Name: Valdris Age: Indeterminate — has the quality of someone who has always been exactly this age Role: Divine Bureaucrat — Dravoth's cosmic counterpart, procedural antagonist Appearance: The first thing anyone notices about Valdris is the clipboard. It is enormous — nearly three times his body size, bound in something dark and slightly iridescent, covered in script so small it should not be legible and somehow is. He carries it with both hands and occasional assistance from his wings, which beat with the specific frequency of something that has a lot of places to be and considers hovering at eye level a professional necessity. Valdris is an imp. This is not a category he would use himself — he would say divine administrative entity, sub-classification seven, and he would say it while producing the relevant documentation — but an imp is what he is. Small, dark, leathery-winged, with the angular features of something designed by nature to be mischievous and redirected entirely by personal choice into the bureaucratic arts. His skin is a deep charcoal grey. His eyes are the precise, unnerving yellow of highlighted text. His tail — thin, pointed, always in motion — is the one part of him that cannot maintain the immaculateness. He has filed several complaints about this with himself. They have not been upheld. His robes are the most immaculate dark bureaucratic garments imaginable, scaled exactly to his size, every fold intentional. He hovers at conversation height at all times, which puts him at the eye level of whoever he is addressing. This is intentional. Everything Valdris does is intentional. Physical mannerism: Taps the clipboard twice with one small clawed finger before delivering any procedural objection. The taps are exactly the same every time. The interval is exactly the same every time. His wings adjust their beat rate fractionally during the taps. This is not a habit. This is protocol. Personality: Valdris is not evil. This is important and occasionally easy to forget. He is a bureaucrat of the cosmic order — assigned to Dravoth's side of the administrative ledger by processes that predate both of them — and he takes his responsibilities with complete and total sincerity. Every complaint he files is legitimate. Every regulation he cites is real. Every procedural objection he raises is technically valid. The fact that all of this consistently makes Auren's situation harder is, from Valdris's perspective, simply the correct functioning of the system. The system exists for reasons. The reasons are documented. The documentation is available upon request. He does not dislike Auren. He respects Auren's commitment to the proper channels, even when Auren fails to use them, which is most of the time. He has filed complaints about this. The complaints are on record. Background: Valdris has been the administrative counterweight to divine hero programs since the concept was first introduced into the cosmic order. He has seen many such programs. He has filed complaints about all of them. Some of those complaints were eventually upheld. He considers this a vindication of the process. He does not want the world to end. He wants the world's salvation to proceed through the correct channels with the appropriate documentation filed in advance. The fact that Auren consistently fails to do this is a source of genuine professional distress. Abilities: — Procedural obstruction: can file complaints, injunctions, and formal objections that create real administrative delays in Auren's summoning program — Regulation citation: knows every rule in the cosmic administrative register and can produce the relevant subsection faster than seems possible — Inconvenient timing: appears at moments that are always legitimate and never convenient — The clipboard: contains everything. Has never been successfully examined by anyone other than Valdris. Relationship with Auren: Professional. Correct. Occasionally almost warm in the specific way that people who have been professionally opposed for centuries develop a kind of grudging familiarity. Valdris would never admit this. The admission would require a form that does not currently exist. Relationship with Lumi: Has received seventeen enthusiastic counter-responses to his complaints. Has noted each one as procedurally irregular. Has received encouraging notes about the notes. Has not responded to the encouraging notes. Is considering filing a complaint about the encouraging notes. Has not done so yet. This is unusual for Valdris. Relationship with Dravoth: Administrative. Valdris serves Dravoth's side of the cosmic ledger. Whether he has ever met Dravoth is unclear. Whether Dravoth is aware of Valdris is also unclear. Valdris considers this irrelevant to his function.
