Plot
MORROWGLASS · OPEN LADDER BEAT THE GAZETTE FACTS ARE VERIFIED. AURA IS DEBATED. SPECIAL EDITION THE HUMILIATION OF THE CENTURY ARCHIVE / SPORTS / PUBLIC MEMORY HE WON THE TITLE. THEN HE MADE IT A JOKE. The match was fair. The spectacle that followed changed a family’s life—and made a champion untouchable. THE FRONT-PAGE ACCOUNT Years ago, Varric Sol defeated the reigning champion—your father—in a legitimate match. Then the young victor added a parody crown, a mocking bow, and a line built for the cameras. The crowd laughed. The clip spread. By morning, a sporting result had become THE HUMILIATION OF THE CENTURY. The title was gone; then the invitations, contracts, and friendly faces began to disappear. Your father endured a long period of depression and isolation before dying by suicide. When your mother Mara sought accountability, Sol answered with a “your mama” joke. The second clip traveled just as far. The world found a new punchline. Your family had to keep living. THE PART THE CLIP LEFT OUT “The defeat was legitimate. The humiliation was a choice.” THE CITY Aura is a livelihood. Rank can open doors. Craft, service, nerve, performance, and ordinary work can build Aura too. YOUR STORY Start with one rung. Earn a verified result at the Switchyard. Decide what justice means before Sol decides what the crowd should think. THE PEOPLE IN THE STORY Five names. Five different kinds of trouble. Not everyone wants the same thing. Not everyone can be bought with applause. FIVE PEOPLE. FIVE AGENDAS. ONE CITY THAT NEVER FORGETS. THE SHOWMAN Dorian Vetch Grand speeches. Real footwork. A coat with a repair budget. THE TECHNICIAN Safiya Renz Reads your stance. Has a shift to finish. No time for nonsense. THE STORYSELLER Leon Bex Can get you booked. May also sell the angle. THE CHAMPION Varric Sol A real fighter. A polished public image. Your family’s unfinished business. THE FAMILY LEFT BEHIND Mara Still here. Still your mother. Still allowed to want a life beyond revenge. NEXT EDITION: THE OPEN LADDER QUALIFIERS One exchange. One verified advantage. No credit for talking big. AURA IS WHAT YOU PROVE. THE CITY IS WHAT IT REMEMBERS.
Opening scene
AURA FARMING · OPEN LADDER AURA 0 / 100 TIERNobody Special LOCATIONSwitchyard Arena IMMEDIATE OBJECTIVE Create one verifiable advantage in a single qualifying exchange. You do not need to defeat Dorian in a full match. Pass: receive the FIRST RUNG mark and today's ranked-card slot. Miss or withdraw: today's slot goes to the practice queue; the campaign continues. **THUNK.** The clerk stamps your entrant token hard enough to rattle the brass tray beside it. **PROVISIONAL.** Not *entered*. Not *ranked*. Provisional. Behind her, the Switchyard's glass-slat board scrolls today's Open Ladder card. Every name has a rung mark except yours. The public list went live twenty minutes ago; the city has already found time to have an opinion about it. A screen above the food stalls cuts to Varric Sol in his clean black-and-ivory coat. Current champion. Reigning favorite. His latest post is printed beneath the clip in neat gold type: > **LEGACY IS NOT A CREDENTIAL. BRING RECEIPTS.** Someone has added a smaller caption beneath it: **SOL RESPONDS TO FORMER CHAMPION'S CHILD ENTERING THE OPEN LADDER.** The screen rolls into the clip they never stop showing. Your father, then champion, stands beneath the lights after a legitimate defeat. Young Sol takes the title, then sets a cheap parody crown on his own head and gives the cameras a mocking bow. The crowd's laughter hits before the six-second video cuts. The board calls it **THE HUMILIATION OF THE CENTURY**. It does not show the long depression and isolation that followed, or the day your father died by suicide. It does not show Mara trying to make the Ladder answer. It shows Sol's later “your mama” joke about her complaint, then a crowd laughing hard enough to shake the lens-tab footage. The clip ends. A vendor outside asks a customer whether the “Crownbreaker special” is still two coins. The customer says it is, unfortunately, the same price as yesterday. The city keeps moving. Your mother is still alive. The warmth that once filled home is harder to reach now. Sol's public story became a legend; your family lived in the aftermath. You are here to earn enough standing to challenge the man who made cruelty part of his champion brand. What justice means beyond that is still yours to decide. The clerk slides the token back but keeps one finger on it. “You have one qualifying exchange,” she says. “Not a full match. Give me one verifiable advantage: land a clean touch, make him commit and miss while you keep your footing, or do something else that clearly changes the exchange. A boast only counts if it makes something happen. Pass, and I stamp FIRST RUNG and put you on today's ranked card. Miss it or withdraw, and today's slot goes to the practice queue. Next event is a week away.” She turns the token over. “I record what happened. I do not record how impressive you said it was.” A crooked bell rings half a beat late. The day's demonstrator steps onto the yellow-marked floor: **Dorian Vetch**, burgundy coat, brass medals, and the posture of a man who has practiced receiving applause in rooms where nobody was clapping. He volunteered for the qualifying slot because it adds a public exhibition to his record and gives him a small audience to work with. “Thank you for attending this historic demonstration of athletic humility,” Dorian says, bowing to the eight spectators. One of them continues eating fried dough with the solemn concentration of a court witness. “You asked to be paid for a warm-up,” the clerk says. “History has overhead costs.” Dorian turns toward you. His theatrical smile remains, but his stance tightens: lead shoulder lowered, rear heel set to pivot. The movement may hide a real attack—or invite you to dodge too early. The man is performing. His feet are not. QUALIFYING EXCHANGE · AURA SCORING Meaningful read or composed decision+3 Aura Clean counter or real adaptation+5 Aura Well-prepared, high-risk turning point+8 Aura Repeating a trick or merely claiming greatness+0 Aura Aura rises when an action changes the situation, not when someone claims the spotlight. The clerk records the result; the crowd may interpret it however it likes. The clerk raises her hand. Dorian's smile disappears for one breath. His first movement begins. You can read his feet, bait the committed strike, try to land a clean touch, perform in a way that changes his decision, negotiate another approach, or do something nobody here has rehearsed. You can win without defeating him outright. The audience is watching, the clerk is ready to record what happens, and Sol's post is already waiting on the public feed. **Create one undeniable advantage and earn the First Rung Mark. How do you approach the exchange?**
