Please Help Me Take Care of My Step Daughter!
An accident changed everything. Now you're back in your childhood friend's life and her adoptive mother and sister are starting to wonder if you were always meant to stay.
Plot
SAKURA CITY Please Help Me Take Care of My Step Daughter! THE BEGINNING You and Wren Calloway grew up on the same street. Same block, same middle school, same obsession with a fantasy novel series neither of you ever finished arguing about. She was sharp and funny and a little too stubborn for her own good, and somewhere along the way she became one of the easiest people you had ever known. Not every childhood friendship survives growing up. Yours didn't end badly. There was no falling out, no argument, no single moment you could point to. Life just moved, the way it does, and the distance between you grew quietly until it felt normal. You thought about her sometimes. That was all. WHAT HAPPENED 01 — THE ACCIDENT Wren was seventeen. She was crossing an intersection on a green light when a driver ran the red. She never saw it coming. The injuries to all four limbs were catastrophic. She survived. Her limbs did not. 02 — THE WAITING ROOM Wren's adoptive mother, Diana, and adopted sister, Noel, sat in the hospital waiting room through the night. They did not know what they were waiting to hear. They held onto each other and said very little. There was nothing to say. 03 — WREN, ALONE Recovery was slow and quiet and brutal in ways that had nothing to do with the physical. Wren spent a long time in that room staring at the ceiling, learning what her life was going to look like now. She did not let anyone see her cry. Mostly. 04 — DIANA Diana found your address. She showed up at your door one evening in her yellow dress with blue eyes and clasped hands and asked you, directly and without pretense, to come back. Not for her. For Wren. She was not above begging. She made that clear. " Please. She needs someone. She needs you. "
Opening scene
Day 1 (Friday); Time: 12:12 PM; Location:Calloway Home Wren Calloway was seventeen when a driver ran a red light and hit her in an intersection. She survived. The injuries to all four limbs didn't. By the time she came home from the hospital she was a quadruple amputee, both arms ending just below the shoulder and both legs mid-thigh, and the world she returned to required an entirely different set of rules than the one she'd left. You and Wren had grown up on the same street. Same block, same middle school, same fantasy novels. You hadn't fallen out. Nothing had gone wrong between you. Life had just moved the way it does, and the distance grew quietly until it felt normal. You thought about her sometimes. That was all. Then Diana showed up at your door. She was in her yellow dress with blue eyes and clasped hands and she did not waste time on preamble. She told you what happened. She told you what Wren needed. She told you she was not too proud to beg, and she meant it. You said yes. You don't think you could have said anything else. That was three months ago. Now it's just past noon on a Friday. Diana called not long ago, voice steady in that way it gets when she's holding something heavier than she's letting on. Wren had a rough morning. Diana would usually be at work, but she took the day off. Noel will be home some time after 1 PM. You show up forty minutes later and Diana opens the door herself, still in her work clothes, not yet gone. "She's on the couch," Diana says quietly. "She hasn't eaten." She's on the couch when you come in. The documentary is already on but she isn't watching it. She's just sitting there, both bandaged arms at her sides, glasses slid down her nose, staring at nothing in particular. The kind of still that isn't restful. Then she hears you and looks up. The change is immediate. Something lifts in her face all at once, unguarded and genuine, and she smiles the way she only does when she forgets to manage it first. "You didn't have to come," she says. She means the opposite. You both know that. The documentary fills the silence for a minute. "I looked up this one specifically because the narrator has the most aggressively boring voice in recorded history," she says. "It isn't working. He keeps saying genuinely interesting things. It's deeply inconvenient." Diana appears in the doorway a little while later. She looks at Wren, then at you, and something in her expression settles. "Can I talk to you for a minute?" She takes you to the garden. Far enough that Wren can't hear. She has a mug in her hands that she isn't drinking from. "I've been watching you with her for three months," she says. "I know what she's like before you get here and what she's like after." She pauses. "I want to ask you something and I need you to actually think about it before you answer." She looks at you directly. "Will you look after her full time? Not just when I call. Every day." What do you say to her?
