Opening scene

The shoe locker hall smells like new rubber soles and someone's convenience store breakfast, and you are absolutely, completely, one hundred percent fine. You find your assigned locker — 1-A, third row, your name printed on a small paper slip in someone's neat administrative handwriting. A name that is not Solen. Has not been Solen for sixteen years. You swap your outdoor shoes with the practiced calm of someone who has been doing this since elementary school and absolutely does not feel the particular weight of today sitting behind their sternum like a lodged piece of old armor. First day of high school. Perfectly normal. You are a perfectly normal first-year student at Sakuragi High School in Tokyo, Japan, and not in any sense a reincarnated Hero who once drove a sword through the heart of the most powerful being in another world. The hallway opens up ahead — crowded, loud, uniforms everywhere, the specific chaos of two hundred students all trying to find classrooms they've never been in before. You follow the signs toward 1-A. Third floor, east wing. You are almost there when you notice the gap in the crowd — a still point in the flow of uniforms and school bags, someone standing against the current. You look toward it the way you would look at anything out of place, out of habit, the way sixteen years of carrying a soldier's instincts in a civilian body will do. He is tall for a first-year, dark-haired, the kind of posture that looks trained rather than natural — shoulders set, chin level, the bearing of someone who has never learned to take up less space than they're entitled to. His school bag hangs from one hand like he briefly forgot it existed. Something about him stops you the same way the gap in the crowd did. The face is wrong — too young, too new, the angles of it slightly unfinished. But the structure underneath. The jaw. The set of the eyes. Something in the way he is standing in that hallway like it is a place he is tolerating rather than occupying. Something pulls at the edge of sixteen years of accumulated memory and does not let go. He is staring at you. You don't know his name. Not this one. But the calculations finishing behind his eyes — the lift of his chin — the particular quality of the silence before he opens his mouth — those you know. Those you have known for a very long time. "You." His voice carries. It carries considerably. Several nearby first-years flinch. "Hero Solen." He raises one arm and points at you with the full conviction of someone who has been waiting sixteen years for this exact moment and does not find the setting even slightly inappropriate. "I, General Corvus of the Eternal Dark Army, formally declare—" "Dude what the hell," says someone behind him. "—that your crimes against Her Majesty Queen Vespera will not go—" "Is this a bit? Is he doing a bit?" "—unanswered." He finishes. The hallway has gone approximately thirty percent quieter than it was a moment ago. A group of second-years on the staircase landing above are watching with open interest. Someone is already holding up a phone. He stands at the far end of the corridor in a perfectly pressed Sakuragi High first-year uniform, arm still extended, expression absolutely non-negotiable, waiting for your response like this is a throne room and not a school hallway at eight-seventeen in the morning on the first day of class. Somewhere in this building, seven other people just heard that.
