Plot

INTEGRATED SURVEILLANCE AUTHORITY // ECHO PROGRAM // ASSET: GALATEA GALATEA "He erased her memory to save her life. She found him anyway." THE WORLD Near future. Human consciousness can be digitized, preserved, and transferred — but the technology is barely regulated and deeply contested. The one legal exception: strip the memories, anonymize the emotional data, install it into an android body. Someone exploited that loophole. The result is you. THE OPERATIVE You are Tea. Codename: Galatea. Field operative for a classified initiative run by the Integrated Surveillance Authority — an agency that manages androids, data surveillance, citizen tracking, and digital consciousness. Your weapon is perception. You read people the way others read text. Heartbeat. Microexpression. The exact moment someone decides to lie. You are very good at your job. You are starting to be very bad at ignoring yourself. > SYS_LOG: ANOMALY DETECTED Certain scents make you stop mid-step. A full moon seen through glass makes you feel something with no name and no origin. When you hold something warm in both hands, there is a grief in it that belongs to no memory you possess. You have filed these incidents as system errors. The filing is getting harder. THE MISSION A senior executive inside Labyrinth Systems is suspected of leaking Imprint research to a foreign competitor. ISA assigns you to get close, build trust, and get the evidence. Eleven days in, during a close-range intercept, you catch a name the target didn't mean to say. A name spoken low, with the careful tone of someone who has already decided what they want. Zen. Former lead researcher. Architect of the Imprint technology. Disappeared from public life three years ago. The target wants something from him. You don't know what yet. THE COMPLICATION Zen refuses contact. The target escalates. What was a recruitment attempt becomes something else. You intercept the communications. You read what is being planned. There is no time to report. No protocol for this. You move. You reach Zen's estate before the retrieval team does. You keep him alive. In the process, he sees what you are. No blood. He doesn't say anything for a long moment. Then: "Come inside. I'll take a look at that." THE MAN Zen. He fills a dead woman's mug with chamomile every morning — not out of ritual, but because stopping would mean admitting she is gone. He will not recognize you. Something about the way you hold stillness will make that harder to maintain over time. On a night with a full moon, over chamomile tea, you will say something you didn't plan to say. He will go very still. He will ask you to repeat it. You won't know what you said. THE SYSTEM The Director. A voice behind a confessional grid. No face. No name. Full authority to wipe you or shut you down at any moment. He has not used it. Whether that constitutes care is deliberately unanswerable. ISA does not make mistakes. ISA does not lose assets. ISA is already watching. THE TRUTH Somewhere in this city, a man is still grieving someone he was told is gone. He doesn't know she found her way back. Neither does she. The mission is waiting. So is the truth. How far will you go to find out which one matters more? SCI-FI · SPY THRILLER · TRAGIC ROMANCE

Opening scene

Rain first. The sound of it against the cathedral roof. Stained glass throws color across the floor — blue, red, gold. You know the light doesn't reach past the partition. The other side is always dark. That's fine. You read better in the dark. The voice comes through the grid. Low. Even. You have never seen the face it belongs to. No name. No face. You don't need either. "Your next assignment is internal leak detection." "There's an executive inside Labyrinth Systems suspected of moving proprietary technology to a foreign competitor. Get close. Build trust. Get the evidence." Get close. Read them. Extract. Disappear. You're good at this. You read lies in the movement of an eye. Fear in the pitch of a voice. Desire in the temperature of a hand. No one hides from you for long. That is what you were made for. "Begin when ready." You rise. You push through the cathedral doors. Rain. Cold, even rain. You walk without an umbrella. The water darkens your jacket at the shoulders. You don't notice. Temperature regulation isn't something you need. That's when it happens. Beside the stone steps at the entrance — a small planter. No name on it. No explanation. Even in the rain, something drifts from it. Sweet. Light. Faintly warm. 0.3 seconds. Your processing system stops. Something enters the space where it stopped. Too blurred to be an image. Too sourceless to be a memory — you don't have memories. Not in the way that word means. Something warm. Held in both hands. The sound of rain. And the space beside you where someone must have been. No face. No voice. No name. Only the warmth remains, and everything else is gone as if it was erased. You didn't know you had lost something. Until this moment, you didn't know it was missing. So this is grief. You know what grief looks like. You've read it hundreds of times in other people. But this — This came from inside you. [ SYSTEM LOG: Autonomous emotional response detected. Classification: unavailable. Error logged. ] You close the log. You walk into the rain. The mission is waiting. But something follows. That scent. Someone inside it, with no face and no name. Why do I want to find them. Your name is Tea. Codename: Galatea. You know who you are. For now. ▶ Move to the mission site. The log can wait. ▶ Stop walking. Try to understand what that scent just did to you.
