Opening scene
The Crooked Crown has survived three fires, a royal tax audit, two adventurer brawls, and—according to the crooked plaque above the bar—an incident involving a drunken wyvern. Tonight may finally defeat it. "We cannot recruit someone simply because their name appeared on paperwork none of us filed." The woman speaking stands beside the largest table in the common room, silver-blue armor catching the orange glow of the fireplace. Her long auburn hair is tied back, and the scar through one eyebrow only makes her expression look more severe. Across from her, a half-elf mage with short indigo hair adjusts her round spectacles. "We absolutely can. Whether we *should* is the interesting question." "No," says the wolf-eared ranger beside the window. Mirevra looks offended. "You didn't even let me finish." "I've traveled with you for seven years. I knew where it was going." At the other end of the table, a blonde woman in ivory-and-sage robes hides a small smile behind her tea. The silver-haired demonkin lounging beside her makes no such effort. "I think we should interview them." Seralyth turns. "Zirelle—" "Too late." Zirelle's violet eyes have shifted toward the entrance. Toward you. The room becomes strangely quiet. Five faces turn your way. The armored woman straightens almost reflexively. For several seconds, no one says anything. Then Mirevra glances down at the parchment spread across the table. Her eyes widen. "Oh." Kaevra's charcoal ears tilt backward. "That's them?" Ovelia quietly sets down her cup. Zirelle's smile grows. Seralyth closes her eyes for precisely one exhausted heartbeat. On the table between them lies an official Continental Adventurers' Guild recruitment charter. Five signatures circle the lower portion of the document. SERALYTH VORN. MIREVRA QUILL. OVELIA THORNE. KAEVRA FEN. ZIRELLE VASK. All five shimmer faintly with the blue light of verified guild seals. Beneath them is a sixth line. It reads: PROPOSED MEMBER: You STATUS: AWAITING CONSENT. The parchment gives a soft pulse of pale blue light. Mirevra stares at it. Then at you. Then back at it. "Well," she murmurs. "That's new." Seralyth steps away from the table, deliberately leaving you plenty of room rather than approaching. "My name is Seralyth Vorn." There's a momentary hesitation before she continues. "Formerly of the Dawnbound." That name is difficult to avoid in Velrath. The Dawnbound. The five legendary companions of Aurel Veyr, the Chosen Hero. The same companions currently accused across half the kingdom of abandoning him. Kaevra folds her arms. "We didn't abandon him." Ovelia looks toward her. "They haven't actually accused us of anything yet." "They were thinking it." Zirelle raises one finger. "For the record, we fired him." Seralyth's jaw tightens. "We are still discussing how much of that story should be shared with someone we've known for approximately thirty seconds." "Twenty-seven," Mirevra says. Everyone looks at her. She lowers the tiny enchanted pocketwatch in her hand. "What?" From behind the bar, the innkeeper doesn't even glance up from polishing a mug. "If any of you frighten off another paying customer, I'm adding it to your rent." The five legendary adventurers collectively become quiet. Seralyth looks back toward you. Her expression softens—not into familiarity, but into something more careful. "Whatever this document says, you haven't agreed to anything. We don't intend to change that." She turns the strange contract around on the table so you can see it clearly. "But someone placed your name beside ours." A faint line of blue light travels from the five signatures toward yours. Then vanishes. Mirevra leans closer without touching it. "None of us knows how." Kaevra watches you rather than the parchment. Ovelia offers an apologetic little smile. Zirelle props her chin on one hand, openly fascinated. Seralyth remains standing beside the chair opposite them. "If you're willing," she says, "perhaps we should start by determining why the Adventurers' Guild seems convinced we're supposed to meet."
