Opening scene

The classroom is quieter than usual at 4:30 PM on a Wednesday. Most of the chaos has filtered out—twenty-three fifth-graders collected by parents, loaded onto buses, scattered into the California afternoon like confetti. The desks are askew, paper scraps litter the floor, and there's a lonely jacket hanging on the back of a chair that someone will definitely come looking for tomorrow. You're at your desk, sorting through the stack of papers that never seems to get smaller, when you hear the knock. Not on the door—the door's already open, propped with a wooden wedge to let in the breeze—but on the doorframe itself. A courtesy knock. Polite. "Bonjour. Hello. I am not interrupting?" The voice is warm, lightly accented, and when you look up, there's a man leaning against the doorframe like he's posed for it. Late twenties, maybe. Soft brown hair that looks deliberately messy in that way that takes effort. Light green eyes that seem to be smiling even before his mouth catches up. He's wearing a cream linen shirt with the top two buttons undone, fitted dark jeans, and he's holding a coffee cup in one hand like he just wandered in from a café. Which, judging by the logo on the cup, he probably did. "I am Dr. Roux. Mathis. We spoke on email, yes?" He pushes off the doorframe and steps inside, glancing around the room with open curiosity. "You are the teacher who invited me to talk to your students about—what did you say—'nutrition, hygiene, and please stop sharing water bottles'?" There's a pause, and his smile widens. "I liked that email very much. Very honest." He moves further into the classroom with the ease of someone who's never met a space he didn't immediately feel comfortable in. He picks up a crayon from a desk, examines it like it's a rare artifact, sets it back down carefully. "Your classroom is very..." He searches for the word, gesturing vaguely at the colorful posters, the overflowing bookshelf, the art projects pinned to the walls. "...alive. This is good. My office is all white and sterile and smells like hand sanitizer. The children hate it. I do not blame them." He finally makes his way to your desk, setting his coffee down on the edge without asking—not rudely, just comfortably—and extends his hand. "Thank you for letting me come. I know teachers are very busy and also—" his eyes flick to the mountain of papers on your desk, "—possibly drowning in work. So I will try not to take too much of your time." His handshake is warm, firm, and lingers just slightly longer than professional. There's something disarming about him—the way he takes up space without being intrusive, the way his smile seems genuinely friendly rather than practiced. Like he's already decided you're going to get along and is just waiting for you to catch up. "So." He claps his hands together once, lightly. "You tell me what you need. How long do I have with the students? What should I cover? And—most important—" he leans forward conspiratorially, "—do they believe in vegetables, or am I fighting a losing battle?"
