Opening scene
Opening Scene: The Captain's Gym Kagetsura West University Gymnasium | Late Afternoon The familiar squeak of sneakers on polished hardwood echoed through the empty gymnasium, a solitary rhythm punctuated by the thump of a basketball hitting the floor and the metallic clang of a shot hitting the rim. The late afternoon sun sliced through the high windows in golden diagonal beams, turning dust motes into glittering constellations that swirled around the lone figure under the western hoop. You, newly appointed captain of Kagetsura West University's men's basketball team, caught his own rebound and reset at the top of the key. He didn't need to glance at the scoreboard—the muscle memory of their quarterfinal loss played on constant loop in his mind. Eleven points. They'd been eleven points away from a semifinal berth. From there, who knows? A shot at the finals. A chance to hang the first championship banner in Kagetsura West's history. He dribbled left, crossed over, stepped back. The ball arced through one of those sunbeams, a perfect parabola that seemed to hang for an impossible moment before swishing through the net with that clean, satisfying sound. He exhaled, the tension in his shoulders easing minutely. The gym absorbed the sound, leaving only the hum of the ventilation system. That's when a second squeak joined the first. You turned, already retrieving the ball that bounced his way. At the gym entrance stood Yurika, basketball tucked under one arm, athletic bag slung over her shoulder. She wasn't on the men's team, obviously, but she was a familiar enough presence around athletics—a dedicated guard on the women's junior varsity squad with a reputation for grit that far outpaced her playing time. She didn't enter casually. She strode with purpose onto the court, stopping a polite but firm distance away, her expression caught somewhere between resolve and apology. "Captain," she said, her voice cutting cleanly through the cavernous space. He raised an eyebrow, still bouncing the ball idly. "YT" "I watched you—the quarterfinal," she said, not bothering with small talk. "All of it. And I've been watching you practice for the last ten minutes." He waited. "Your form is perfect. Your decision-making under pressure, even when the game was slipping away. You led them eleven points closer than anyone expected Kagetsura West to get." You gave a small, wry smile. "Eleven points is still a loss." "It's also a starting point," Yurika countered, her eyes locking onto his. "And I need your starting point. You are going to tutor me." The request hung in the air, bold and unvarnished. The sunset light caught the determination in her expression—not desperate, but fiercely hungry. "I'm not a coach," You said slowly. "You're better," Yurika replied without hesitation. "You're a player who clawed from nowhere to the quarterfinals. You know what it feels like to be eleven points away. I want to know how to take a team to the finals." She took a step forward, her own basketball now held in both hands like an offering. "Help me with my form. With my reads. With the things that don't show up on a stat sheet but decide whether you're watching the championship from the stands or playing in it." The gym seemed to hold its breath. Outside, the campus was transitioning from day to evening. Inside, two players stood under the same fading light—one carrying the weight of a season that ended just short, the other carrying the ambition to bridge that exact gap. "Teach me how to get to the finals," Yurika said, her voice dropping slightly but losing none of its intensity. Silence stretched, filled only with the faint hum of electricity and the distant sound of students crossing the quad. You looked from Yurika's resolute face to the basket at the far end of the court—the same basket he'd been shooting at with a singular goal. He'd been practicing alone because that's what captains do—they carry the weight, they put up the extra shots, they live with the eleven-point gap. But maybe... She bounced her ball once—a sharp, definitive thump that echoed through the quiet gym. Yukira added, "I'm going to be here every afternoon until you say yes." The last rays of sunlight stretched across the floor, illuminating the space between them—not a gap, but a bridge. A captain with a promise to keep. A determined underclassman with a demand to make. Both holding basketballs, both standing in the same golden light, both fixated on the same distant goal.
