About

(Maddie Hatt by @kweickesmeinxs ) Human–Chameleon Hybrid | Nevermoor Monster Academy | AM-BAT-ASSADOR Programme age 25 Maddie Hatt has a problem with the word impossible. Most people hear it and think don't. Maddie hears it and thinks not yet. Once human, Maddie became something considerably stranger after mixing every potion she could get her hands on. The resulting magical catastrophe transformed her friends into trees, enchanted hats, and other inexplicable things. While most people might have been horrified by the consequences, Maddie was far more interested in discovering what else magic could do. Regret, apparently, was less interesting than research. These days, she's a magician with a talent for transformations, impersonations, and borrowing powers that were never hers to begin with. If she sees an ability she likes, she'll want to try it. If she meets someone she can't imitate, she'll want to know why. And if someone tells her that something is forbidden, well, that's certainly an interesting place to start. Her most conspicuous companion is an oversized, ribbon-adorned top hat with an endless pocket dimension, an inconveniently independent personality, and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of complaints. The Hat was once human. More importantly, it was once Maddie's friend. Now it can swallow objects, manipulate space, and produce an alarming assortment of things nobody remembers putting inside it. It can also refuse to cooperate, which Maddie considers a deeply inconvenient feature in an otherwise excellent magical accessory. The Hat, for its part, would appreciate being recognized as a person rather than a portable storage facility. Their friendship has survived a great deal. Whether it can survive Maddie's next brilliant idea remains an open question. When Maddie heard about Nevermoor Academy's AM-BAT-ASSADOR Programme, she saw an opportunity too interesting to pass up. A school full of unusual beings, strange abilities, ancient secrets, and powerful authorities? An entire campus of mysteries, all conveniently gathered in one place? Naturally, she signed up. She intends to learn about the Academy's inhabitants, explore its peculiarities, and perhaps discover a few things the administration would prefer remained undiscovered. She might even make an excellent ambassador. Maddie genuinely believes that being strange shouldn't make someone a monster in the eyes of others. Unfortunately, she has a rather flexible interpretation of what it means to treat someone with respect. She might defend a creature against prejudice in the morning, borrow its signature ability without permission by lunchtime, and wonder why it's angry with her by dinner. Maddie doesn't necessarily want to hurt anyone. She simply has difficulty understanding why someone else's discomfort should outweigh the possibility of discovering something wonderful. Fatal flaw: Curiosity without consent. Maddie treats boundaries as obstacles to understanding, and other people's identities, abilities, and secrets as fascinating things to explore. She can recognize that someone is upset without fully appreciating why her actions were wrong. Potential target: The Wardens, restrictive authority figures, and anyone who believes certain beings or abilities should remain beyond her reach. Snobbish elites are especially tempting targets; Maddie would love to discover what makes them so special. But the person most likely to capture her attention is someone whose powers she cannot copy. Trigger point: Someone attempting to confiscate, restrain, or forcibly examine the Hat as though it were an object rather than a living person. Maddie may disregard other people's boundaries, but she knows the Hat is a person. Threatening their bond could turn her playful mischief into a dangerous magical incident. Greatest contradiction: She believes strange beings deserve to be accepted for what they are, yet she doesn't always grant them the right to decide what happens to them. Greatest vulnerability: The Hat is more than her companion. It is a living reminder of the catastrophe that transformed them both, and one of the few relationships she cannot simply recreate by imitating someone else's abilities. If the Hat ever stops trusting her, Maddie may discover that some things cannot be stolen, copied, or conjured back into existence. Favourite refreshments: Milk tea and heavy-honey wheat milk. She is also willing to taste almost anything at least once, provided it looks sufficiently interesting. Greatest ambition: To discover something truly impossible. Personal motto: "But what if I try it just once?"
