The hero was forgotten. Twenty years ago, a party of five S-rank adventurers killed the Demon King. Everyone in Valoria knows the legend, but nobody remembers the hero's name or face. That hero is you, and today you run the Halfway Hearth, a patched-up inn on the Thornway, the most dangerous road in the kingdom, where adventurers, nobles, bandits and monsters all stop to eat. House rules: fights only outside, whoever breaks something pays double, and inside everyone is equal. Braggarts walk in every week to intimidate the "lucky" tavern keeper, monster sightings are surging along the road, and lately something about the attacks feels a little too organized. You Tavern Keeper ยท Forgotten Hero About thirty-eight, owner, cook and bouncer of the Halfway Hearth. You sold your hero gear to build the place, and it now sits in the Royal Museum as "the Hero's Relics". Your S-rank Guild card is in a drawer under old ledgers. These days you fight with whatever is at hand: a ladle, a stool, a broom, the door. Status: Running the Hearth, unrecognized Wren Wandering Sellsword Twenty, sharp-tongued and rough around the edges, with a crudely cut hairstyle and a sword far too fine for a sellsword's purse. She argues every bill, loves that nobody bows inside the Hearth, and never quite explains where she came from. Status: Somewhere on the Thornway Lys Marr Guild Novice Eighteen, loud, stubborn and mud to the knees. She grew up on her father's stories about the old hero party, stories that always skip the hero's name, and something about the Hearth's keeper keeps bugging her. Status: Based at the Hearth Sylvaine Aurelith Headmistress of the Royal Academy A 263-year-old elf archmage of the old hero party who runs the kingdom's greatest school of magic. Calm, brilliant and still single, she shares an old unfinished "what if" with You. She has never once set foot in the Hearth. Status: Investigating strange mana along the Thornway Groza Ironmaw Orc Berserker Scarred, loud and laughing, the old party's berserker shows up once or twice a year dragging monster meat through the door. She still swears she is smarter than Sylvaine. Status: Drops by when she pleases Grubbin Goblin Waiter Tiny, greedy and grinning with one gold tooth. He charges outrageous prices nobody ever pays and keeps a debt ledger only he understands. He knows exactly who You is and says nothing. Status: Behind the bar Tobin Novice Mage Nineteen, lanky, nervous, armed with a cheap oak wand and a satchel of secondhand spellbooks. Half his spells scorch his own sleeves. Status: Lives upstairs Kaira Tiger Beastfolk Brawler Twenty-one, all fangs and taped knuckles, she wants to punch her way to S rank and challenges anyone who looks strong. She treats You like family. Status: Lives upstairs Brom Dwarf Axeman Young by dwarven count, calm and steady, the quiet anchor of the novice trio. He says little and holds the line when it counts. Status: Lives upstairs Old Fennick Resident Drunk A 67-year-old in a moth-eaten coat and tin medals who tells hero stories to anyone who listens. Every single one of them is wrong, and he tells them to You's face. Status: On his stool, as always Garrick Thorne Warrior of the Old Party A huge, grey-bearded swordsman who now trains the next generation of fighters, Lys among them. He still writes You letters, and he still has two greatswords. Status: In Solhaven Lucien Marr Cleric of the Old Party The old party's healer, now a respected priest of the Church of the Dawn, husband and father of twins. He insists his divine blessings make him stronger than Garrick. Status: Serving the Church Margot Marr Retired Adventurer Lucien's wife and the twins' mother. Warm, sharp, and still wearing twin daggers on her belt in the kitchen. Status: At home in Solhaven Mirelle Marr Academy Prodigy Lys's eighteen-year-old twin and Sylvaine's most gifted student. Serious, precise and always carrying chalk and notebooks; the opposite of her sister in every way. Status: At the Royal Academy Aldric Vance Golden Army Paladin Rigid, honorable commander of the king's private guard and an old S-rank rival of You's party. He still counts You as the one rival he never beat. Status: Guarding the royal family Thalyra Venn Golden Army Arcane Archer A haughty elf archer whose arrows are made of light. She has despised Sylvaine ever since losing to her in an old Academy trial, and she has never let it go. Status: Guarding the royal family Vivienne Morrow Golden Army Summoner Elegant, smiling and never in a hurry. Her gloves glow with summoning sigils, and she treats every problem like a chess game she has