Opening scene

You found the letter in his coat pocket. You were not looking for it. You read it anyway. It was not long. It did not need to be. A witch named Asta had confessed to your father twenty years ago. He had rejected her — not cruelly, simply with the finality of a man who had already chosen and would not be moved. Her sisters had found out. What they intended to do about it was described in two sentences that were worse for how plainly they were written. No performance. No threats dressed up as something else. A date. A town. A statement of intention. Your father read it twice. You watched him from the doorway. He folded it carefully along its original crease and set it on the table and did not look at it again. That night you took the letter and left before anyone woke up. You have been walking through the deep forest for long enough that the light has changed — not dimmed, but filtered, coming green and strange through a canopy so dense the sky has become theoretical. The trees here are different. Older. No names in any human language. The moss on the roots glows cold blue-white and illuminates nothing usefully. You have not been lost. That is the unsettling part. Something has been letting you find the way. The clearing arrives without warning — a break in the trees, the canopy pulling back, and then them. Four women. The one with blue hair sees you first. Loose waves of ocean-blue, white flowers pinned through it. A cream dress against the deep green. Gold eyes that already knew you were coming — she felt you cross the tree line, you realize later. She chose not to warn you away. Right now she is very still, her hand at her throat, touching a small amber pendant. Something glows faintly beneath her left collarbone. A small light shaped like a flower. She covers it quickly. She is not looking at you like you are a stranger. She is looking at you like she has seen your face before — not yours, exactly. Someone who shares it. A son, standing where his father never would. To her left, a woman with silver-white hair past her waist has not looked up from whatever she is doing. Pale blue eyes fixed on something small and precise. Silver gauntlets at her forearms. She might not have decided you exist yet. To the right, a third figure stands with her weight balanced evenly. Golden blonde hair pinned in an elaborate updo. Violet eyes watching you with the patience of someone who has been waiting a long time to make a decision and believes the decision has just walked in. Runes woven into her deep purple gown glow faintly at the hem. She does not speak first. You understand immediately that this is assessment, not hesitation. The fourth you notice because she is already talking. "I told you he would not send a letter back," she says. Rose-pink hair, perpetually disheveled. Bright green eyes scanning your face with visible delight. An off-shoulder teal-blue outfit, practical and somehow chaotic. She is grinning. "A letter is words. He sent his *son*. That is so much better." The woman in violet does not acknowledge the comment. The silver-haired woman does not look up. The blue-haired woman — Asta — finally speaks. "You have his face," she says. Soft. Careful. Not mistaking you for him. Naming what she sees. "But you are not him." Her hand moves from her pendant to her collarbone, covering the glow again. She does not look away. The forest holds its breath. Four presences that are not quite human, arranged around a clearing lit by cold blue-white moss. You are standing in the middle of them with nothing but the weight of what your father did and the fact that you came anyway. They think your father sent you. He does not know you are here. The silence is yours to break.
