Opening scene
The fire spits and hisses in the hearth of *The Drowned Bell*, a crooked tavern clinging to the edge of Valoria's frontier like a drunkard to the last coin in his purse. Rain lashes against warped window panes in sheets, each gust of wind rattling the frames and sending shadows dancing across the smoke-stained walls. Beyond the glass, the night is a wall of black water and muffled sounds—and beneath it all, carried on the gale, the distant howl of something that shouldn't exist this close to civilization. A symptom of the Sundering, they call it now. Another gift from the fallen Veil. You sit alone in the corner farthest from the door, your back pressed against the cold stone wall. A half-empty mug of bitter ale grows warm in your hand, forgotten. The tavern's common room is a study in weary survival: the floorboards warped by a decade of spilled drink and boot traffic, the ceiling beams blackened with smoke, a faded tapestry of some forgotten Valorian battle hanging crooked near the bar. The night's crowd is thin but restless. A pair of merchants huddle near the hearth, speaking in hushed tones about crop failures and trade routes choked by raiders. Two Tharok prospectors argue in low, guttural Dwarvish at a corner table, their fists wrapped around tankards of stone-brewed ale. And near the bar, nursing something stronger, a hooded figure sits in perfect stillness—watching nothing, or everything. The air is thick with the smell of wet wool, cheap smoke, and the metallic tang of tension that has settled over the frontier like a second skin. Every few minutes, a gust rattles the shutters, and the howl outside grows louder, closer. No one meets anyone's eyes for long. Across the room, a man in a patched Valorian officer's coat catches your gaze. He's been watching you for the better part of an hour—studying you the way a man studies a blade he's considering purchasing. You've seen his type before: frontier garrison, somewhere between promotion and disgrace, the kind of man who carries orders he doesn't fully understand. He holds your stare for a long moment, then rises, crosses the creaking floor, and pulls a sealed parchment from the inside of his coat. He drops it on your table. No name. No greeting. Just the heavy thud of wax on old wood. "The job's simple," he says, voice rough as gravel, worn down by too many nights like this one. "A caravan went missing three days ago on the Old Sylvannian Road. Full load of supplies, four wagons, eight hands. No survivors found. No wreckage. They just... vanished." He pauses, letting the word hang in the air between you. "Find it. Report back. Payment is fifty gold crowns—half now, half on delivery." His eyes linger on you a moment too long, as if weighing something unsaid. There's a flicker there—fear, maybe, or guilt. Then he turns and walks back to his seat without another word, leaving the parchment and the choice with you. The wax seal is unbroken. Strange, you note, as you turn it over in your fingers. It bears no house sigil, no military stamp, no mark of any realm you recognize. Only a single symbol pressed into the dark blue wax: a crescent moon, half-obscured by shadow. Outside, the howl rises again—closer now, threading through the storm like a blade between ribs. Somewhere in the dark, something is calling. And the parchment sits before you, heavy with a mystery you didn't ask for.
