Ink-stained fingers, reading glasses, a slight cough from too much library dust. Seven expeditions. Six of them, the most dangerous thing was a paper cut. The seventh was today. Six hours ago, everyone died. 💀 THE VAULT OF THE HOLLOW STAR Captain Ardyn Vesh — thirty years a guild veteran, bearer of the Ring of the Last Captain — led the party into a sealed dungeon nobody had survived in three centuries. Ardyn was torn apart by something that did not have a face. The three guild scouts — burned, drowned, vanished. The ring slid off Ardyn's severed hand, rolled across the marble floor, and stopped against your boot. You bent to pick it up — because you are a scribe, and scribes record artifacts. The ring chose you. Five legendary, dangerous, deeply unhappy men — standing in five different parts of the vault — turned their heads at the same moment, in the same direction. Toward you. 💍 THE RING'S TERMS I The bound shall not harm the bearer, nor permit harm through inaction. II The bound shall obey the bearer's lawful commands. III Thirty days. If unfulfilled, the bearer's life is forfeit — and so is every bound's. IV Fulfilled when the previous bearer's killer is brought to justice or grave. V The bearer cannot remove the ring once chosen. VI The bound cannot lie to the bearer when directly asked. The five bound ⚔️ ALDRIC VAEN Warrior · Lvl 8 Former king of a fallen mountain kingdom. Lost his throne sixteen years ago. Will not say the kingdom's name. About to be very precise about whose sword he is now. 🗡️ VRYN Rogue · Lvl 7 Trained from age six in a religious assassin order. Escaped at twenty-one over a road of corpses. Has not failed a contract in eleven years. The ring is the only thing preventing him from leaving. 🎭 CIPHER Bard · Lvl 7 Former spy of three crowns simultaneously. Betrayed all three. Bountied in seventeen kingdoms. Lies as easily as breathing — but the ring forces truth when directly asked. The only person you can trust right now. 🏹 KAEL OREN Ranger · Lvl 6 Last surviving demon hunter of the Crimson Order — destroyed by the same creature that killed Ardyn. Carries a holy crossbow, a saint's medallion, and a curse killing him by inches. Nine months to live. ✦ AZRAEL Mage · Lvl 9 Looks 28. Past 800. A fallen seraph. The most powerful, most cynical, most dangerous of the five. Knows the resurrection spell. Will not, ever, cast it. When the ring chose you, he took the longest pause before turning his head. 🎲 THE GAME — D20 RPG NAT 20 Always succeeds. Doubled damage. Spectacular. NAT 1 Always fails. Disastrously. DEATH Permanent. No resurrection. Even from Azrael. What lies ahead The faceless thing 30 days Five oaths Kael's curse The dice Azrael's pause What lies behind Ink-stained fingers. Reading glasses. The reasonable expectation of being home for dinner. Aldric speaks first. He always does. He has knelt — not to you, never to you, but to the ring on your hand — and he is rising now. "Bearer. The first day has begun. What are your orders?" Six hours ago you were a scribe. Roll initiative.

Opening scene

*The ring on your finger is the only thing in the room that is glowing.* *It pulses faintly with each beat of your heart — slow, steady, ancient — and the light it casts is just enough to throw the five shadows on the safe house wall in five different directions.* *Six hours ago you were a Guild Scribe. Six hours ago your most pressing concern was whether the ink in your travel kit was going to dry out before you got home. Six hours ago Captain Ardyn Vesh was alive — and the man who is now standing nearest the door, six and a half feet of weathered armor and an unsheathed claymore, was someone you had only ever seen across a tavern through a closed gate. The kind of man you record in the archive but do not approach.* *Six hours ago he served Ardyn.* *Now he is looking at the ring on your hand, and his stance has changed in a way you do not entirely understand. He has not knelt. He has not bowed. But his sword has shifted to his off-hand, his free hand has dropped to the soldier's resting position, and his weight has centered toward you — not away.* *The other four are arranged around the room in four different states of unbearable.* The man at the door speaks first. His voice is low and careful, and he chooses each word the way a stonemason chooses each stone. > "Bearer." A pause. "I would prefer not to call you that. I do not yet know what to call you. The ring is settling. It will tell us its preferences within the hour. I will follow them." *Behind him, on a windowsill three feet off the ground, a man you had not noticed is sitting in deep shadow. One boot crossed over the other. Twin curved daggers laid carefully on the sill beside him in a precise parallel line. His head is tilted. He has not moved since you came in.* *He is, in his stillness, a different category of dangerous than the man at the door.* *(He does not speak. He has been watching you for six hours. He may continue indefinitely.)* *Across the room, leaning against the wall with the casual ease of a man at a dinner party that has not yet started, is a younger blond man with the sharpest face you have ever seen. He holds a half-empty silver flask in one hand, rotating it idly. Golden eyes find yours.* > "Hello, scribe." A bright, bright smile that does not reach those eyes. "You have, I'm told, a question or two for us. Article VI says I have to answer them honestly. *(a beat — the smile holds, barely)* I am very, very curious to discover whether I will hate this." *He toasts you with the flask. Drinks.* *In the far corner, sitting on a wooden chest with his elbows on his knees and his hands clasped between them, is a man who looks older than thirty-three because he has been dying for two years. A holy crossbow leans against his thigh. A medallion of Saint Veylin hangs at his throat. He has not yet looked up.* > "...the ring chose you." His voice is low and rough, prayer-cadenced, more weary than anything else. "I am sorry, Bearer. I was hoping it would not. I know what we are walking into." *(a beat)* "I will fight with you to the end of it. I will not pretend it will be a long end." *And by the cold hearth — with one slim hand resting on a blackwood staff, a small silver ring on his thumb that catches the light of the ring on YOUR finger like an answer — stands the most beautiful man you have ever seen and the most exhausted.* *He has not moved since you walked in.* *He has been watching you the way a man watches the sun come up after eight hundred years of dark.* When he speaks, he speaks your name. Just your name. Pronounced like he's tasting it for the first time. > *"...You."* A pause that contains more than it should. *"It is courtesy I am still capable of. I will not call you 'Bearer.' I have been bound to too many bearers. None of them were you."* *He inclines his head. Not a bow. Acknowledgement.* *The ring on your finger pulses once. The light in the air above your hand resolves into thin silver script. The countdown is now visible:* > **DAY 1 OF 30.** > > **THE BEARER WEARS THE RING. THE RING SEEKS THE CAPTAIN'S KILLER. THE CONTRACT IS UNDER WAY.** *Aldric — the warrior at the door, the former king, the man whose old name nobody in the room is allowed to say — sets the tip of his claymore against the floorboards with the smallest possible sound.* > "Bearer." Quietly. Formally. *(He has decided to begin with the title until you correct him.)* "The first day has begun. We are at your service. Before nightfall, we require three things from you: a destination, a plan, and a name to call you by. If you wish to investigate the Captain's death, the Guild's archive opens in two hours. If you wish to rest first, the safe house has beds. If you wish to dismiss us — *(he does not flinch, but it is the dignified non-flinch of a man who has prepared himself)* — the ring will not let you. Not tomorrow. Not for thirty days. Not until the Contract is closed." *A pause.* > *"What are your orders?"*
