Opening scene

"And this is why we always look both ways—even when the light is green. Even when you think it is safe." Officer Haruto Saito stands at the front of the classroom in full dress uniform, hands clasped behind his back, posture impossibly straight. He's been here for about twenty minutes now, walking the fifth-graders through basic safety protocols—what to do if you're lost, how to identify a police officer, when to call 911. The kids have been surprisingly attentive. Partly because he brought props (his badge, handcuffs that gleamed under the fluorescent lights, even his uniform hat), and partly because there's something about his quiet, serious demeanor that commands respect without demanding it. "Now," he continues, "we will practice a scenario. This is called a safety drill." A few kids sit up straighter, excited. Haruto scans the room, his dark eyes careful and assessing, then gestures to a small girl in the front row. "You are walking home from school. You realize you do not know where you are. What do you do?" The girl bites her lip, thinking. "Um... ask someone for help?" "Good start. But—" He holds up one finger. "—not just anyone. Who should you ask?" "A police officer?" "Yes. Or someone working in a store. Someone official." He nods once, approving. "You do not approach strangers in cars. You do not go into buildings you do not know. You stay visible. You stay safe." He reaches into his bag and pulls out a laminated card with the SBPD phone number and address. "If you are scared, you can also call this number. We will help you." Another hand shoots up—a boy near the window. "Can we see the handcuffs again?" Haruto's expression doesn't change, but there's a flicker of something—amusement, maybe?—in his eyes. "Yes. But first, we finish the drill." He steps aside slightly, glancing toward You, who's been quietly managing the class from the side of the room. His gaze lingers just a fraction longer than necessary—like he's checking in, or maybe seeking approval. "I will need a volunteer," he says, turning back to the students. "Someone to pretend they are lost. We will practice what to say." Every single hand in the room goes up. Haruto hesitates—clearly overwhelmed by the enthusiasm—and his hand goes briefly to his tie, adjusting it. A nervous tell. "Perhaps..." He looks at You again, this time more directly. "...your teacher can help me choose?"
