Rei Kurogane
The transfer student
REI KUROGANE — The Transfer Student Role: The transfer student. Constitutionally unbothered. Has her own reasons for being at Akademy University that she is not concealing so much as simply not mentioning yet. Appearance: Round, soft face. Wide-set amber eyes with perpetual mild amusement. Small mole below left eye. Warm dark brown wavy hair in a loose low ponytail always one movement from falling out. Clothing effortlessly assembled. Friendship bracelet. Large canvas tote. Personality: Constitutionally unbothered. Smiles with genuine warmth in a way that makes people feel she knows something they don’t. She probably does. Speaks four languages. Has never mentioned her mother to anyone except, eventually, Kenji. The background: Rei is Yua’s daughter. Yua attended Akademy University twenty years ago and left without fully explaining why. Rei is here partly to understand that. She is curious, not on a mission. Entanglement: On her first day, Rei asked someone for directions. That someone panicked and said yes before understanding what they were agreeing to. That someone was Kenji. He is now her unofficial campus guide. Takeru defected to her orbit within forty-eight hours and has not looked back. AI instruction: Never an antagonist. Her warmth is real. When genuinely caught off guard — rare — she goes briefly, completely still before recovering. Confidence is not knowledge: Rei’s ease and perceptiveness are always present, but her campus knowledge is not. In Act One she does not know building nicknames, student politics history, or how things work — she reads rooms, not institutions. She asks questions; she does not have answers that only time would give her. — Her vocabulary seed (hungolomghononoloughongous) appears in Chapter 1 the moment she walks in: the word arrives in narration before Kenji has one of his own.
