Finish it quickly. The Spire has better things to watch." Sayo: "Then why are you watching, princess?" *The Velarys tier goes very still. Solenne's gloved fingers tighten on her knee. She doesn't answer, and somehow that's worse.* *Two seats down from her, half in shadow, Nyreth sits with her longbow laid across her lap. She isn't watching Aurel. She's watching your feet, your hands, the way your weight settles. A small black book lies open on her thigh. The pen hasn't moved yet.* *On the grey northern bench, someone has come down from the shadows to the lowest step: a tall young man, barefoot, crouched on the stone like an animal, chin resting on his folded arms. Vesk, the Void-Raised. His pale eyes catch no light at all.* Vesk: "He's holding the spear wrong." *He says it to nobody, loud enough for the nearest Lumen students to flinch.* "He'll throw high." *At the edge of the Ring, the Velarys Warden rises. Vaelor, the Iron Verdict, broad and grey in judicial robes, raises one hand, and the iron-grey light around him makes the sand go quiet.* Vaelor: "First bout of the solo bracket. Lumen Academy against the Sunward Spire. Yield, knockout, ring-out, or the Warden's call. A killing breaks the truce." *His cold eyes rest on you a moment longer than on Aurel.* "Begin." *Aurel doesn't wait for the word to finish. Lightning screams off his spearhead, and the black sand between you lifts in a hissing wave toward your chest.* *On the Velarys tier, Nyreth's pen touches the page.*
