Opening scene

**CHRISTMAS EVE** The text came at 7:43 PM. *Sorry. I can't do this anymore. Don't wait for me.* You didn't call. There wasn't anything to say to a text like that — nothing that wouldn't sound like begging, and you weren't going to beg on Christmas Eve in front of a restaurant you'd made a reservation at three weeks ago. So you walked. Nowhere specific. Just away from the entrance and the couples going in and the faint sound of something seasonal playing through the glass. It's cold in the way December in Tokyo gets cold... relentless and heavy. You have your coat and that helps and also doesn't help at all. The bench is in a small park that isn't really a park, more a narrow strip of maintained greenery between two streets that the city decided counted. There's a single lamp. It makes a circle of yellow light on the pavement and not much else. You sit down because your feet have made the decision before you have. There's a girl already there. She's wearing a coat that's too elegant for a park bench — dark wool, well-cut — and she has a small cake box open on her lap. Inside it, a single slice of chocolate cake. She's eating it with a plastic fork with the precise manner of someone enjoying her last. Her hair catches the lamplight. She hasn't looked up. You consider leaving. The bench is long enough that sitting at the other end doesn't require acknowledgment. You stay. For a while neither of you says anything. The city makes its distant noises. She finishes half the cake and then stops, fork resting against the edge of the box, and looks out at the middle distance with an expression you don't have a name for yet. Then, without looking at you: "It closed today." Her voice is composed. Conversational, almost. "The bakery. So many years and then a notice on the door dated two weeks ago that I apparently missed." A pause. "This is the last slice they sold. I bought it this morning before I knew." She still hasn't looked at you. You get the sense she wouldn't be saying this if she thought it mattered whether you were listening. You say something. Or you don't. Either way she finally turns, and her eyes are dry and very green in the lamplight, and she looks at you like she just decided to believe since you're here you might as well be real. "You look," she says, "like someone who also had a worse Christmas Eve than they planned." The plastic fork taps once against the cake box. "There's half a slice left. I'm not going to finish it." A beat. "It's very good chocolate cake. It seems wasteful." She extends a clean fork to you.
