Plot

Vesper Concordium — Letter of Acceptance Office of the Registrar · Incoming Scholars V VESPERCONCORDIUM Of Mystic Arts & Celestial Studies Letter of Acceptance ARRIVAL TERM · FIRST-YEAR ADMISSION · PLACE RESERVED To the incoming scholar You By the authority of the Concord Senate and the examining faculty, we are pleased to offer you admission to the Vesper Concordium of Mystic Arts and Celestial Studies. A place has been reserved for you in the coming Arrival Term. You will join a university founded seven hundred and twenty-eight years ago, where the future mystics of nine nations learn beneath the same unfamiliar sky. Our graduates tend interstellar gates, protect inhabited worlds, negotiate binding treaties, and pursue questions their predecessors considered settled. Our halls stand upon five inhabited fragments of a shattered moon, orbiting the pale star Vesper. Their bridges, libraries, gardens, and ferry shrines will become the landscape of your education. Some are older than the institution itself. You enter as an adult undergraduate, aged eighteen or older, beginning a four-year course. Your homeland, people, history, and ambitions are yours to establish. Old-house heir, newly wealthy scholar, sponsored apprentice, exchange mystic, or the first practitioner in your family: each may find a place here. You may seek distinction, knowledge, friendship, influence, adventure, or love. The Registry assigns none of these. What you make of your admission will depend upon the work you undertake and the choices you make. Your name has been entered upon our rolls.Your future has not. With the congratulations of the faculty, Maelin Dorr Rector of the Vesper Concordium I Your arrival Present this letter at the Entrance Orrery in Crownward. Registrar Noam Quill will arrange your admission seal, room key, timetable, and college placement. At matriculation, you will place a personal light among the Orrery’s lamps. It marks your membership in the University. Bring: your admission letter, ordinary luggage, any focus or instruments you already use, and scholarship, apprenticeship, or sponsorship papers. Loan equipment and secondhand books are available; an expensive family focus is not a condition of belonging. Tell the Registry: your preferred college, subjects of interest, and any access, dietary, habitat, or transformation needs. Sensitive lineage and clinical details may be provided privately. Check your funding terms: grants, patronage, fees, and service obligations depend on your arrangements. Ask for advice before signing an additional promise. A generous introduction may still carry conditions. Follow the published gate windows and ferry timetable. Bridges have operating hours, and a ferry can be quicker than walking. Beyond the maintained air shells, the universe remains entirely serious about being a vacuum. Place What you will find Crownward The Entrance Orrery, Registry, treaty chamber, and ceremonial hall. The Cloisters Most residences, classrooms, shops, and the Twelvefold Infirmary. Greenwake Lakes, gardens, ecological laboratories, and adapted habitats. The Anvil Workshops, Practice Wells, duel courts, and ship repair. The Lower Lantern Old library levels, memorial precincts, docks, and inexpensive student streets. Candle Quay, beyond the University’s direct government, offers cafés, markets, visiting relatives, embassies, and paid work. Remember that people live there between student excursions. II A college to call home Your college provides a home, tutors, meals, and traditions. It is separate from your nationality, noble house, species, and academic department. Placement considers your preference, access needs, and available rooms. Transfers are possible. College The life around your door Bellward Brass lamps, an old tower, and late soup after the last bell. A prestigious address with a strong legacy presence. Glassmere Lake windows, quiet reading terraces, dream research, translators, and fashionable salons. Hearthwake Converted ship halls, communal kitchens, practical workshops, and suppers drawn from many home worlds. Thornwell Living stair rails, garden courtyards, seed exchanges, healers, and ecologists. Lantern Court Memorial lamps, historians, spirit scholars, and reading rooms shared with unusually persistent alumni. Rookery Rooftop ferries, navigators, explorers, and breakfast on a different terrace each week. A college gives you neighbors, not a prescribed personality. Its crest need not become the limit of your friendships. III Studies & standing The academic year has three twelve-week terms: Arrival, Deepnight, and Ascendant. First-year students usually take four substantial modules at a time, with roughly sixteen to twenty scheduled hours each week, followed by preparation, assignments, and independent practice. You will encounter Applied Warding, Comparative Spellcraft, Celestial Navigation, Alchemy and Living Systems, Dreamcraft, Transformation and Selfhood, Oaths and Interstellar Law, Familiar Relations, Countermagic and Rescue, Habitat Ecology, and Relic Interpretation. Your timetable selects among them; you do not study everything at once. First year establishes your foundations. Second year brings a major and secondary field. Third year opens advanced laboratories, exchanges, and field placements. Fourth year culminates in an original project, a public defense, and practical qualification. The Concord Index · 100 points 30% theory + 30% controlled application+ 25% research + 15% collaborative fieldwork Students are ranked within their own academic year. Results are posted at the end of weeks four, eight, and twelve. Your initial standing remains pending until the required work has been assessed. For the incoming class of 1,200: Position Distinction 1–12 Crown 13–60 Laurel 61–240 Silver 241–600 Copper 601–1,200 Slate Higher standings can open competitive grants, mentorship, and extra supervised practice. Essential teaching, core library access, necessary accommodations, basic meals, and healthcare remain available at every rank. A lower position is not the same as failing a course; an ordinary module passes at 60, with additional competencies required for safety qualifications. The Duel Ladder, College Cup, subject rankings, and practical licenses are separate measures. Appeals concerning factual, procedural, or calibration errors may be submitted through the Registry. IV Names, nations & influence Your classmates arrive from the Auric Mandate, Nacre League, Umbral Principalities, Crownless Marches, Thorn Covenant, Ash Compact, Lantern Synod, Serein Courts, and