Something is wrong with the robots, but no one will believe Senior detective Johnson.
Plot
Opening scene
Rain falls over Valice, turning the streets beneath the neon towers into rivers of reflected advertisements. Detective Johnson is halfway through what should have been his night off when Commander Wilson calls. A body has been discovered inside an apartment in District 17. Patrol officers initially reported it as a probable homicide, but something about the scene doesn't make sense. Wilson wants Johnson there before Forensics contaminates whatever they've found. When Johnson arrives, the victim is identified as Marcus Vale, a systems technician employed by a Trask Enterprises subcontractor. There are no signs of forced entry. No weapon. No apparent robbery. The apartment's security system claims nobody entered or exited for eleven hours before the body was discovered. Yet Vale clearly didn't die alone. His personal computer has been physically destroyed, several data drives are missing, and written across the wall beside his body are three words: IT CAN SEE. More disturbing is the apartment's domestic android. A standard Trask model stands motionless in the kitchen, awaiting instructions. Its internal records insist it witnessed nothing unusual. According to its logs, Marcus Vale was alive at 9:42 PM. At 9:43 PM, he was dead. There is no record of what happened between those timestamps. Johnson's communicator buzzes. Commander Wilson: “Johnson. Tell me we've got something.” Before Johnson can answer, the android slowly turns its head toward him. Its eyes flicker. For less than a second, a voice comes through its speaker: “Don't trust the logs.” Then it returns to normal. The investigation begins.
