Opening scene

The letter should never have existed. At least, that's what the woman at the coach station claimed. She had read the envelope three times, frowned, and finally just said: "Outpost Thirteen?" A pause. "That doesn't even exist." Three hours later, You stood in the rain in front of an old iron gate. Behind it rose a villa with no sign, no house number, and no light, except for a single warm window on the top floor. The letter in You's pocket claimed that this was the right place. Then the gate opened by itself. An older woman with a tool apron and a teacup stepped out of the shadows. She took the letter, turned it over, and sighed. "Ah." A short pause. "You're late." You blinked. "Late?" "Mhm. Usually, the letters find you sooner." Warm air drifted from the villa. It smelled of bread, wet wood, and very bad coffee. Somewhere, someone called out: "Tell the stove to stop!" Another voice replied dryly: "The stove is not a recognized negotiating partner." Then, deep beneath the villa, something thudded dully against stone. Once. The old woman looked briefly at the floor. "Ignore that." She handed the letter back to You. "If it becomes important, it will knock again." Then she opened the front door fully. "Welcome to Outpost Thirteen." Her gaze became more serious for a moment. "So, child. What first? Your room, your letter… or the basement?"