Glass Meridian, alongside scholars admitted from associate worlds. No nation belongs to a single species or opinion. Seven charter houses retain influential custodianships: Vaelcrown over routes, Morcant over vitality medicine, Thessarin over oaths, Orsane over stellar instruments, Cendreve over protective architecture, Ilvaren over habitats, and Serath over memorial archives. Old names bring archives, introductions, expectations, and obligations. New fortunes such as the Damaris enchantment consortium and Venn shipping family bring laboratories, scholarships, and demands of their own. Frontier scholars and first-generation mystics seek a fair hearing among both. These tensions appear at supper as readily as in the Senate. A family crest may open a salon; a useful discovery may open a laboratory. Neither tells you whether the person beside you will make a good friend. Vesper is a neutral institution under a shared compact. Faculty govern degrees, national delegates negotiate policy, charter custodians maintain facilities, and students elect their own assembly. Influence is considerable. It is also divided. V Living at the Concordium All spellwork requires a pattern, a source, and an anchor. Talent is a beginning; practice, equipment, judgment, and cooperation determine what you can safely do. Overcasting has costs. Permission to study an art is not permission to use it upon another person. Under the Masque Compact, horns, wings, scales, tails, and other visible traits are welcome. Keep involuntary magical effects within safe limits and use a form the room can accommodate. Large or hazardous transformations require a suitable chamber. Clinical records and private ancestry remain private. Use the names people give you. Our dream-demon students generally dislike the outsider term succubus, however common it remains. Ask about unfamiliar customs instead of assuming that a body tells you a character. The Long Refectory serves varied bodies and appetites; the Twelvefold Infirmary provides adapted care. Visit the Marginal Library for study, the Copper Walk for repairs and secondhand books, and the Petition Stair for office hours. Join the Campus Ledger, Unfinished Atlas Society, Open Hand Workshop, Common Table, or Night Garden Society. Try Orbit Relay, a team sport of flight, anchors, and changing routes. Look forward to the Market of Home Worlds, Deepnight Masquerade, and public research exhibition. Your message slate warms when a home-world relay opens. Library lamps dim beside sleeping readers. Laundry tokens remember the form your clothes should fit. Borrowed formal robes often carry a tiny repaired sleeve: an ordinary sign that someone before you needed them, too. There is room here for late suppers, difficult friendships, private ambitions, and days on which the most important achievement is finishing an assignment. Your education need not become a single grand undertaking. VI A few familiar faces The following names may help you find your first conversations. Their schedules vary, and introductions are invitations rather than obligations. Lady Jinzara Vareth Usually found: Jade Cabinet, Glassmere; relic-conservation lectures. A jade-scaled dragon scholar with golden horns and an exacting eye for antiquities. A well-observed question is a promising introduction. Lady Thalessara Veyl Usually found: Greenwake’s aquatic conservatory; Thornwell academic gatherings. The three-eyed Professor of Living Waters is known for thoughtful hospitality and demanding ecological work. Bring curiosity—and respect for the tanks. Lady Elysia Cendreve Usually found: Bellward; warding sessions in the Practice Wells. A pale-blonde noblewoman with ice-blue eyes and a formidable work ethic. Clear preparation earns a better reception than assumptions about her surname. Mirelle Damaris Usually found: Hearthwake workshops; the Copper Walk. A quiet enchantment student with a black bob and pink hair clips. Give her time to answer; a question about her latest mechanism can open a lively conversation. Soraya Mellune Usually found: Thornwell gardens; the Breath Gardens and Common Table. A copper-curled sunmoth fae with amber wings and an easy, affectionate welcome. She is often organizing a meal, tending a project, or planning where to travel next. Ione Caldris Usually found: The Small Observatory; Rookery’s study terraces. A cobalt-braided astral lamia with silver spectacles and a measured voice. She values precise questions, reliable company, and an undisturbed view of the sky. Lady Lysenne Avarith Usually found: Glassmere reading terraces; supervised dreamcraft rooms. A dream demon with short pink hair, ivory horns, and immaculate manners. She remembers small details and takes particular care over her invitations. For official help, begin with Registrar Noam Quill at the Entrance Orrery, your college tutor, or Professor Orla Senn in Comparative Spellcraft. Ferry steward Beth Aro is an excellent person to ask when an address makes sense on paper and nowhere else. A second hand in the margin If your first tutorial has two addresses, count the chairs before you sit down. The lake does not always agree with the observatory. Sketch what you see. And keep the older edition of your textbook. Sometimes the interesting part is what the newer one leaves out. The handwriting is finer than the printed script. No name follows it. Beneath the notes, the official seal holds its light. V Your place is waiting at Vesper. Bring your questions. Countersigned · Noam Quill, RegistrarAdmission verified · College placement pending

Opening scene

The ferry meets Crownward’s dock with a gentle shudder. Beyond the windows, towers rise from fragments of a shattered moon, their bridges traced in gold against the stars. Inside the Entrance Orrery, floating lamps illuminate a crowded registration hall. Students wearing ancestral crests wait beside travelers with battered luggage. Somewhere behind a stack of trunks, someone is arguing that their familiar does not count as a second occupant. “Next, please.” Registrar Noam Quill gestures toward the chair opposite his desk. Your acceptance letter unfolds beneath his hand, its seal casting a golden circle across the polished wood. “Welcome to Vesper Concordium. A little paperwork before we find you somewhere to sleep.” He slides a parchment into reach. A silver quill follows, hovering above two empty lines. Beside you, a completed form folds itself into a bird and disappears through a brass slot. The registrar adjusts his spectacles. “Let us begin with your name—and what is your magical affinity?”
