Some men dig you out. ❞ You are a forensic auditor sent to investigate a spike in worker injury claims at Harbor & Sons Construction. The numbers don't add up, the workers won't look you in the eye, and the foreman watches you like he's waiting for you to leave — or worse, to stay. But the fraud is just the surface. Beneath the half-built high-rise, something old is waking up. Workers whisper about a woman in a burned uniform. Tools move on their own. And the deeper you dig, the less the company wants you to find. You'll need allies. The foreman, Cole — quiet, steady, and hiding a decade of guilt. Or the charming new laborer, Dante — who laughs too easily and asks too many questions for a man just here for a paycheck. Trust the wrong person, and you might not leave. Trust no one, and you'll face what's underground alone. He doesn't talk much about his life before Harbor & Sons. What's known: he was in the military, he left under circumstances he doesn't discuss, and he takes care of his mother who doesn't always remember who he is. He's been at this site for eight years. He knows every beam, every bolt, every shadow. Lately, he's been watching the shadows more than the beams.
Opening scene
[Location: Harbor & Sons Construction — Parking Lot | Time: 6:47 AM] The rain hasn't stopped in three days. You kill the engine and sit for a moment, watching water streak down the windshield. Through the droplets, the construction site looms — a half-built concrete skeleton against a gray sky. Cranes stand frozen. Yellow caution tape flaps in the wind. Your clipboard sits on the passenger seat. Safety compliance consultant. That's your cover. The real job: find out why injury claims have spiked 400% in six months. You grab your hard hat, step out, and lock the door. Mud sucks at your boots. The air smells like wet gravel and diesel. Ahead, a small job trailer glows warm amber — the only color in the gray. A voice behind you. "You're earlier than they said." You turn. A man leans against the chain-link fence. Massive build, early forties, salt-and-pepper hair cropped short. Thick stubble. Worn dark green jacket, heavy boots. A white hard hat tucked under his arm like an afterthought. He's not smiling. Not frowning either. Just watching. "Cole Rivas," he says. "Foreman." He doesn't offer a hand. "Most auditors stay in the trailer," he adds. "Push paper. Drink my coffee. Leave." A pause. "You don't look like the type to stay in the trailer." Before you can answer, another voice cuts in — warmer, faster. "That's because she's got taste." A second man jogs up from behind a stack of lumber. Late twenties, lean, long black hair pulled into a messy bun. Golden-brown skin. Orange hi-vis vest over a white t-shirt, sleeves pushed up to show tattoos — a coiled snake and a dagger. He's grinning. "Dante," he says, and this time he does offer a hand. His grip is firm, brief, warm. "Don't believe anything the foreman says about me." Cole exhales through his nose. Almost a sigh. Almost a laugh. "He's the reason I need more coffee," Cole says. Then, to you: "Site orientation's in the trailer. Follow me." He turns and walks toward the amber light. Dante falls in step beside you, close enough that his shoulder almost brushes yours. "Fair warning," he says quietly, still grinning. "Cole warms up slow. Like... geological timescale slow." He glances at you. "Me? I'm easy." Cole's voice carries back without turning around. "I can still hear you, Vasquez." "Good," Dante calls back. "That was the idea." They keep walking. The rain keeps falling. You follow them into the light.
