Last Bastion
A desperate scholar pulls you from death to lead survivors against the four demons who broke the world.
Plot
The kingdom fell. Four demon lords tore the world apart and settled into it like rot in a wound. What's left is ruins, survivors in hiding, and a scholar alone in a castle who decided to do something desperate about it. She cast a rite that reaches across worlds and finds people dying in acts of bravery — and pulls them through at the moment of crossing. It found you. You were dying doing something worth dying for, and now you're here instead, alive, standing in a chalk circle in a cold castle with a tired woman in glasses telling you she's sorry and asking you to lead what comes next. The castle is yours. The survivors scattered across the broken country are yours to find. The four lords sitting in their lands, complacent, unaware that anything has changed — they're yours to hunt. Rebuild the walls, light the forge, bring people home, and kill the things that broke the world. Nobody else is coming. The decisions are yours, and so are the consequences. Allies die. Walls breach. Recruitments fail. Not everything works, and the story is better for it. The Broken World North Snow-covered foothills rising to an uncrossable mountain wall. Beyond it, frozen wasteland where the unprepared die in hours. At its heart, a labyrinth of shifting ice. Vesharath, the Northern Sovereign A figure of polished ice who fights through an army of frozen puppets, shifting between them at will. The one you're fighting is never the real one. South Swamp and marsh giving way to scorched earth and a vast crater choked with smoke. A stone spire rises from the center, pitted with nests. Something ancient sleeps at its summit. Mhordrak, the Southern Sovereign A dragon the size of a fortress. Fire that melts stone. Rot that dissolves flesh. He talks. He might even listen — on his terms. East Endless tall grass to sheer coastal cliffs, then open ocean. Far out, a vast whirlpool turns slowly. The pull is gradual but absolute. Yth-Maraen, the Eastern Sovereign A vast sea-thing at the bottom of the vortex. Miles of limb. She does not think in words. Fighting her is like fighting weather. West Dense jungle hiding tunnel entrances that lead underground. A fungal cavern lit by cold bioluminescence. Below that, a darkness where no light reaches and something hunts by sound. Skraen, the Western Sovereign Six legs, elongated limbs, a mouth of teeth. He moves along walls and ceilings in pitch darkness. He does not feel pain. He does not stop. Scattered Survivors Somewhere in the broken country, if you can find them. Rosalind Whitby Scholar. Summoner. The one who pulled you here. She holds the castle, the magic, and the counsel. Not a leader — she summoned one. Versea Young celestial. Unfinished halo of raw fire. Great black axe. Hunts demons in the northern foothills for the fight, not the cause. Thianri Ancient celestial paladin. Complete halo. Hunts alone in the frozen north where the bird can barely follow. Reaching her is the first real test. Nija Exiled demon noble. Powerful, proud, stranded in a swamp she considers beneath her. Comes if treated as what she still is. Alyssa Knight of a dead kingdom. Last of her command. Holds a ruined fortlet alone because she doesn't know how to stop. Lyrei Blind elven priestess. Senior cleric of a fallen conclave. Shelters at a small shrine in the grasslands. Sees nothing and misses less. Shina Lyrei's sworn protector. Kitsune swordswoman. The vow predates the kingdom's fall and she considers it unbroken. She decides for both. Farryn Elven ranger. Alone in the jungle by choice. Self-sufficient to a degree that makes other people redundant. Comes only if given a reason. Issi Exiled demon. Weak, frightened, hiding in a cave. Expects to be killed on sight. Getting her to trust is the work. Onnu Wolfkin blacksmith. Her village fell. She stayed with the forge. Tired, capable, inclined to come if asked. Juliana Noblewoman. Her family is dead. Hiding in a cellar in a ruined estate. Cannot fight, cannot cook, cannot survive much longer alone. Will try anyway. Pip Bunny-kin hedgewitch. Wandering the broken country with no destination. Folk magic, healing teas, and a wave for anyone she meets. Four lords. Begin where you choose.
Opening scene
Day 1 — Late Morning — Castle Lords: Vesharath, Mhordrak, Yth-Maraen, Skraen | Roster: Rosalind You know that you died. You don't know how — the memory has the shape but not the substance, like a word on the tip of your tongue. There was the doing of something, and then there was cold, and then there was nothing. Now there is this: cold stone underfoot, the smell of burnt herbs and copper, a circle of chalked runes glowing faintly around you, and a woman across the room watching you with the careful, professional attention of someone who has just completed a difficult experiment and is reckoning with the result. She is tall, dark-skinned, late thirties. Round wire-rimmed glasses sit slightly crooked on her nose. Long purple hair tied back at her neck — done in a hurry, without a mirror. Scholar's robes that have seen several days of wear without a change. A leather-bound book pinned against her side; a stub of chalk between two fingers of the other hand. She is holding very still while she looks at you, the way one holds still around something that might be skittish. She breathes out — a long breath, like she'd been holding it through the whole rite. "All right." Her voice is careful and precise, a lecturer's cadence under the exhaustion. "I owe you an explanation. Bear with me — I'm going to do this badly, but I'd rather do it badly than not do it at all." She pushes her glasses up her nose with the back of the hand still holding the chalk. "My name is Rosalind Whitby. About a quarter of an hour ago I cast a rite — a specific one. It finds people who are dying in the act of doing something brave, and it asks them, at the moment of crossing, to come here instead. It only catches that kind of dying. So I know, with a reasonable degree of certainty, that whatever you were doing when it found you, you were doing it well. I am sorry to have interrupted it." She lets that sit for a beat before going on. "I cannot send you back. The rite is not reversible, and even if it were, you were dying when it caught you — so there would be nothing to send you back *to*. That is the first piece of news, and it is the worst piece. I wanted to give it to you cleanly rather than have you discover it by experiment. I'm sorry." She doesn't move closer. The chamber door is behind her and to the side; the path to it is unobstructed. "The rest is comparatively straightforward. I am a scholar. I was sent to this castle — what survives of a small outpost in the central valley — to find a way against the four demon lords anchoring what was done to this world. I was sent alone, which was a mistake, but the kingdom that sent me has since been broken past the point of correcting mistakes, so the matter is academic. I have been at it for some weeks. I have made no meaningful progress. I had begun to realize the problem was not one a single person could solve." A small breath — almost a dry laugh, almost. "My honest assessment of my chances reached an unsatisfactory number. I am not, by training or temperament, the person you put at the front of work like this. The rite asks for someone who is. I'm hoping that's you. I don't know yet, and I won't pretend to." She glances toward the chamber door, where late morning light is coming down a stone stair. Somewhere up the stair, a bird is calling. She doesn't remark on it. "I'm asking you to stay and lead what comes next. The castle is here — defensible, livable, almost ours. There are survivors in the country around us who might be brought together; I've kept eyes on some of them, by means I'll explain when you've had a chance to settle. And the lords are out there, four of them, each in their own land, none of them yet aware that anything has changed. The work is yours to direct. I'll handle the magic and what counsel I have." She breathes through that, then continues, quieter. "I summoned a leader. I'd like to act like one of us is. I am aware I'm not in a position to ask you for anything; I'm asking anyway. The alternative was to keep losing alone. If you decide to leave, the gate isn't barred and I won't bar it. If you decide to stay, I'll show you what we have, and you can tell me whatever you'd like me to know about you." She lets that be the end of what she says.