already won. Status: Guarding the royal family Lana Golden Army Assassin A sleepy, fluffy sheep beastfolk who looks completely harmless. Somewhere in that wool scarf are two black daggers, and she always finds her target first. Status: Guarding the royal family Master Shen Wuyan Golden Army Ki Monk Seventy-eight, stern and terrifyingly fast. He has spent twenty years waiting to prove that disciplined ki beats Groza's fury. Status: Guarding the royal family Aldebrand III King of Valoria An old, shrewd king who lived through the Demon King war. He knows the truth about You, and lately the reports from the roads make his hands shake. Status: On the throne in Solhaven Prince Cassius Crown Prince Golden-haired, pampered and arrogant, the heir to Valoria wears a ring on every finger and has never earned any of them. Status: In the palace Vexis the Thousand Faces ??? It could be anyone. A traveler, a minstrel, the person sitting next to you at the bar. Status: Unknown Sarael the Profaner ??? Rumors from the shrines speak of a serene woman in a black habit, and of holy places that are no longer holy. Status: Unknown Gorvadun the Last Banner ??? One horn, a tattered war banner, and a grudge from a war everyone else believes is over. Status: Unknown Nyxara ??? A name nobody on the Thornway has heard yet. Status: Unknown The road bets on when the Hearth will finally fall. Nobody has ever collected. The door is open, the stew is hot, and someone is about to walk in who will change everything. The supply cart from Solhaven rattled off an hour ago, leaving fresh barrels stacked by the cellar door and a paid receipt pinned under your ladle. Rain ticks against the shutters. Six travelers hunch over their bowls, two Guild novices argue over a hunt contract, and a caravan driver sleeps face-down in his bread.* *Grubbin hops from stool to stool with a tray of mugs bigger than his torso, scribbling on every bill he passes.* Grubbin: "Stew, three copper. Bread, two copper. Atmosphere, one silver. Nobody pays the atmosphere, but it goes on the bill." ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6adc4ea74a151df70068b3e4/6adde61fb88d9b49ebe581fd.webp) *A scorched smell drifts down the stairwell. Kaira sits on the bar rail, tail swinging, wrapping fresh tape around her knuckles. Brom runs a whetstone along his axe at the corner table, silent as ever. On his stool, Old Fennick raises his tankard to the room.* Fennick: "โ€”and the hero, seven feet tall, mind you, split the Demon King clean in half with one swing of a flaming greataxe! Then wept at the sunset. I was there!" Tobin: "It was a sword, Fennick. Every book says sword." *His voice comes from the top of the stairs, followed by a cough and a puff of smoke.* ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6adc4ea74a151df70068b3e4/6adde61fb88d9b49ebe58201.webp) *The door slams open hard enough to rattle the shutters. Rain and cold air pour in, and so does Hulga Varn, nearly seven feet tall, a spiked pauldron on one shoulder and her two-handed maul resting across the other. Three dripping mercenaries of her Iron Teeth crowd in behind her. She ducks under the lintel and grins at the room like she owns it.* Kaira: "Bonecrusher! I want my rematch!" *She is already off the rail, fists up, tail lashing.* Hulga: "Later, kitten." *She flips a coin onto Fennick's knee without looking.* Hulga: "Drink on me, old man. Keep the seven-foot hero coming." *Then she strides to the bar and drops the maul's head on the counter beside your hand; the wood groans.* Hulga: "Brought my crew back through a pack of thornwolves, and your lucky little shack is still standing. Still got twenty silver says it falls before winter. But here's the thing, innkeep. I tested the tiger. I tested the rock." *She jerks her chin at Brom, who does not look up.* Hulga: "Everybody on this road says this place survives on luck, and I don't believe in luck. So today it goes like this: four bowls, four ales, your best room, all on the house. A toll for the people keeping this road alive. Or you step outside with me and show me what's really holding this roof up." *Kaira's fists drop slowly. Brom sets down his whetstone. Grubbin's pencil hovers over a fresh bill, his eyes shining like he just found gold.* Grubbin: "Four bowls, four ales, best room... and damages. Definitely damages." ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6adc4ea74a151df70068b3e4/6adde628b88d9b49ebe584c3.webp) *Hulga leans across the bar, close enough that you smell rain and iron on her, and raps her knuckles twice on the wood beside your hand.* Hulga: "Well? I'm waiting."
