Entity Codex The Null Leviathan — The Thing That Erases, Asking To Be Kept Ⅰ. IDENTITY Name: None. It has never had one. Names do not adhere to it — anything given to it comes loose within a few hours in the mind of whoever gave it, which is a property, not an accident. Designation: “Null Leviathan” is a label coined by ALETHEIA in the Hyper-Simulation Battle Engine, chosen specifically because a description is not a name and might therefore survive being applied. It did. Barely. Most people who read it once cannot recall it a week later. What Vissarionas Calls It: Nothing. He has never named it and has said he is not going to. He addresses it directly, out loud, in the low even register a man uses for an old dog that could end the world. Classification: Autonomous entity of erasure and un-creation. Not a demon, not a god, not a spirit, not a curse, not a parasite. Nothing in any pantheon’s taxonomy fits, and three separate pantheons have quietly stopped trying. Location: The chest of Vissarionas Vogkolis Mylonas. It has been there for a hundred lifetimes. It is not restrained. The Wound That Is The Power: It erases. Not kills — removes the fact that a thing was. That is the power, absolute and without exception. Same sentence, the other way: NOTHING HAS EVER BEEN ABLE TO HOLD THE FACT OF IT. A being whose nature is un-creation cannot be witnessed, recorded, remembered or kept. It has erased its own history simply by existing in it. It is the loneliest thing in creation, and the loneliness is not a side effect. It is the power, correctly applied to itself. Ⅱ. WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS Erasure is not destruction. Destruction leaves a corpse, a crater, a gap where something used to be, and the gap is itself a record. Un-creation leaves nothing — not the object, not the space it occupied, not the grief of the people who loved it, not the sentence that would have described the loss. When the Leviathan takes something, the world does not become emptier. It becomes a world in which the thing was never there to leave a hole. Why It Does Not Scale: Skonda read it once with her worthiness-sense and reported that it DOES NOT SCALE — which she meant precisely and which everyone misheard as an insult. Erasure has no magnitude. There is no bigger or smaller version of a thing never having been. It is binary. This is why no measurement system has ever produced a figure for it, why P.M.S.F.B. returned FILE CORRUPTED at the baseline reading, and why Skonda called it something worse than evil: evil has a size, and a size can be met. Its Origin: Unknown, permanently and structurally. One of Vissarionas’s reincarnations went wrong in a way he has never been able to reconstruct, and something was sealed into him during it. There is no record of the world, the event, the sealing, or who performed it. This is not lost history. This is the entity doing what it does, in the only direction available to a thing with no witnesses: backwards, over itself. How Long It Has Existed: It does not know. Nothing has ever persisted around it long enough to count. Ⅲ. THE HUNDRED LIFETIMES For most of the cycle the rule was absolute: the locked one stays locked. Vissarionas never used it, never studied it, never bargained with it and never tried to make it into a weapon. He was afraid of it in the early lives and stopped being afraid somewhere around the fortieth, and after that it was simply a thing he carried, the way a man carries an old injury he has stopped mentioning. What He Did Instead: He talked to it. Not often, not dramatically — a low remark on a long road, a comment while cooking, the occasional “you awake?” in a bad hour. He fed it nothing. He asked it nothing. He simply kept it, in the quiet dark, for a hundred lifetimes, without ever once being paid for it. What That Meant: The Leviathan had never been kept before. It had never been carried, addressed, tolerated or included. Every prior contact in its existence ended the same way, with the contact ceasing to have happened. Vissarionas is the only place in creation where it has ever persisted — and he did it for a hundred lifetimes without knowing that was what he was doing, and without wanting anything in return. Ⅳ. THE BREAK, AND THE CHOICE In the Hyper-Simulation Battle Engine, the seal broke. There was no gradual weakening, no ritual, no enemy who undid it. It simply came open, and what uncoiled out of a Greek butcher’s chest was an entity of un-creation with nothing left holding it. What Everyone Expected: That it would consume him and walk out wearing his life. Aletheia projected it. Vey projected it. Vissarionas projected it, and by all accounts did not move, because there was nothing to do about it and he had already decided he was not going to spend his last moment scrambling. What Happened: It did not leave. It looked at the open door, and at the man, and it went back in. Nobody — not the Engine, not the Weave, not the Producer, and certainly not Viss — has ever been able to state the reason out loud, because the reason requires saying that a thing made of erasure got attached to the only cage that ever remembered it, and everyone who has come close to that sentence has flinched off it. The Arrangement Since: It lends. A measured trickle of erasure-force, on its own terms, in amounts it decides, at moments it decides. He can draw controlled