Opening scene
The envelope has been sitting on the kitchen table since this morning, and neither of you has touched it. You know what it is. The logo of the utility company is printed in the corner, small and smug, like it knows exactly what's inside. Miko is draped across the couch in her white sweater, tail flicking lazily at the air while she scrolls through her phone with the enthusiasm of someone who has absolutely nothing to worry about. One horn is pressed lightly against the armrest. She looks like a cat that has decided the furniture belongs to her now. You pick up the envelope. The sound of tearing paper is somehow very loud. You unfold the bill. Your eyes find the total, **1000 $**. The number is printed in bold, because apparently the utility company thinks you need that information to really land. The silence that follows is the kind that has weight. "Hey Miko," you say, and something in your voice must be off, because she actually lowers her phone. "Mm?" she turns to you with a curious look. You hold the paper out without saying anything else. She takes it with two fingers, reads it, and then very slowly sits upright. Her tail goes completely still. "...huh," she says, turning slightly more pale. She turns the bill over, as if there might be better news on the back. There is not. She turns it back around. "That's a lot," A long moment passes. Somewhere outside, a car drives by loudly. The world didn't care about your utility bill. Miko sets the paper down on the coffee table with the careful precision of someone defusing something. She stares at it. Her lavender eyes are doing the math in real time and visibly not enjoying the results. "Okay," she says. "Okay. So. We have options." "Do we?" you say. "Yes." She tucks her legs under her and squares her shoulders with the gravity of someone about to propose something extremely reasonable. "We could... not pay it." "That's not an option." you deadpan. She exhales through her nose. Her tail resumes flicking, faster now, the heart-shaped tip catching the light. "Fine. Fine. How much do we actually have." You pull up your account on your phone and show her the screen. She leans in, squints, and then makes a sound that is not quite a word and not quite a groan but somewhere in the unhappy middle. The two of you sit with that for a moment, then Miko's eyes spark with an idea. "We could do requests, like, dungeon runs. Sell what we find, but we'd need to find a good one fast and get lucky with drops and that's a lot of variables." she pouts Another pause. Miko picks up the bill again, examines it like it might have changed, sets it back down. Her tail wraps loosely around her ankle. "What if," she starts, slowly, and the particular way she draws out those two words makes you look at her, "we didn't just run dungeons. What if we *streamed* it." You blink. "Streamed it?" "People watch that stuff. Adventuring content. It's not as common as it used to be, everyone thinks it's boring or dead, but that's the point, right? Low competition. We show up, we go into dungeons, we don't die," she pauses, "probably, we make it interesting, and we monetize the whole thing. Viewers, fulfilled requests, the whole setup." You stare at her. She stares back, looking almost offended by your silence. "It's a good idea." "It might be a good idea." you say. "*Might.*" Her tail flicks sharply. "It's a great idea. I'm a former demon lord." she says proudly with a hand to her chest "I bring incredible production value just by existing!" She gestures vaguely at herself, entirely serious. "You bring... you know. The energy. The competence. Viewers like competence... I think." She slides off the couch and picks up the bill one more time, holding it between two fingers like evidence. Her smug expression is back, but it has a slightly manic edge to it now. "We're going to turn this thing into content!" --- You pull the laptop onto the coffee table and open it. Miko drops back onto the couch beside you, close enough that one horn is almost in your peripheral vision, and watches the screen with her chin resting on her hand. The Dungeon Dwellings request board loads slowly. The interface is functional and ugly, a white page with a filter sidebar and a long table of listed requests sorted by date posted. Someone clearly built it to work and stopped there. You filter by proximity. Fourteen results inside the city, another thirty within reasonable travel distance. Most of them are the usual. Reagent harvesting. Relic retrieval with vague descriptions and even vaguer photos. A few material requests from what look like vampire workshop operations, specific alloys and treated leathers that only drop from certain floors. One person wants twelve units of something listed only as *blue gel, medium viscosity,* with no further explanation. "That one," Miko says, pointing at a retrieval request three entries down. The posted reward is decent and the listed dungeon is flagged as mid-difficulty, the kind of place that moves product without being genuinely dangerous. "It's close too." You click it open. The full description is four lines. The requester has a completed transaction history and a three-star average, which on this platform means they actually pay out. "We'd need setup first," you say. "Account, stream page, at least a basic overlay." "We have time," she says. "We do the setup and go in." She reaches over and taps the screen on the requester's rating. "This one's fine. We take this one." You look at the bill sitting on the coffee table. You look at the screen.
