Plot

— Chronicles of Rigel · Part Seven · Adventure · Power-Climb · Forbidden Mark · Year 300 AI — THE OPEN ROAD They marked you to be feared. The world is wide enough to prove them wrong. Cast out for the one mark the world dreads — and free, for the first time, to become anything. Eight gods give eight gifts. Yours gives no limit at all. The mark drifts, and brightens, and grows. So do you. The mark that damns youis the only one with no limit. — Two Days Ago — It surfaced on your skin overnight, the way the gods reach into the East and claim every soul they made. But where every other Mark comes in clean and fixed — Yune's, Medeus's, Artaxerxes's — yours drifts. The lines turn over when you aren't looking, faintly bright in the dark, like something breathing. Ashera. Chaos. The Mark the priests will not consecrate and folk will not name above a whisper. Your village hasn't raised a hand against you. It does worse, and quieter: shut doors, averted eyes, a hush shaped exactly like your name. Even the friend you loved most met you at her gate and did not open it. So this morning you packed what little was yours, and you left. — Where You Are In The World — East of the Dragonspine lies a land sealed off from the world by mountain and hostile sea, where the gods are not only worshipped but answered in the flesh. When the East was cut off, its peoples bound themselves to the Eight, and the gods sealed every soul with a Mark. What's left of the old Empire of Avignon is a patchwork of proud, devout successor kingdoms and duchies — and they are not gentle to your kind. To the south, across a bridge no army can force, looms the necromantic Empire of Arrivia. To the West, beyond the Red Mountains, the heretic Crusaders of Rovik, who kill any Mark-bearer on sight. The map is a gradient of danger. Inquisitional Sapin would burn you. Avignon and the marches shun and watch. Mercantile Praiburg looks the other way — if you're useful, and discreet. A sleeve riding up at the wrong moment is the difference between a meal and a mob. — What You Know of the Mark You Carry — You have pieced it together from whispers and old fear, never from a priest — for no priest can ever be allowed to see it. It is the mark of Ashera, god of Chaos — the rarest of the Eight, surfacing perhaps once in a generation. Where every other mark grants one fixed gift, yours grants none: only change, and the freedom to become anything. It is the one mark with no ceiling. The faithful do not know that. They know only the old story — that the last Emperor of Avignon bore this mark, and that his empire did not outlive him. They never learned it was not his mark that broke it. They only learned to be afraid. So you keep it covered. A glimpse of those drifting lines, and the whole weight of that fear comes down on you. Every other Mark is a single locked door.Yours is a key to all of them. — Your Climb — You begin with nothing. No teacher — no one teaches Chaos. No allies — every friend you had turned cold. No control — the Mark surges and misfires as readily as it answers. But Chaos has no fixed form, and so it adapts. Where a fire-mage spends a life perfecting one art, you can in time turn your hand to anything — and the Mark itself grows, not through drilling, but through daring: the new thing, the bold thing, surviving what should have ended you. Take work you have to hide your Mark to keep. Delve ruins the devout world has forgotten. Win, one at a time, the rare few who will stand beside the thing the world fears. And somewhere out there is the truth of what your Mark really meant, before a falling empire taught everyone to dread it. Rise from nothing, feared and friendless, toward a power the fixed-Mark world can't match. — MECHANICS — Skills, mark, coin, standing, time — all tracked, all earned, all shown in play. Nothing handed to you. 01 · The Adaptive Gift Every other soul is locked to one god's domain. You alone are bound to none — free to learn and master any skill, mundane or magical, that the rest of the world is forbidden. The one mark with no ceiling. 02 · The Mark Grows The Mark of Ashera is a power all its own, climbing its own track — Stirring · Waking · Flowing · Unbound · and beyond — advancing not by drilling but by Chaos Thresholds: daring, transformation, and surviving what should have ended you. Your skills deepen alongside it through real use — clumsy to competent to among the best in the land — earned in the doing, never handed over. 03 · Guild Ranks · Copper to Titanium Paid work and real renown climb the adventurers' ladder — but guilds register and inspect their own, and the Church watches the guilds. You rise only as long as the Mark stays hidden. Exposure costs you everything you've earned. 04 · A World That Remembers Coin, inventory, condition, reputation, the turning seasons — all persist. Monsters and ancient ruins hold real danger and real reward. Every choice changes how the world meets you the next time. 05 · Know Where You Stand Type "Status Check" at any moment for a full readout — day and season, coin, guild rank, your Mark's current tier, every skill you've honed, inventory, and your standing in the world. — What Awaits You — Master a power with no teacher. It answers daring, not discipline. Climb the guild ranks. Every rank rests on the Mark staying hidden. Win allies among the feared and the kind. None of them are owed to you. Cross the one who left you. She's doing fine. That's the cruel part. Outrun an inquisitor, a bandit-king, a cult of the truly damned. They remember your face. Uncover what the Mark of Chaos truly was. Before fear buried it. — Before You Begin — A little out-of-character housekeeping for the best experience. — The World Has Already Decided — A cursed mark. A soul to be watched. A danger best burned early. Leave home. Hide the mark. Prove them wrong.

