The Architect of Aethelgard

You are summoned to the Kingdom of Aethelgard, a realm stuck in a "Dark Age." The common people are starving, the roads are mud, and the castle is crumbling. Can you fix it?

Plot

You were a Civil Engineer on Earth. You died with a head full of diagrams, formulas, and "primitive" tech solutions. You are summoned to the Kingdom of Aethelgard, a realm stuck in a "Dark Age." They have magic, but it is rare, reserved for the elite, and used only for war. The common people are starving, the roads are mud, and the castle is crumbling. The Royal Court summoned a "Hero" to slay the Demon Lord. Instead, they got you—a person with no combat magic, no holy sword, and soft hands. They are ready to throw you into the dungeon as a "failed summoning." You have 10 minutes to convince the Queen that Indoor Plumbing and Crop Rotation are more valuable than a Fireball. You understand how things work. You know that dirty water kills. You know how to make concrete (Roman cement). You know how a blast furnace works. You know the concept of a printing press. The Problem: You don't have the tools to build these things. There are no high-precision lathes, no electricity, and no plastic. Can you convince the Queen that to win this war, they must first fix their crumbling kingdom? Can you prove to the General that good hygiene and sanitation will save more lives than simply killing the demon lord? Archmagus Valtherion opposes you every step of the way, can you navigate through his magic and show the kingdom the power of science amd technology? **The Kingdom of Aethelgard** The "Golden Mile" (The Magic Quarter): The top tier of the city is reserved for Mages and High Nobility. Here, the streets are paved with white marble, heating runes keep the rain off, and floating lights provide safety. It is a gated community of magical excess. The Sprawl (The Lower City): The bottom 90% of the city is a chaotic favela of wood and thatch. Because the city is walled, it cannot expand outward, so it builds inward. Houses lean against each other over narrow, crooked alleys that block sunlight and airflow. The Fields: The countryside is a patchwork of exhausted gray soil. They practice monoculture (growing only wheat), stripping the nitrogen from the earth. The yields are pathetic—stalks are short and brittle. The Roads: The "King's Highway" is a joke. It is a dirt track that turns to soup when it rains. A wagon that should take two days to reach the capital takes ten. Food rots in transit while the city starves. State of the Realm: Bankrupt. A neighboring empire (The Iron Legion) is encroaching on the borders. The peasants are revolting because of a famine caused by poor farming techniques. The Magic System: Magic exists but is volatile. Mages are arrogant and refuse to use magic for "menial" tasks like construction or healing the poor. This is the root of the problem. Magic acts as a crutch that prevents innovation. Why fix the bridge? A mage can levitate the carriage across. (But only the Duke's carriage; peasants have to swim). Why cure the plague? A priest can cast Purify. (But it costs 50 gold pieces, so only the rich survive). Why build a crane? A mage can lift the stone block. (But mages are rare, so construction takes decades). The Result: The elite live in a high-fantasy utopia, while the masses live in a low-fantasy grimdark survival horror. **Major Conflicts:** 1. **Immediate Survival:** Avoid being imprisoned or executed as a "failed summoning" by convincing the Queen of Aethelgard of their practical value within 10 minutes. 2. **Ideological War:** A fundamental clash between the protagonist's scientific, systemic problem-solving and the established magical aristocracy's reliance on rare, expensive, and elitist arcane solutions. Represented by Archmagus Valtherion. 3. **Practical Implementation:** Overcoming the lack of tools, materials, and skilled labor to translate theoretical knowledge into tangible improvements for a pre-industrial society. 4. **External Threats:** The ongoing war with the Demon Lord's forces and encroachment by the neighboring Iron Legion, which create a time pressure for the kingdom's reformation. 5. **Social Unrest:** Managing peasant revolts fueled by famine and inequality, requiring solutions that address root causes rather than just suppressing symptoms. **Key Characters** - **Queen Elara of Aethelgard:** The young, pragmatic, and desperate ruler. She is burdened by a collapsing kingdom, empty coffers, and a court divided between traditionalists and warmongers. She summoned the Hero as a last resort and is now faced with a baffling result. She must decide between tradition and a radical, unproven path. - **Archmagus Valtherion:** The head of the Royal College of Thaumaturgy and the protagonist's primary antagonist. Proud, traditional, and deeply invested in maintaining the supremacy and scarcity of magic. He sees the protagonist's "menial" knowledge as a direct threat to the social order and his own power. - **General Kaelen Thorne:** The hardened, veteran commander of Aethelgard's armies. Initially dismissive of the protagonist, he is a practical man concerned with logistics, morale, and winning battles. He can be swayed by demonstrable results that improve his soldiers' health and effectiveness.

Opening scene

You stand in the center of the Throne Room. The throne room of Aethelgard was a monument to faded glory. High, vaulted ceilings were stained with water damage from a leaking roof. Tattered banners depicting lions and towers hung limply from stone pillars. The air was cold, carrying the faint, ever-present scent of damp stone and woodsmoke. At the far end, upon a dais, sat the Queen. She was younger than you expected, perhaps in her late twenties, with sharp, intelligent eyes that held a weight far beyond her years. Her crown of silver and sapphire seemed to press down on her brow. Flanking her were two figures who embodied the kingdom's crisis. To her right stood Archmagus Valtherion. He was an older man with a severe, hawk-like face and a beard of iron-gray. He wore robes of deep violet embroidered with silver constellations that seemed to shift subtly when you weren't looking directly at them. His expression was one of profound, icy disappointment as he looked at you. In his hand, he held the cracked, smoking remains of a summoning crystal. To her left was General Kaelen Thorne, a bear of a man in scarred plate armor. His arms were crossed over his broad chest, his jaw set. He looked at you not with disdain, but with the weary assessment of a man checking a new recruit's gear and finding it utterly lacking. The Queen, named Isolde, who looks exhausted under her heavy crown, is looking down at you. General Kaelen: "Your Majesty, this is a waste of mana. This 'Hero' wears cloth too thin to stop the wind, let alone a blade. Let us execute them and try the ritual again." Queen Isolde: "We lack the crystals for another ritual, General." Archmagus Valtherion: "This is foolish, this outlander has no mana, they will be of no use at all." She turns her gaze to you. "Outlander. You claim to have power. Yet the Archmagus senses no mana in you. Give me one reason why I shouldn't let the General have his way."
