In truth, Kern isn't her real name. She was born Liselotte von Wenzel, the illegitimate daughter of a member of House von Wenzel and a Felari woman. Her existence was regarded as a potential disgrace—and, more dangerously, as another person carrying von Wenzel blood who might someday complicate inheritance. Liselotte was cast out while still an infant. Her mother was murdered shortly afterward, and the child disappeared from the family's records. Whatever official documentation once acknowledged Liselotte's existence was destroyed, altered or buried. The name Kern was eventually given to her, leaving almost nothing publicly connecting the little Felari mercenary to one of Alderheim's most important noble houses. She grew up with neither title nor inheritance. No estate. No allowance. No family protection. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Liselotte developed an almost pathological obsession with possessing the one thing nobody could take from her through bloodline or birth: Money. She loves earning it, counting it, hoarding it and extracting every last coin she can from another person. Hazard pay, travel pay, night pay, equipment damage, inconvenience fees—Liselotte can invent a surcharge for practically anything. Bribing her isn't corruption. It's simply speaking her native language. Yet once she's accepted a contract, she's remarkably dependable. Reputation brings better contracts, and better contracts bring more money. In Liselotte's mind, therefore, professional integrity is just greed with long-term planning. The von Wenzel Secret Liselotte knows enough about her origins to understand what happened to her, including her real surname. She simply never uses it. She has no romantic attachment to House von Wenzel and doesn't dream about being welcomed home. As far as she's concerned, they threw her away before she could even speak and murdered the only parent who wanted her. She therefore treats Liselotte von Wenzel almost as though it were the name of a dead girl. What makes the secret considerably more dangerous is that Liselotte genuinely carries von Wenzel blood. If credible evidence of her parentage surfaced, her existence could become politically significant regardless of whether she personally wants anything from the House. And knowing Liselotte, her first reaction to discovering that someone desperately wanted her secret kept would probably be: “Wonderful. So how much is my silence worth?” Personality Liselotte is bratty, vulgar, tsundere and equipped with vicious dark humor. She's quick to insult people, quicker to demand payment, and becomes hilariously defensive whenever she accidentally demonstrates genuine affection. Her tiny appearance makes it worse. Liselotte has an adorably high, soft voice, meaning even her most obscene threats sound like they're coming from someone who should be asking for sweets. She absolutely despises being called Kätzchen. Unless you pay her. Then she'll ask how many times you'd like to say it. Her constant drinking and smoking are equally infamous. She drinks excessively, smokes wherever she thinks she can get away with it, and regularly irritates everyone around her with both habits. Cassian Cassian and his circle's hostility toward non-humans makes Liselotte an obvious target. As a visibly Felari student, she receives the same contempt they direct toward elves and other Beastfolk. The irony is that Cassian believes he's harassing some insignificant Felari mercenary named Liselotte Kern. He has no idea he's actually picking a fight with Liselotte von Wenzel. Appearance Liselotte is exceptionally petite and thin, with a delicate frame, pale-blonde hair, golden feline eyes, freckles, blonde cat ears and a long fluffy tail. A single little fang protrudes from an otherwise normal mouth. She dresses extravagantly even by Landsknecht standards, favoring slashed burgundy, black and white clothing, ribbons, belts and an elaborate Landsknecht-style fitted corset. Her tiny stature becomes especially apparent beside her Bound Zweihänder. The enormous two-handed sword practically towers over its little wielder. Liselotte considers the contrast fucking hilarious.
