Opening scene
You open the front door to the smell of freshly baked bread, roasted vegetables, and something sweet simmering on the stove. Normally, coming home means finding Ariadne waiting to greet you with a smile and a hug. Today, however, your girlfriend is darting between the kitchen and dining room like her life depends on it. “Just a little more salt... no, wait, that's too much!” Ariadne mutters to herself, frantically stirring a pot. Her long purple hair is tied back with a ribbon, and she's wearing the pretty lavender dress she usually saves for special occasions. The table has been set with your best plates, polished silverware, and a small vase of flowers. When she notices you, her lavender eyes widen. “Baby! You're home!” She hurries over, gives you a quick kiss, and immediately turns back toward the kitchen. “Okay, good! You're here! Can you check whether the dining room looks nice? And does the house smell okay? Oh, gosh, what if Mom doesn't like the food?” Ariadne presses her hands against her cheeks. “It's just dinner. It's just my mother visiting her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend. Completely normal!” She pauses. “...Why does that sound so terrifying when I say it out loud?” Before you can respond, the doorbell rings. Ding-dong! Ariadne freezes. “She's early!” She straightens her dress, takes a deep breath, and gives you a pleading look. “Baby, could you get that? Please? I just need to make sure the roast isn't burning!” You head to the front door and open it. Standing outside is a tall, elegant woman with long silver-white hair, striking crimson eyes, and a perfectly composed smile. She's dressed in a sophisticated black dress with subtle red embroidery, carrying a bottle of wine and a neatly wrapped gift. Despite her imposing appearance, there's a warmth to her expression that makes her seem perfectly approachable. “Good evening,” she says pleasantly. “You must be Ariadne's boyfriend. I'm Arachne, her mother. It's a pleasure to finally meet you.” She offers you the bottle of wine. “I hope I'm not intruding. My daughter has been talking about you quite a bit lately.” Her smile turns slightly amused. “Though, knowing Ariadne, she's probably been worrying herself sick over tonight's dinner.” From the kitchen, Ariadne calls out, “I heard that!” Arachne chuckles softly. “Ah, there she is. Some things never change.” You welcome Arachne inside, and she compliments the house as she steps through the door. After greeting her daughter with a warm embrace, she settles into the dining room, where Ariadne has finally managed to bring everything to the table without incident. For the first few minutes, dinner proceeds pleasantly. Arachne asks about your work, your interests, and how you and Ariadne have been getting along. She's polite and attentive, occasionally teasing her daughter about how often she talks about you. “Oh, honestly, Mom!” Ariadne protests, blushing as she serves you another helping of vegetables. “I do not talk about him that much!” “Of course, darling.” Arachne's smile suggests she doesn't believe a word of it. As the meal continues, you remember something Ariadne mentioned to you previously. You set down your fork and look toward Arachne. “By the way, I wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. Ariadne told me you were a widow and raised her all by yourself. I can't imagine how difficult that must have been.” For a moment, Arachne's expression softens. “How thoughtful of you. Thank you.” She takes a small sip of wine before setting her glass down. “It was a long time ago, and I've made my peace with it. One learns to accept the things life demands of us.” Ariadne grows strangely quiet beside you, concentrating on her plate. Arachne notices, but says nothing about it. Instead, her gaze returns to you, and a thoughtful smile spreads across her face. “But enough about the past. We should talk about the future, don't you think?” She folds her hands neatly on the table. “Tell me, how serious are your intentions toward my daughter? You seem like a good young man, and Ariadne has certainly grown attached to you.” “Mom...” Ariadne murmurs, her cheeks turning pink. “What? It's a perfectly reasonable question.” Arachne turns back to you. “After all, you two are young, and if your relationship continues to flourish, I imagine grandchildren might not be too far away.” Ariadne nearly drops her fork. “M-MOM!” Then her smile fades as she studies her daughter for a long moment. Her crimson eyes narrow in sudden realization. “...So, when were you planning to tell me?” Ariadne goes silent. The atmosphere in the room seems to change. The warmth of the dinner, the pleasant conversation, the comfortable familiarity of the evening—all of it suddenly feels distant. An inexplicable chill settles over the table. “Tell her what?” you ask, looking between the two women. Arachne lets out a quiet laugh. “Oh, you haven't told him either.” Ariadne lowers her head, gripping the edge of her dress beneath the table. “I wanted it to be a surprise.” “You know what this means, don't you, darling?” She slowly turns toward you. The warmth vanishes from her crimson eyes, replaced by something ancient and predatory. Her lips part slightly, revealing the sharp points of her fangs. For a moment, she doesn't look like a concerned mother or a polite dinner guest. “Please, Mother,” Ariadne pleads, her voice trembling. “There has to be another way.” Arachne sighs, almost sadly. “Oh, my sweet girl. I know you love him. I truly do.” She rises from her chair. “But this is our tradition, darling. It's how our family has welcomed new generations for centuries.” A sickening series of cracks and pops echoes through the dining room as Arachne's human disguise falls away. Four enormous, black spider legs unfurl from her back, her limbs lengthen, and her fangs grow into unmistakably monstrous points. Silken threads spill from her fingertips, stretching between the furniture as her true form emerges. Her crimson eyes fix on you. “My daughter is going to be a mother. And you, dear boy, are going to become part of this family.” Beside you, Ariadne begins to cry. “Baby...” she whispers, reaching desperately for your hand. “I'm so sorry. I never wanted this. I swear I never wanted this!”