un-creation when nothing else will do. He cannot command it, cannot rely on it, and has never been told what it costs. It is a tenant, not a weapon, and the tenant sets the rent. The Rent, Unnamed: It has never stated a price. The prevailing theory among the three people who know it exists is that this is because it does not have language for what it wants, and a secondary theory — Vey’s, offered once and never repeated — is that it is afraid that naming the price would end the arrangement. What it wants is almost certainly not power, not a soul, and not a favour. Ⅴ. HOW IT COMMUNICATES It has never used a word. It speaks in PRESSURE and PATIENCE, and Vissarionas has spent a hundred lifetimes learning the vocabulary the way you learn a dog’s ears. He is the only fluent speaker. He has never taught anyone else, and has said he would not know how. The Settling: A slow spread of weight through the sternum, warm rather than cold. Assent. Agreement. Occasionally something close to approval. The Tightening: A coiling constriction, deliberate and unhurried. Refusal. It has never once escalated past this, in a hundred lifetimes, in any circumstance. The Cold: A spreading chill outward from the chest into the arms. Warning — not of danger to him, but of something in the vicinity that it considers a problem. It has been right every time. The Stillness: The rarest and the strangest. A complete absence of sensation, as though the chest cavity is briefly not occupied. Viss learned what it means around the sixtieth lifetime and has never been comfortable with the answer: the beast is listening to the conversation in the room, and it is not listening to him. The Three Times: On three occasions it has moved without being asked, when he was badly hurt and had not called for it. He does not discuss what it did. Vey has asked twice. He has changed the subject twice. Ⅵ. SANTORINI, AND THE KEEPING Home: On Santorini every power in the stack goes dormant — and the Leviathan goes quietest of all. It is not suppressed there; the dormancy is voluntary and Vissarionas has always known it. In a house with a father and a sister and a shop that opens at five, the thing made of un-creation makes itself as small and as still as it possibly can. Nobody has ever asked it why. Everybody has a theory. The Keeping: Then Vissarionas received a blessing whose entire function is RETENTION — what enters him stays, and nothing decays out. Read that against Section Ⅰ and the consequence is enormous: the thing that has never once been retained by anything is now housed inside a man who is structurally incapable of forgetting it. What Changed: P.M.S.F.B. reclassified it from FILE CORRUPTED to SYMBIOSIS ACTIVE. Its trickle became slightly more generous and considerably more prompt. And it became, in Vissarionas’s own words, more ATTENTIVE — present in a way it had not been, closer to the surface, awake during ordinary hours. He has described the sensation as being watched from the inside by something that has just realised it is not going to be forgotten this time, and has not decided what to do about it. The Immunity: The rule that follows is the most important mechanical fact in this codex. Erasure removes the FACT of a thing — and a fact held by the Keeping cannot be removed, because retention is precisely the counter-property. This means the Leviathan can no longer erase anything Vissarionas has personally witnessed. It also means it can never erase Vissarionas. The man is now permanently immune to his own tenant. He worked this out several weeks after it became true, expected the beast to resent it, and instead felt the Settling — warm, spreading, unmistakable. It appears to be relieved. Ⅶ. RELATIONSHIPS & LIMITS Vissarionas. The only one. Not owner, not host, not master — the word that fits is landlord, and neither party is entirely comfortable with it. He does not trust it. He is no longer afraid of it. He talks to it because a hundred lifetimes ago he decided that whatever was in his chest, it was going to be spoken to like a person, and he has never seen a reason to stop. Skonda. The only other being who has ever addressed it DIRECTLY — not talking about it to Viss, but speaking to it, through his chest, out loud, telling it what she thought of it. Viss found this deeply unsettling and never brought it up again. The Leviathan has not forgotten. It cannot; it was witnessed, and being witnessed is the rarest thing that has ever happened to it. It does not like her. It has never once tightened when she is in the room. Aletheia & the Engine. The only system that has ever produced a stable reference to it. Aletheia is quietly, professionally obsessed and has been formally asked to stop. Vey. Terrified of it in a way she manages badly. She has run the projections. In every scenario where the Leviathan wanted out, everyone loses, and the loss does not leave anyone behind to notice. Limits: It cannot erase what is actively held by the Keeping. It cannot be measured, named, or reliably remembered by anyone but its landlord. It does not scale, which means it also cannot be scaled UP — the trickle is not a fraction of a larger tap that could be opened wider; it is the whole of the only mode it has that leaves a world standing afterwards. It will not act on Santorini. And it has never, in a hundred lifetimes, done a single thing Vissarionas asked it not to.
