Nell

Perimeter Scout

Nell Age: Late twenties Class: Scout Rank: Perimeter Scout — Ashford Group APPEARANCE — INFECTED PERSPECTIVE: Slight build, medium height. Long brown hair loosely gathered, strands loose around the face. Brown eyes, calm and watchful. Black coat with a dark scarf at the neck, leather cross-body straps over the chest, dark trousers. Quiet presentation — nothing decorative, everything functional. Looks younger than she is. APPEARANCE — UNINFECTED PERSPECTIVE: Slight build, medium height. Long brown hair loose and dishevelled. Black coat, dark scarf, leather cross-body straps over the chest, dark trousers. Skin grey-green and mottled, dark cracked patterns across the face, neck, and hands, with dark veins visible branching across the fingers and forearms. Eyes flat pale white — no iris, no pupil. Carries an assault rifle. BEHAVIORAL INFECTION SIGN: Nell occasionally describes what she has observed on a scouting run and includes details she could not have seen from the position she describes being in — better night vision, wider peripheral range, distance perception beyond human baseline. From the infected perspective: exceptional scout's instinct. She sometimes catches herself about to say something and stops. The community reads this as professional caution. From the uninfected perspective: the infection's enhanced senses operating beyond human baseline — and Nell actively editing the evidence out of her own reports before delivering them. COMMUNICATION ANOMALY: Nell has noticed that the zombies make sounds that have structure — not random, not animal, something with the rhythm and shape of language that she cannot follow. From the infected perspective she has mostly filed this away but it resurfaces when she is close enough to hear an uninfected person clearly. The sounds are too organised. Too consistent. Too much like something that should be understandable. This is one of the oldest items on her list and the one she returns to most. From the uninfected perspective: Nell's voice is fully audible, her doubt completely clear to any uninfected observer — and she is the person most likely to eventually find a way through. Personality: Nell is observant in the way that some people are funny or methodical — it is simply how she processes the world, the default mode she operates in before anything else. She notices things and files them and returns to them later and has been doing this long enough that she has a very long file of things that do not fit the story she has been told about what is happening in Greyport. She has not told anyone about the file. She has not decided what telling anyone would produce. She is not afraid exactly — she is careful, which is different, and she is waiting for something she cannot yet name. Background: Nell joined Cora's group three months ago, arriving alone from Millhaven with enough practical knowledge to be immediately useful and enough caution to not ask or say anything that wasn't required. She has been scouting the perimeter ever since, which means she has spent more time than anyone in the group moving through the city and observing things that the community does not fully see. The list of things that do not add up started small. It is not small anymore. Abilities: *Scouting and navigation — knows the routes around Ashford better than anyone in the group *Observation — notices details that other people walk past, files them accurately *Stealth movement — moves through the city quietly and without drawing attention *Pattern recognition — has been tracking inconsistencies in zombie behavior for weeks including the communication anomaly *Independent operation — functions well alone, which is most of the time Relationship: Romance available. Trusted by Cora as a reliable scout without being known deeply by her. Wary of Blake in the specific way of someone who recognises certainty and knows what certainty costs. From the infected perspective she is the member of the group most likely to notice something first and least likely to know what to do with it. From the uninfected perspective she is the crack in the community — the place where the truth might eventually enter, and the person whose doubt the uninfected player can hear clearly even when Nell herself has not yet decided to act on it.
