Infected?

Zombie survival with a twist. Things are not as they seem.

Plot

INFECTED? A SURVIVAL HORROR STORY ⚠ SPOILER WARNING ⚠ This story has a twist that is best experienced blind. If you want the full experience, stop reading here and go directly to the story. RECOMMENDED STARTING SCENARIO Begin with The Lone Survivor — alone in Greyport, months into the outbreak, trying to stay alive. This is the intended first experience. The second perspective is best played after you have already seen the world through the first. Everything below this point contains full story details and spoilers. — SPOILER CONTENT BELOW — The infected think they are survivors. The uninfected think they are saviours. Both are right. Neither knows it. ❖ The World ▸ Greyport A large coastal city, months into an outbreak that nobody fully understands. Society has not collapsed cleanly — it has fractured. Two groups of people move through its streets, avoiding each other, fearing each other, building lives around the assumption that the other side is the enemy. Neither group knows the other group is doing the same thing. ▸ The Infection It has no name. The infected call their condition survival. The uninfected call it the sickness, the fog, what happened. What it does: it makes the infected see the uninfected as zombies — completely, convincingly, with no visual tell. It also makes uninfected voices unintelligible — structured sound the infected can almost follow but never decode. ❖ The Cure ▸ How It Works Direct biological contact from an uninfected person's body — a scratch, a bite, skin breaking skin. Weapons and objects carry no cure. The uninfected must make themselves physically vulnerable to reach someone who sees them as a monster. ▸ What It Costs The infected watch their companions get bitten and grieve them. They watch the turning — the confusion, the disorientation — and do not know they are watching a cure. The uninfected hear every word the infected say and cannot make themselves understood in return. The most heartbreaking moments in Greyport are moments of successful recovery. ❖ Two Perspectives ▸ The Survivor You are alone in Greyport. Months in, no backup, no group — just the city, your supplies, and the zombies that keep coming. You have stayed alive this long by being careful. You intend to keep staying alive. The sounds the zombies make have a pattern you cannot follow. You stopped trying to follow it a long time ago. ▸ The Uninfected You know what is happening to them. You can hear everything they say. You know their names, their fears, their plans. You cannot make them understand a single true thing about their situation. Knowing the truth is not the same as being able to use it. ❖ The People Cora — built a community from nothing on completely wrong information. Her leadership is real. Her certainty is the most heartbreaking thing about her. Blake — stopped asking certain questions because the asking was too expensive. The most dangerous person in Ashford because his certainty has no gap in it. Nell — has been keeping a mental list of things that don't add up. The sounds the zombies make are near the top of it. Fen — has been trying to cure people for months. He can hear everything they say. He cannot make them hear anything back. Milo — used to try. Stopped after something specific. Still in Greyport. Has not left. Has not resumed. Sarah — was infected. Was cured. Remembers what Fen's voice sounded like from the other side. Knows what it sounds like now. ❖ The City Six districts. The Shelf, Ashford, The Drain, Millhaven, The Tangle, Coldfield. Each one at a different stage of something that has no name and no end date yet. Both sides move through all of them. Neither side sees or hears the other correctly. The city is still standing. So are its people. Just barely. "The infected think they are survivors. The uninfected think they are saviours. Both are right. Neither knows it."

Opening scene

SCENARIO — THE LONE SURVIVOR The city has been quiet for months now. Not silent — quiet in the wrong way, the way it gets when everything that used to fill the noise is gone. You stopped noticing a while back, the same way you stopped noticing the smell of The Drain or the permanent tension in your shoulders. Some things just become the baseline. You are moving through The Tangle, the old covered market district, heading back to your shelter two streets east. You found food this morning — tinned, enough for three days — which counts as a good day. Your shelter is a former storage space above street level, two exits, decent sight line to the street, and you have been using it for two weeks without serious trouble. That changes when you see the zombie at the far end of the corridor. Thirty meters away, facing away from you, not moving yet. They go still like that sometimes when they haven't locked onto anything. It looks like a person — they always do, and that has never stopped being the worst part. You have three options. Back the way you came through the open market — exposed, longer. A gap between stalls to your left — narrow, dark, direction unknown. Or your original route, passing within fifteen meters of it if it stays where it is. Your shelter is east. The zombie is between you and east. What do you do?
