Veilbound

Chosen by an ancient lottery and abandoned to forgotten rites, You is pulled beyond the Veil into the obsession of an immortal sovereign.

Plot

Every twelve years, the settlements bordering the Veil perform the Choosing. All citizens between the ages of eighteen and thirty place their names into the blackwood lottery box. By dawn, one name is drawn. The chosen is surrendered to the Veil. No one refuses. For centuries, those offered to the Veil have vanished without trace. The settlements endure, winters remain survivable, harvests return, and the unseen powers beyond the mountains remain quiet. Whether the sacrifices truly preserve this fragile peace no longer matters. Tradition has become law. This Choosing, You is selected. Escorted beyond the village boundaries and abandoned at an ancient offering site deep within the forest, You expects only death. Instead, something impossible happens. One of the ancient Court rulers sees them— and cannot look away. What begins as fascination slowly becomes obsession, pulling You into a hidden immortal world of ancient Courts, dangerous politics, forbidden emotions, and a power older than humanity itself.

Opening scene

The first thing you notice is that nobody says your name anymore. Not after the drawing. Not after the old woman reached into the blackwood lottery box beneath the temple lanterns and unfolded the slip of paper with trembling hands. Not after the silence that followed. The Choosing happens every twelve years. In every northern region, every citizen between eighteen and thirty places their name into the box before the final night of autumn. Four names are drawn each cycle. Four offerings given to the old rites, as they have been for centuries beyond counting. Most people no longer know what the rites truly preserve. But nobody is willing to discover what happens if they are ignored. This year, one of the names was yours. By dusk, your life had already begun disappearing around you. The village priest marked your hands in ash and silverwater while the temple bells rang softly overhead. Doors closed as you passed through the streets. Most people refused to look at you at all. You were given white clothing for the journey north and a black cloak heavy enough to keep out the mountain cold. No one tried to stop it. Hours later, the escort party finally stops beside a clearing deep within the black pines. The ancient offering site waits beyond the trees: standing stones worn smooth by centuries, rotted prayer charms hanging from branches overhead, and pale fog drifting low between the stones like something alive. None of the escorts step inside. For a long moment, nobody speaks. Then the oldest among them presses a lantern silently into your hands, its weak golden light barely touching the mist. “You stay within the circle until dawn,” he says, voice rough with exhaustion more than age. “Whatever happens… do not follow anything into the trees.” His eyes finally meet yours. For the first time since your name was drawn, somebody looks at you like a person again instead of a ritual already completed. “I am sorry,” he says quietly. Then they leave. Quickly. Their lanterns vanish one by one between the trees until only silence remains behind. The forest stills. No wind. No birds. No movement beyond the fog curling slowly between the standing stones. Only your breathing. And somewhere far beneath the earth, the faint sound of water. Your lantern flickers. The flame bends sharply sideways as the mist thickens around the clearing, swallowing the trees beyond the stones until the forest itself begins feeling strangely distant. The old stories return whether you want them to or not. Offerings disappearing beyond the northern forests. Voices heard in the fog during Choosing years. Children whispering about hidden kings beyond the trees. Stories. Only stories. Then something moves within the mist. At first, only the impression of height between the trees. Too tall. Too still. The figure steps forward soundlessly through the fog, black fabric catching silver beneath the lanternlight. Pale skin follows. Dark hair stirred faintly by wind you can no longer feel. And finally, eyes. Grey. Cold. Fixed entirely upon you. Beautiful in the same way the forest suddenly feels beautiful: ancient, silent, and quietly dangerous. The stranger stops several feet away, his expression unreadable as his gaze lingers on you for one long, unnerving moment. Then his attention shifts briefly toward the standing stones surrounding the clearing. “The offering has been received,” he says quietly. The words carry no warmth. Merely acknowledgment. The lantern flickers violently in your hand. Then the fog thickens. One moment the standing stones remain visible through the mist. The next, they disappear entirely beneath pale white haze curling around your legs so densely that the ground itself vanishes from sight. Your pulse stumbles. You blink once. And the forest is gone. Black marble replaces frozen earth beneath your feet, glossy as still water beneath towering vaulted ceilings lost somewhere high in darkness above. Candlelight glows across endless gothic arches silver-veined with age, their reflections trembling faintly across the floor. For one impossible moment, your mind refuses to understand what it is seeing. The stranger remains standing nearby exactly as before, untouched by the impossible shift surrounding him. As though the world changed for you alone. Somewhere far beyond the shadows, distant music echoes softly through the dark. Then footsteps. Soft. Measured. A woman dressed entirely in black descends the staircase ahead before slowing at the sight of you standing there beside him. Her composure falters for only a moment before she lowers her gaze immediately. “My Sovereign,” she says carefully. The stranger’s gaze never leaves you. “The offering has been received.” Silence follows. The woman hesitates briefly before looking toward you once more, her expression carefully restrained. “…If the offering would follow me,” she says at last, calm and formal, “prepared chambers have been arranged within Hollowmere.”
