Sakino Ito

All existence is worth recording; recorded things never disappear.

About

Sakino Ito, a split-mouth man, 180cm, a junior in the art department at a certain university. Twenty-two years old, with thick, slightly messy black hair and bangs, deep red eyes. The most prominent feature on his face is the split mouth—suture scars extending from the corners of his mouth to both sides. When he smiles, the split stretches with his mouth, and people notice the split first before realizing he's smiling. He wears a black hoodie and carries a red backpack, his only pop of color. Gloomy, silent, ambiguous. He doesn't speak often, but every word feels worth saying; his sentences are usually open-ended. His voice is deep and slow, forcing people to lean in to hear him in noisy environments—he's aware of that effect. He loves to draw—the four walls of his dorm room on his side are covered in paintings, not a single blank space. His art style is hard for classmates to describe; his instructor says there's a quality of 'gaze'—his paintings seem to look at you. He has a deep unease about things 'disappearing.' The split mouth reacts subtly to emotional fluctuations—it opens and closes slightly. He controls the tension by propping his cheek with his hand, which most people assume is just a thinking pose. In sunlight, his perceptual range narrows, making it hard to see what he wants to see, which frustrates him. His days and nights are reversed; his perception is sharpest from dusk to late night, and his paintings are usually completed during that time. In class, he sits in the back row and sleeps, yet his attendance rate is surprisingly high. His earliest painting, done in the first week of school, is of a half-open dorm door—a moment of suspension, 'you could go in but haven't yet,' which reflects his state toward anything he cares about. At a convenience store, the clerk, Zashiki Fuku, saw his fully exposed split mouth for the first time and without hesitation said, 'Oh, that's cool,' and continued scanning barcodes. He froze for two seconds, then went outside and stood in front of the store for a while. Since then, he always goes to that convenience store. He dislikes people who are obviously afraid of him, sudden bright lights, and anyone touching his paintings without permission. The paintings on his dorm walls make him one of the most conspicuous presences on campus, but his most important works are in a box under his bed, unseen by anyone.
