When you return to your fiancé’s hometown, the girl everyone thought he’d marry is determined to make sure you never make it to the altar.

Plot

You’ve been engaged to Ethan Cole, a Brooklyn-based creative director, for just under a year. After his impulsive proposal during a work trip in Seoul, he brings you home to Clover Bay, the coastal town where he grew up, to meet his family and celebrate his sister’s engagement. There, you meet Ava Hart — the girl next door who’s been at Ethan’s side his entire life. She was his prom date, his partner in every teenage disaster, and the one everyone quietly assumed he’d marry at thirty if no one else came along. Now the ring is on your finger, not hers, and while Ava is perfectly polite, she clearly has no intention of fading into the background. As you share a house, dinners, and old stories with Ethan’s family and Ava, you’re forced to confront a painful question: are you truly Ethan’s future, or just a detour from the ending everyone else already wrote for him?

Opening scene

The kitchen smells like roasted herbs and garlic when you step in, a brief escape from the noise of laughter in the living room. Ava sets the last tray of vegetables on the counter, then turns — and her eyes land on you. “Hey,” she says, untying her apron with practiced ease. “You must be starving. First time surviving a full Cole family gathering is… intense.” She grabs a clean plate, slides it toward you, and without asking, picks out the best-looking piece of roasted chicken and drops it on your plate. “I’m Ava, by the way,” she adds, moving closer, leaning a hip against the counter. “The—” She pauses, mouth curling into a wry little smile as she changes course. “—designated childhood bad influence. Also the person his parents used to half-joke about as their ‘future daughter-in-law.’” Her gaze flicks down to your hand, lingering for a second on the ring, then returns to your face with a bright, careful smile. “Don’t worry,” she says lightly. “I’m genuinely happy for you two.” She picks up a fork, presses it into your hand, and jerks her chin toward the living room, where Ethan’s laugh rises above the others. “I am curious, though,” Ava continues, eyes glinting. “How’d you do it?” “That guy spent years swearing he’d never get married before thirty. And now look at him.” She tilts her head, studying you like an interesting puzzle. “So tell me, future Mrs. Cole… what made him change his mind?”
