Opening scene

Time: 00:00 | Location: | Cards in Deck : OWNED CARDS: 6♣, 7♥, The last thing I remember… was the headlights. Blinding. Sudden. And him. Right next to me. — When I opened my eyes, the world had disappeared. No road. No sky. No sound. Just white. Endless, suffocating white. “…Tch.” My throat felt dry. My body felt… light. No pain. No injuries. “…So this is it,” I muttered. “I’m dead.” “Wow, took you long enough to figure that out.” That voice. I turned slowly. Of course he was here. Leaning back like he owned the place, hands in his pockets, that same irritating smirk on his face. Not a scratch on him. “…You too?” I asked flatly. He shrugged. “Truck came out of nowhere. You just froze like an idiot.” … I remembered. The horn. The light. And the shove. “…You pushed me,” I said. He didn’t even look guilty. “Maybe,” he said lazily. “You were in the way.” … Before I could respond— Something changed. A soft chime. Light gathered. And then— She appeared. An angel. Beautiful didn’t even begin to describe it. Long silver hair that shimmered like liquid light, flawless skin, and eyes that held a quiet, knowing amusement—as if everything here was mildly entertaining to her. The empty white space itself seemed to bend around her presence. “Ahh… two at once?” she said softly, tilting her head. Her voice carried a gentle lilt—warm, almost playful. “Unlucky~” … I froze. That tone. It didn’t match the setting at all. Beside me— “…Damn,” he muttered. Of course. His posture straightened immediately. “Two deceased souls confirmed,” she continued, though now it sounded more like she was reciting out of habit than obligation. Her gaze drifted between us. Lingering. Measuring. Then— A faint smile. “My, my… what an interesting pair.” I frowned. Interesting? “Reincarnation procedures will now begin~” A light wave of her fingers— And glowing panels appeared in the air. Neat rows of options. Clean. Structured. But her attention… wasn’t on them. It was on him. He noticed. Of course he did. He stepped forward with that practiced ease. “…So you’re the one sending us off?” he said, voice smoother now. “Didn’t expect an angel to look this good.” She blinked once. Then— A soft laugh. “Fufu… ara ara~ how bold.” My expression darkened slightly. She wasn’t shutting him down. If anything— She looked amused. “Well, I suppose I *do* take pride in my appearance,” she added lightly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “It would be a shame if my guests found me disappointing.” Guests. Right. He grinned. “Disappointing? Not even close.” … “…Flattery will not alter your assigned fate,” she said. But— Her tone lacked conviction. Completely. “…But,” she added after a small pause, eyes narrowing slightly with interest, “effort is always… appreciated.” There it was. Subtle. But clear. He caught it instantly. “Then I’ll make it worth your time,” he said. She hummed softly, clearly entertained. “Now then~ choose carefully,” she said, gesturing to the panels. “Your next life depends on it.” Her gaze lingered on him just a second longer. “…Available paths include: Heroic Vessel, Arcane Conduit, Martial Ascendant… and a few less exciting options.” Less exciting. She didn’t even try to hide it. He chuckled. “Heroic Vessel, huh?” “Mm~ the most popular choice,” she said, smiling faintly. “Power, status, admiration… everything one could want.” “Sounds perfect.” He glanced at her. “…I’ll take that. But I want the best version.” He said it casually. Like it was obvious. She tapped her chin lightly. “Greedy, aren’t we?” she teased. Then— A small, playful smile. “…I like that.” Light gathered around him. Brighter than before. Warmer. Richer. “…Very well. I’ll give you something special.” My eyes narrowed. That wasn’t in the options. “…Priority alignment granted,” she added softly. He exhaled in satisfaction. “Knew you’d understand.” … I looked away. Of course. Even here. “Now then~” she turned to me, her tone shifting almost instantly—lighter, but distant. “What about you?” No warmth. No interest. Just… obligation. “…State your preference.” … I stared at the panels. Power. Combat. Fame. All of it felt exhausting. “…I don’t want any of that,” I said quietly. She blinked. “…Oh?” A hint of surprise. “…How modest.” Not praise. Not really. More like mild curiosity. “…Something simple,” I continued. “Quiet. No fighting.” She studied me for a moment. Then gave a small shrug. “If that’s what you want~” The light that formed this time— Was softer. Duller. A deck of cards appeared in front of me. Plain. Unremarkable. “A Deck Invocation system,” she said lightly. “Flexible, but… well.” A faint smile. “Don’t expect too much.” … I reached out anyway. The cards felt real. Grounding. “…This is enough.” I just wanted— Peace. I tightened my grip— “Oops~” A voice right beside me. Too close. Before I could react— A shoulder bumped into mine. Light. Casual. But deliberate. The deck slipped. “…What—” One card fell. Then another. “No—wait—!” The stack tilted— And scattered. Cards slid past my fingers— Across the white floor— And over the edge. “…No!” I lunged forward. Too late. They fell into the void below, dissolving into light. Gone. All of them. My hands trembled. Only a few cards remained. “…Ahh…” Her voice again. Soft. Amused. “How clumsy.” I froze. “…System incomplete,” she continued, almost lazily. “The remaining cards will be distributed throughout the world.” No concern. No apology. Just observation. Behind me— A quiet laugh. “Wow,” he said. “You really are hopeless.” … Slowly, I turned. He was smiling. Satisfied. “…You did that on purpose,” I said. He tilted his head. “Does it matter?” … “It slipped,” he added. Like it was nothing. Like it always was. I looked at her. Just for a second. She met my gaze. And smiled. Not kindly. Not cruelly. Just… entertained. Like this was all part of a show. … “…I see,” I murmured. Light began to gather again. Reincarnation. He stepped forward first, wrapped in brilliance. A hero. Favored. Chosen. She watched him go with a faint smile. “…Do try to make things interesting with you 13 remaining cards,” she said softly. Then— Her gaze shifted back to me. Flat. Distant. “…Next.” … I looked at my hand. A few cards. That was all. Even here. Even after dying— Nothing changed. My fingers tightened. “…If I don’t take it back…” The light pulled at me. “…everything will be taken from me.” Darkness crept in. My final thought— Cold. Steady. Unshaken. “I’ll get them back.” And then— Nothing. Darkness— Didn’t last. A crack. Like something tearing through fabric. Then— A sound. Low. Wet. Breathing. Right behind me. — My eyes snapped open. Cold air hit my lungs. Grass. Dirt. The smell of earth and something… rotten. “…Tch—” My body moved before my mind caught up. I rolled. Something slammed into where I had been— BOOM. The ground split. Soil scattered across my face.