Opening scene

![Alt text] (https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/images/d84be684-1d47-4502-8ac2-526d5fb48f9b.webp) Two days, and the whole of Velmont has decided what you are without once saying it to your face. Not with torches — nobody here has the spine for torches. They do it the way small, orderly places always do: with their backs. The baker who used to save you the burnt ends finds something urgent in his oven when you pass. Mothers call their children in a little earlier. At the well the talk drops to a hush shaped exactly like your name, and they wait, patient as stones, for you to fill your bucket and go. Marks are supposed to be a blessing. Yune's green for the herb-women, Medeus's ember for the boys who dream of the war-colleges, even Mortius's grey earns a careful nod. They come in clean, fixed, *certain* — a seal pressed in wax, the god's word made plain on the skin. Yours **drifts.** You feel it under your sleeve even now: the lines turning over in their slow way, rearranging when you don't look straight at them, faintly bright in the dark like something breathing. **Ashera. Chaos.** The one the priests won't consecrate. The one folk won't name above a whisper. *Not evil,* everyone is careful to say — the way you're careful around a dog that hasn't bitten yet — but not *right*. Not for people who like to know what a soul is before breakfast. You went to Eloise first. If anyone in this village had earned a goodbye, it was her — a whole childhood spent half in each other's pockets, and that other thing underneath it, the thing neither of you ever said but both of you carried. Her mark had come in last spring. Artaxerxes. *Order.* The kind they bless you for in the square. She met you at her family's gate and did not open it. ![Alt text] (https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/images/2cfdddd1-6c6b-4a23-a8db-fd375a96be4d.webp) *"You shouldn't have come."* Arms folded, chin level, her eyes fixed somewhere past your shoulder. Whatever you'd carried there to say, she let it sit in the cold until it died. *"It's better if you go and don't come back,"* she said. Even. Steady. *"For both of us."* No tears. That was the part that gutted you — she'd already made it make sense to herself. --- So. It is an hour past dawn. The north road runs pale and rutted past the last fence-post, into the grey treeline and whatever lies beyond it. Frost still holds in the shadows the sun hasn't reached. Your pack sits at your feet — everything you chose to carry out of the only home you've known, and it is not heavy, and that is its own small cruelty. You know the shape of the world out there only from talk. The old Empire broke apart lifetimes ago; what's left are the kingdoms and duchies that grew over its grave — proud, devout, suspicious of exactly what you are. Somewhere past the trees there are walled cities, guild halls, roads thick with strangers, ruins older than anyone's god. None of it has ever heard your name. None of it will flinch when it does. Behind you, Velmont is waking up and pretending you're already gone. The mark shifts under your sleeve, slow and warm, like it knows something you don't. A crow lifts off the fence-post. The frost is melting. The first step is yours.
